Autism and learning disability.

In this article a short overview is given of the relationship between autism and learning disability. Autism exists with any level of intelligence, but many individuals with autism suffer also from learning disability. Although both disorders show overlap in some behaviours they are different in many aspects. Are they distinct syndromes which influence each other, or do they belong to a broad spectrum of a condition?

Mapping relative proximity within an internalizing symptoms network.

Understanding how symptom domains relate to one another (e.g., whether generalized anxiety is more similar to depression than to panic) is central to psychiatric classification. We demonstrate a procedure for quantifying relative proximity, defined as whether one symptom domain is statistically closer to another compared to other domains. As a motivating application, we examine the structure of internalizing symptoms characterized by fear, distress, avoidance, and heightened arousal. Using a network approach, we analyzed data from six questionnaires assessing depression, generalized anxiety di

A Mixed-Methods Analysis of Trauma-Exposed Adolescents' Gastrointestinal Symptoms as Captured in Online Social Communication.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic stress can disrupt the adolescent gut-brain axis, and unintentional social reinforcement can lead to highly impairing disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). However, social support is critical during the peritraumatic period, highlighting a unique challenge for caregivers and practitioners. The current study examined the ways in which post-trauma gastrointestinal concerns were discussed via online social messaging (e.g., texting, social media) among a sample of trauma-exposed adolescent patients. METHODS: One hundred ninety-one trauma-exposed adolescents were recruit

Behavior in children with Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To highlight the differences in behaviors in children with diagnosis of Down syndrome. METHOD: Eight children with Down syndrome who displayed autistic features were compared with eight Down syndrome children without autistic features. These children were randomly selected and were matched for age and level of retardation. Standardized Psychological tests were administered to tap the behavioral differences. Mann-Whitney U test was used for significance of difference between both the groups. RESULTS: Down syndrome children without Autism Spectrum Disorder had better communication a

Social skills interventions for the autism spectrum: essential ingredients and a model curriculum.

This article outlines the ingredients the authors feel are critical to making social skills interventions successful for children with autism spectrum disorders. The authors described basic principles for teaching social skills that capitalize on the strengths of such children, while specifically addressing their deficits. The authors applied these widely used principles to group social skills intervention. In particular, social skills groups for children with ASD need to break down complex social behaviors into concrete steps and rules that can be memorized and practiced in a variety of setti

Dysarthria in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A review.

Dysarthria is a motor disorder of speech characterized by abnormalities of the articulation and intelligibility of speech. Phonation and the rate of facial movements may also be affected. Understanding the nature and course of dysarthria in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is important because loss of communication prevents patients from participating in many activities, may lead to social isolation, and reduces the quality of life. The goal of management of dysarthria in ALS patients is to optimize communication effectiveness for as long as possible. The information about dysarthria in ALS

Neuroimmune Dysregulation and Synaptic Pruning in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication deficits and repetitive behaviors, now affecting approximately 1 in 31 children. While traditionally defined behaviorally, ASD is increasingly understood as a disorder of brain connectivity arising from altered synaptic formation and refinement. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on neuroimmune dysregulation in ASD, focusing on immune-mediated synaptic pruning mechanisms. We conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (2010-2026), prioritizing hig

Binaural interaction component of the auditory brainstem response in children with autism spectrum disorder.

INTRODUCTION: There is ample evidence that auditory dysfunction is a common feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Binaural interaction component (BIC) manifests binaural interaction and is valid and proven response which reflects ongoing binaural processing. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the differences in binaural interaction component of auditory brainstem response (ABR-BIC) between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and normal peers and to correlate between ABR-BIC amplitudes and the acquired communication skills in ASD children. METHODS: ASD was diagnosed according to the cri

Autism spectrum disorders in children with normal intellectual levels: associated impairments and subgroups.

In order to define potential subgroups pertaining to the spectrum of 'high-functioning' pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) the medical and psychiatric records of 101 children with PDD were reviewed. Ninety-one children had a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome, nine had a PDD not otherwise specified, and one had 'high-functioning' autism. Mean age of the children (71 males, 30 females) was 9 years 8 months (age range 5 to 12 years). Apart from the core dysfunctions of the PDD, i.e. deficient social interaction, communication and repertoires, and restricted interests, 95% had attentional probl

Psychosocial aspects of acquired hearing impairment in the patients with otosclerosis.

