The aims of this article were to describe changes in social relations from ages 75 to 80, and analyze whether changes in social relations are influenced by functional ability at age 75. The study includes data from the NORA follow-up study of 75-80 year-old men and women in Jyväskylä (Finland), Göteborg (Sweden) and Glostrup (Denmark). The present analyses include the 743 persons who participated in both studies and who answered the questions about social relations. The structure of social relations was measured by: 1) frequency of contacts with children, grand/greatgrandchildren, relatives, c

Amid pervasive digital media and fierce employment competition, social media serves as a key source of job information and professional connections for college students. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and cognitive behavioral theory, this study constructs a latent variable structural model featuring dual parallel mediators (social capital, risk perception). Based on questionnaire data from 2,008 students recruited from multiple universities across different regions of China, this study combines confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), structural equation modeling (SEM), hierarchic

The amygdala is a core structure in the anterior medial temporal lobe, with an important role in several brain functions involving memory, emotion, perception, social cognition, and even awareness. As a key brain structure for saliency detection, it triggers and controls widespread modulatory signals onto multiple areas of the brain, with a great impact on numerous aspects of adaptive behavior. Here we discuss the neural mechanisms underlying these functions, as established by animal and human research, including insights provided in both healthy and pathological conditions.

The purpose of this study was to describe the factor structure of the Sleep-Wake Activity Inventory (SWAI) in a Mexican population. In a sample of 722 Mexican college students, we replicated five of the six factors originally described in the SWAI. Retained factors included: excessive daytime sleepiness (similarity coefficient of 0.735), psychic distress (0.609), social desirability (0.638), individual's ability to relax (0.864), and nocturnal sleep (0.660). These results confirm the factor structure and extend the possible utility of the SWAI in a siesta culture.

Social isolation and loneliness are increasingly recognized as key social determinants of mental health. This study aimed to investigate their roles in the onset and progression of depression and anxiety. In this cohort study, we included 445,678 participants free of depression or anxiety at baseline. Social isolation and loneliness were assessed using validated questionnaires, and mental health outcomes were ascertained through hospital records. Multistate Markov models estimated associations of social isolation and loneliness with transitions from baseline to incident depression or anxiety a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This paper consists of two studies that test for the presence and content of stereotypes of highly socially anxious individuals.
DESIGN: The current studies examined traits that comprise social anxiety stereotypes, and then tested whether undergraduate students held part of this stereotype via an implicit-association test (IAT).
METHODS: In Study 1, a sample of undergraduate students (n = 635) was asked to generate descriptors of people who are highly socially anxious. These descriptors were utilized to create the Social Anxiety Stereotype Measure (SASM) and the un

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the role of social factors, especially social support for sleep, among victims living at home around 1-2 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted between May and December 2012 (14-21 months after the disaster) in the Ishinomaki area, Japan. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine the association between social factors, including social support, and prolonged sleep difficulties (persisting over 1 month). Social support was divided into t

BACKGROUND: The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and Social Phobia Scale are companion measures for assessing symptoms of social anxiety and social phobia. The scales have good reliability and validity across several samples, however, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses have yielded solutions comprising substantially different item content and factor structures. These discrepancies are likely the result of analyzing items from each scale separately or simultaneously. The current investigation sets out to assess items from those scales, both simultaneously and separately, using explora

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are often undetected and untreated in adolescents. This study evaluates the relative efficacy of a school-based, cognitive-behavioral intervention compared to an educational-supportive treatment for adolescents with social anxiety disorder.
METHODS: Thirty-six students (30 females), ages 14 to 16, were randomized to a 12-week specific intervention, Skills for Social and Academic Success (SASS), or a credible attention control matched for structure and contact, conducted in school.
RESULTS: Independent evaluations and adolescent self-reports indicated significant

BACKGROUND: Most studies support the association between social capital and health. However, none of the studies to date has focused on persons with psychiatric disability, and these past studies have drawbacks in conceptual development and the use of operational variables of social capital.
AIMS: This study develops measures and examines patterns of social capital for persons with psychiatric disability.
METHODS: Subjects (n = 273) were selected from a long-term psychiatric institution in Taiwan, based on their level of functioning. The measures of social capital were designed at the indivi

