Surgical treatment of arthritis in the elderly.

Arthritis in the elderly can be very effectively treated by a combination of careful orthopaedic and rheumatological assessment. The overall functional assessment, and definition of the aims and likely results of surgical treatment by the team approach, involving occupational therapists, physiotherapists and social workers, are important for success. There are many worthwhile surgical procedures available to relieve pain, and restore mobility and independence to those affected by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Linking Mastery Across the Life Course to Mobility Device Use in Later Life.

OBJECTIVES: Mastery in older ages is shaped by earlier-life experiences. Prior research has demonstrated that mastery is associated with health-promoting behaviors; however, little research has examined whether mastery histories influence health behaviors such as mobility device use in later life. METHOD: Using 25 years of data from the Americans' Changing Lives Survey (N = 1,427), this research explores whether different trajectories of life course mastery influence the odds that an older adult will use a mobility device when experiencing functional impairment. We used growth mixture models

The challenge of safe driving among elderly drivers.

The challenge of ageing has two key aspects with regard to driving: mobility and safety. It is necessary for elderly adults to preserve independent mobility and activity; however, physical frailty and cognitive limitations have negative effects on their safety. Therefore, the issue of driving, and more specifically, the fostering of safe driving of old people, is crucial, especially due the increasing number of elderly people holding a driving license. The purpose of this Letter is to point out the complexity of elderly driving and to suggest countermeasures by acknowledging that obtaining the

A study of transgender adults and their non-transgender siblings on demographic characteristics, social support, and experiences of violence.

A national sample of 295 transgender adults and their nontransgender siblings were surveyed about demographics, perceptions of social support, and violence, harassment, and discrimination. Transwomen were older than the other 4 groups. Transwomen, transmen, and genderqueers were more highly educated than nontransgender sisters and nontransgender brothers, but did not have a corresponding higher income. Other demographic differences between groups were found in religion, geographic mobility, relationship status, and sexual orientation. Transgender people were more likely to experience harassmen

Using mobile eye-tracking to evaluate gaze behavior during a speech in pediatric anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Altered gaze in social settings is a hallmark of social anxiety; however, little research directly examines gaze in anxiety-provoking contexts among youth with anxiety disorders, limiting mechanistic insight into pediatric anxiety. The present study leveraged mobile eye-tracking technology to examine gaze behavior during a naturalistic stressor in a clinical developmental sample. METHODS: Sixty-one youth (ages 8-17 years; 28 with anxiety disorders, 33 non-anxious controls) completed a naturalistic social stress task (public speaking in front of a videotaped classroom audience) whi

Promoting Exercise as a Therapeutic Intervention in Multiple Sclerosis: Barriers, Efficacy, and Social Prescribing Strategies.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurologic disease associated with significant physical, cognitive and social burden. Substantial evidence supports the safety and benefits of aerobic exercise for people with MS (pwMS), including improvements in fatigue, mobility, cognition, mood and quality of life. While exercise is recommended across all disability levels in clinical guidelines, real-world adherence remains low. This narrative review summarizes the benefits of aerobic exercise in MS and examines the symptom-related, psychosocial, socioeconomic, and healthcare system barriers that limits

Decline in older adults' daily mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic: the role of individual and built environment factors.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research has shown that the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically impacted the daily mobility of older adults. However, very little attention has been paid to the role of individual and built environmental factors in decline in older adults' daily mobility during the pandemic. METHODS: Based on a cohort survey of 741 older adults in Hong Kong, we conducted a one-way ANOVA to explore the differences in determinants (individual or environmental factors) of older adults' daily mobility between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, multilevel linear regression was perfo

Combined effect of self-perceived voice disorders and hearing loss on social acts in older adults: a 1-year longitudinal study.

[Purpose] Self-perceived voice disorders (VD) and hearing loss (HL) are common communication barriers in older adults, yet their combined impact on social participation remains underexplored. This study examined the additive effects of self-perceived VD and HL on frequency of going out (FGO) and social interactions in community-dwelling older Japanese adults. [Participants and Methods] In this longitudinal study, 134 adults aged ≥65 years were surveyed at baseline and one year later. Self-perceived VD and HL were assessed using Voice Handicap Index-10 (cutoff ≥5) and Hearing Handicap Inventory

The End of the Partnership With a Guide Dog: Emotional Responses, Effects on Quality of Life and Relationships With Subsequent Dogs.

Guide dogs are mobility aids that facilitate independent travel of people who are blind or visually impaired. Additional benefits imparted to the guide dog handler include companionship, and increased: social-function, self-esteem and confidence. Some evidence shows that the end of the guide dog partnership can result in reduced mobility, and may have profound psychosocial effects on the handler due to feelings of bereavement and loss of self-esteem. However, this evidence is limited. This study examined the experiences and feelings of 36 people across New Zealand, who experienced the ending o

The effects of sitting Tai Chi on physical and psychosocial health outcomes among individuals with impaired physical mobility: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Impaired physical mobility refers to a limitation in independent and purposeful physical movement of the body or one or more extremities. Physical restrictions result in negative consequences on an individual's physical and psychosocial functions. Sitting Tai Chi, a derivative form of traditional Tai Chi, has been found to increase the flexibility of all joints involved and enhance the ability to perform physical activity. However, the evidence of sitting Tai Chi on physical and psychosocial health outcomes on individuals with impaired physical mobility is limited. OBJECTIVES: To

Community mobility among older adults with reduced kidney function: a study of life-space.

BACKGROUND: Life-Space Assessment captures community mobility and social participation and quantifies the distance, frequency, and independence obtained as an older adult moves through his or her environment. Reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is associated with decline in activities of daily living among older adults, but less is known about the association of eGFR with restrictions in mobility. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Study of Aging w

Modal Shift from Cars and Promotion of Walking by Providing Pedometers in Yokohama City, Japan.

Mobility management is a transportation policy aiming to change travel behavior from car use to sustainable transportation modes while increasing people's physical activity. Providing pedometers and visualizing step counts, popular interventions in public health practice, may constitute a mobility management program. However, the ease of modal shifts and changeability of walking habits differ across neighborhood environments. Using questionnaire data from 2023 middle-aged and older participants from Yokohama, Japan, in May 2017, this study examined (1) the relationship between the physical and

[The prevalence of falls and associated factors among the elderly according to ethnicity].

The historical and cultural characteristics reflect the Brazilian population. Elderly blacks are disadvantaged in socio-economic and demographic, clinical, functional and psychosocial aspects, reducing their social autonomy and functional independence. The decline in functional status due to variables associated with age and ethnicity can contribute to disabling events, such as falls. Socio-demographic, clinical and functional aspects related to falls were analyzed; Mobility, functional status and cognition were measured, with a statistical significance of pd"0.05. The sample of 196 elderly pe

Pre-Columbian Andean sickness ideology and the social experience of leishmaniasis: A contextualized analysis of bioarchaeological and paleopathological data from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.

Sociocultural concepts associated with sickness can profoundly influence social processes and individual experiences of disease. Here, we consider the role of sociocultural beliefs concerning sickness in the construction of individuals' social identities in the pre-Columbian Andes. Paleopathological analyses reveal evidence of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, a facially disfiguring infectious disease endemic to tropical lowland rainforests, in the skeletal remains of six females buried at Coyo Oriental and Tchecar Túmulo Sur, two Middle Horizon (AD 500-1000) cemeteries in the highland desert of Sa