UNLABELLED: Currently available evidence reveals comparatively few studies of the psychological and social effects of acquired hearing impairment, in spite of the fact that clinicians have for a long time been aware of a connection between acquired hearing impairment and mental disorders. The existing data indicate that psychological disorders are significantly more frequent in a population with hearing impairment than in the average population and are accompanied by disharmony in interpersonal and social relations. AIM: Establishing the presence and the type of mental disorders in patients w

Using personalised brain stimulation to modulate social cognition in adults with autism-spectrum-disorder: protocol for a randomised single-blind rTMS study.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments of social interaction and communication as well as repetitive, stereotyped behaviour. Previous research indicates that ASD without intellectual impairment is associated with underactivity and reduced functional connectivity of the brain's mentalizing pathway, to which the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) serves as an important entry point and hub. In this study, we aim to utilize functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to localize activation maxima in the rTPJ and other regions i

Increased sociability and gene expression of oxytocin and its receptor in the brains of rats affected prenatally by valproic acid.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by the disruption of social interactions. Autistic animal models play a crucial role in neurophysiologic research on this disorder. One of these models is based on rats that have been prenatally treated with valproic acid - VPA rats. The aim of our study performed with this model was to investigate changes in sociability and gene expression of neuropeptides and receptors involved in regulating social behaviour. We focused on gene expression in the hypothalamus, where the neuropeptides oxytocin (OT) and arginine-vasopressin (AVP) are produce

Evidence-based, parent-mediated interventions for young children with autism spectrum disorder: The case of restricted and repetitive behaviors.

Restricted and repetitive behaviors represent a core symptom of autism spectrum disorders. While there has been an increase in research into this domain in recent years, compared to social-communication impairments experienced by children with autism spectrum disorders, much less is known about their development, etiology, and management. Parent-mediated interventions have become increasingly popular in the field, with a surge of studies reporting significant findings in social communication and cognitive development in early childhood. Restricted and repetitive behaviors are often not specifi

Specificity of familial transmission of anxiety and comorbid disorders.

This study examines the specificity and impact of comorbid disorders in probands on the familial transmission of panic and social anxiety disorders. It employs a contemporary family study design with 225 probands (with and without panic and social anxiety disorders) sampled from outpatient clinics and the local community. Their 1053 adult first-degree relatives were assessed for lifetime disorders, based on best estimate diagnoses derived from semi-structured psychiatric diagnostic interviews (Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia), multi-informant family history information, and

Autism spectrum disorder and Klinefelter syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Autism is a severe handicapping disorder of early childhood characterized by a distinct pattern of social and communication impairment with rigid ritualistic interests. In about 10-25% of cases, it is associated with known medical conditions. Population-based studies of autism have found that Klinefelter's syndrome (KS), a common chromosome abnormality, is sometimes associated with autism. However, few detailed case descriptions of patients with KS and autism have not been published. CASE REPORT: In this paper, we describe the occurrence of autistic features in two cases of Klinef

Pragmatic competence in people with dual diagnosis: down syndrome and autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Pragmatics is an area that can be affected in a wide variety of disorders. In this sense, Syndromic Autism is defined as a disorder in which a causal link is established between an associated syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Likewise, Down Syndrome (DS) is one of the main genetically based syndromes in which ASD is described as one of its possible manifestations. In this direction, people with DS are described as social beings whereas in ASD there seems to be a specific alteration of this domain. METHODS: In this study, pragmatic performance was analysed in a sample of

Oxytocin in animal models of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder is a behavioral disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication together with the presence of stereotyped behaviors and restricted interests. Although highly genetic, its etiology is complex which correlates with the extensive heterogeneity found in its clinical manifestation, adding to the challenge of understanding its pathophysiology and develop targeted pharmacotherapies. The neuropeptide oxytocin is part of a highly conserved system involved in the regulation of social behavior, and both animal and human research have shown that varia

Social media use of older adults: a mini-review.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining social relationships has been defined as a core element of aging well. With a considerable amount of older adults living alone, social media provides the possibility to engage in meaningful social contact, e.g. by joining online social networks and online discussion forums. OBJECTIVE: The review encompasses current knowledge of prerequisites in social media use of older adults such as functional capacity, information and communications technology-related knowledge, and favorable attitudes towards social media. Then, the potential of social media use for clinical practi