The OECD's first Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) in 2019 assessed 10- and 15-year-olds across ten cities, employing a framework of 15 skills organized into five dimensions aligned with the Big Five personality traits. While this adult-derived model offers a parsimonious structure for measuring social-emotional skills, its applicability to children and early adolescents across diverse cultural contexts remains largely untested. This study examined the structural validity of the SSES framework employing exploratory graph analysis (EGA)-a network psychometrics technique using skill f

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) frequently co-occurs with anxiety and depression during adolescence. However, traditional latent variable models based on total scores often mask specific symptom-level interactions. This study utilized network analysis to elucidate the fine-grained associations between IA, anxiety, and depression symptoms among Chinese adolescents and to explore potential gender differences in these network structures.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 10,491 junior high school students (mean age = 13.88 years; 51.98% male) in Jingzhou City, China. Parti

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by altered development of the social brain with prominent atypical features in the fronto-temporo-parietal cortex and cerebellum. Early signs of ASD emerge between 6 and 12 months: reduced social communication, slightly less advanced motor development, and repetitive behaviour. The fronto-temporo-parietal cortex and cerebellum play a prominent role in the development of social communication, whereas fronto-parietal-cerebellar networks are involved in the planning of movements, that is, movement selection. Atypical sensory responsivity, a core fea

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety frequently co-occur and exhibit overlapping symptoms and shared psychosocial risk and protective factors. Relationship-specific social support and strain are known to confer protective and risk effects, respectively, yet their role in shaping the symptom-level structure of depression and anxiety remains insufficiently understood. This study employed a network analytic approach to examine the structure of depression-anxiety comorbidity and its associations with perceived stress and relationship-specific social support and strain. We also examined whether these

Although the cerebellum is primarily known for motor functions, its involvement in cognitive and emotional functions has become more evident in recent years. In particular, the cerebellar vermis has been implicated in social behavior. Here, we examined the effects of social defeat stress (SDS) during late adolescence on sociability, preference for social novelty, and the morphological characteristics of cerebellar Purkinje cells (PCs). Additionally, we investigated the impact of early handling, an early-life mild stress, and its interaction with subsequent SDS, on social behavior and the struc

BACKGROUND: The national and global strategy to combat HIV, often referred to as the "90-90-90," aims to diagnose 90% of people living with HIV, get 90% of those diagnosed onto antiretroviral treatment (ART), and achieve viral suppression in 90% of those on ART. The remaining 10-10-10 who will be undiagnosed, not on ART, or not virally suppressed, include vulnerable persons and populations most affected by social determinants of health. Given their foci on the social determinants of health at the individual, social, and structural levels, social scientists are in a prime position to help reach

This analysis is meant to elucidate the concept of structural violence and its implications for nursing science and practice. The concept of structural violence, also known as indirect violence, was first identified in the literature by peace researcher Johan Galtung. According to Galtung, structural violence broadly represents harm done to persons and groups through inequitable social, political, or economic structures. Such inequitable structures, such as systemic discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc. create conditions within society that directl

This study aimed to explore the age-specific characteristics and research trends of Behavioral Activation (BA) interventions through a Keyword Network Analysis (KNA). A comprehensive review of experimental studies applying BA was conducted, covering literature published between 2003 and 2023. Keywords were extracted by age group children and adolescents, adults, and older adults and analyzed using network metrics and cohesive structure evaluation. BA interventions were consistently associated with reductions in depression and anxiety symptoms and improvements in quality of life across all age

Obesity and diabetes pose a major threat to public health and brings huge economic and social burdens. Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) plays a crucial role in the occurrence of the metabolic disorder by sending key information to the brain through nervous system to control food intake. Understanding the underlying mechanisms on how the food structure mediates the brain-stomach neutrally regulating digestion process, especially gastric emptying, is thus paramount for precisely designing food structure and for effectively controlling appetite and reducing diet-related disease. This review discusses
