Cross-cultural validation of the BFOE model: Best practices and future directions for psychometric evaluation of the Fear of positive evaluation scale - Insights from a Dutch translation.

The Bivalent Fear of Evaluation (BFOE) model suggests that Social Anxiety Disorder is not only characterized by fear of negative evaluation (FNE), but also fear of positive evaluation (FPE). While FNE has been firmly established, research of the latter is accumulating. To evaluate the role of the BFOE Model, and particularly FPE, validated measures such as the Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale (FPES) are pivotal. Yet, validation of psychometric properties is often at stake or neglected when translating a scale to other languages. This hampers cross-cultural evaluation of questionnaires and rel

A systematic review to identify areas of enhancements of pandemic simulation models for operational use at provincial and local levels.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, computer simulation models have supported development of pandemic influenza preparedness policies. However, U.S. policymakers have raised several concerns about the practical use of these models. In this review paper, we examine the extent to which the current literature already addresses these concerns and identify means of enhancing the current models for higher operational use. METHODS: We surveyed PubMed and other sources for published research literature on simulation models for influenza pandemic preparedness. We identified 23 models published between 1990 a

Comparing the Burnout Assessment Tool and the Sydney Burnout Measure with one another and depression.

Burnout has conventionally been defined in terms of the Maslach Burnout Inventory's three-factor model comprising exhaustion, cynicism/depersonalisation and reduced efficacy. Recent research, however, has generated measures which examine a wider array of symptoms and which generate a total score to quantify overall burnout severity. In this study we compare two such instruments, the Burnout Assessment Tool and the Sydney Burnout Measure and examine their discriminant validity with depression as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. We recruited 903 self-diagnosed burnout sufferers an

When does socioeconomic status promote or inhibit donation behaviour? The joint influence of donation visibility and incentives.

What shapes the socioeconomic status-donation behaviour relationship? While research has identified donation visibility and incentives as important contextual factors, their joint effects remain relatively unclear. Across four studies, we examined how the combination of donation visibility (public versus private) and incentives (incentivized versus non-incentivized) influences the aforementioned relationship. We found that socioeconomic status negatively predicted donation behaviour in private non-incentivized and public incentivized contexts, but positively predicted donation behaviour in pri

Pre- and Postnatal Valproate Exposure Affects Brain Development.

This review investigates the teratogenic impact of valproic acid (VPA) on brain development, focusing on dose-dependent and timing-related behavioural and neurological outcomes in rats and mice, with an emphasis on using it as a model for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Single and multiple administration methods (e.g., oral gavage and intraperitoneal injections) across various rat and mouse strains consistently report behavioural alterations (i.e., altered social interaction and locomotor activity) and neuronal changes, particularly in the hippocampus and cerebellum. We underscore the importa

The Cultural Adaptation of a Transition Program for Latino Families of Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

During the transition to adulthood, effective and culturally relevant supports are critical for families of youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There is a dearth of documented program development and research on supports for Spanish-speaking Latino families during this life stage. The present work describes the cultural adaptation process of an evidence-based transition program for Latino families of youth with ASD. A model of the actions necessary to meaningfully conduct a cultural adaptation in this context is described. After implementing the culturally adapted program titled Juntos

How does sexual minority stigma "get under the skin"? A psychological mediation framework.

Sexual minorities are at increased risk for multiple mental health burdens compared with heterosexuals. The field has identified 2 distinct determinants of this risk, including group-specific minority stressors and general psychological processes that are common across sexual orientations. The goal of the present article is to develop a theoretical framework that integrates the important insights from these literatures. The framework postulates that (a) sexual minorities confront increased stress exposure resulting from stigma; (b) this stigma-related stress creates elevations in general emoti

Current trends in the assessment and somatic treatment of resistant/refractory major depression: an overview.

A significant proportion of depressed patients eventually present with treatment-resistant/refractory major depression (TRD), a debilitating condition that imposes significant health, social, and economic burdens. Recently, a growing level of consensus has been reached on the general meaning of TRD, according to which, depression is considered resistant when at least two trials with antidepressants from different pharmacologic classes (adequate in terms of dose, duration, outcome, and compliance) failed to achieve clinical remission. Regarding the management of TRD, a two-step approach is sugg

Computerized measurement of the content analysis of natural language for use in biomedical and neuropsychiatric research.

Over several decades, the senior author, with various colleagues, has developed an objective method of measuring the magnitude of commonly useful and pertinent neuropsychiatric and neuropsychological dimensions from the content and form analysis of verbal behavior and natural language. Extensive reliability and validation studies using this method have been published involving English, German, Spanish and many other languages, and which confirm that these Content Analysis Scales can be reliably scored cross-culturally and have construct validity. The validated measures include the Anxiety Scal

Validation of a novel systematic social observation for assessing the social and built environment in neighborhoods surrounding community-based substance use programs.

BACKGROUND: Systematic social observation (SSO) quantifies changes in the social and built environment and can be useful for evaluating the neighborhood effects of substance use programs. METHODS: We developed, implemented, and validated an SSO instrument in the Bronx, New York City, and Providence, Rhode Island. Research assistants assessed neighborhoods in the Bronx (4/19/2023-6/22/2023) and Providence (11/4/2024-12/20/2024) following a randomization schedule to minimize temporal biases. We used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Bayesian multi-level item response theory (IRT) models to

Relational Well-Being in Non-WEIRD Societies: A Reformulation of Happiness From a Chinese Cultural Perspective.

Positive psychology has made substantial contributions to the scientific understanding of human flourishing, yet its conceptual architecture remains disproportionately grounded in WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic) populations. Prevailing models privilege intrapersonal processes-autonomy, self-efficacy, and personal achievement-while systematically under-theorizing the relational and moral dimensions through which happiness is experienced and evaluated in non-WEIRD societies. This article proposes a reformulation of happiness through the construct of relational well-be

Gen Z and FoMO: A Configurational Analysis of Psychological Factors and Digital Dependence.

OBJECTIVE: This research investigates the configurational antecedents of multifaceted Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in Generation Z. The research explores the complex interdependencies of psychological factors and digital dependence (problematic social media use) factors giving rise to FoMO in Gen Z. METHOD: We used a survey research design combined with fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to examine the phenomenon among the Gen Z (n = 100) from a configurational rather than traditional linear perspective. RESULTS: Leveraging evidence from Gen Z social media users, the analysis d

Less Evaluative Measures of Personality in Job Applicant Contexts: The Effect on Socially Desirable Responding and Criterion Validity.

Researchers have long sought to mitigate the detrimental effects of socially desirable responding on personality assessments in high-stakes contexts. This study investigated the effect of reducing the social desirability of personality items on response distortion and criterion validity in a job applicant context. Using a 2 × 2 repeated measures design, participants (n = 584) completed standard (International Personality Item Pool) and less evaluative (Less Evaluative Five Factor Inventory) measures of Big Five personality in a low-stakes context and then several weeks later in a simulated job

The social perceptual deficits of schizophrenia.

This article summarizes a series of studies conducted by our group that examined the social perceptual deficits of schizophrenia. Research suggested that social perceptual deficits are more pronounced in patients with nonparanoid schizophrenia than comparison groups comprising normal controls or individuals with paranoid schizophrenia. The social perceptual deficits of schizophrenia were affected by the level of abstraction of cue descriptors; the level of emotional arousal engendered by the situation; the presence of extraneous, emotionally arousing stimuli; and the familiarity of the situati

Sleep impairment in patients with social phobia.

Patient reports of sleep difficulty and sleep quality were systematically assessed in 30 nondepressed, untreated patients with the generalized subtype of social phobia and 30 sex-matched and age-comparable healthy control subjects. Sleep characteristics of the preceding month were assessed using a standardized, validated instrument: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Patients with generalized social phobia reported significantly poorer sleep quality, longer sleep latency, more frequent sleep disturbance, and more severe daytime dysfunction. Global PSQI scores did not differ significant

Digital strain in the workplace: the role of instrumental social platform use on employee emotional exhaustion.

PURPOSE: As digitalization increasingly permeates work environments, employees' persistent use of social platforms for task management, collaboration, and information sharing (i. e., instrumental use) has become widespread. However, its potential negative impact on mental health remains under-examined. To explore this phenomenon, this study constructs a chained path model-"social tool use → digital fatigue → work-family conflict → emotional exhaustion"-based on resource conservation theory and boundary theory, while examining the moderating role of digital literacy. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROAC

Development and pilot testing of a risk assessment checklist for children of incarcerated parents in Hong Kong.

Children of incarcerated parents (CIP) are exposed to a range of biological, psychological, and social risks, yet existing risk assessment tools do not adequately capture incarceration-specific experiences. This article details the development of a comprehensive, theory-driven risk assessment checklist tailored to CIP aged 6-11, with consideration of the sociocultural context of Hong Kong. The checklist was developed using an integrative framework combining ecological systems theory and the biopsychosocial model. Items were adapted from validated instruments and supplemented with incarceration

Self-Reported Versus Objectively Logged Social Media Use: Implications for Measurement in Eating Disorder Research.

OBJECTIVE: Self-reported frequency measures of social media use (e.g., "How often do you use social media?") are convenient, yet their criterion validity against objective behavioral data remains largely untested in eating disorder research. We compared self-reports of TikTok use with objective data extracted from TikTok datafiles. METHODS: Participants (N = 103) including individuals with diagnosed eating disorders (n = 42) completed a Likert-type self-report measure of TikTok use frequency over the past month. Objective data included the total number of TikTok videos delivered, total number
