OBJECTIVE: Recent developments on high resolution micro computed tomography (μCT) allow imaging of soft tissues in small animal joints. Nevertheless, μCT images cannot distinguish soft tissues from synovial fluid due to their similar mass density, limiting the 3D assessment of soft tissues volume and thickness. This study aimed to evaluate a lead chromate contrast agent for μCΤ arthrography of rat knee joints ex vivo.
DESIGN: Intact tibiofemoral rat joints were injected with the contrast agent at different concentrations and imaged using a μCT at 2.7 μm isotropic voxel size. Cartilage thickne

Fibrosing mediastinitis is an uncommon benign disorder in which a chronic inflammatory reaction results in diffuse fibrosis of the mediastinum, potentially compromising the airways, great vessels and other mediastinal structures. Herein we describe a progressive course of fibrosing mediastinitis in a 72-year-old man. Computed tomography images depicted a diffuse, infiltrative, soft tissue mass involving the esophagus and superior vena cava in the mediastinum. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed destruction of the adjacent thoracic spine. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography also re

Soft skins with reversible thickness morphing represent a distinct and underexplored class of adaptive material interfaces. Unlike conventional soft actuators that achieve motion through bending, elongation, or twisting, these systems enable out-of-plane deformation, producing localized protrusion, retraction, and programmable contact mechanics without rigid support structures. This review reframes thickness modulation not merely as an actuation outcome, but as a material-architecture strategy that couples energy transduction, geometry, and compliance to enable new modes of haptic interaction,

PURPOSE: Micro-computed tomography (CT) analysis of soft tissues alongside bone remains challenging due to significant differences in X-ray absorption, preventing spatial inspection of bone remodeling including the cellular intricacies of mineralized tissues in developmental biology and pathology. The goal was to develop a protocol for contrast-enhanced micro-CT imaging that effectively visualizes soft tissues and cells in conjunction with bone while minimizing bone attenuation by decalcification.
APPROACH: Murine femur samples were decalcified in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and treated w

BACKGROUND: Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is a rare and highly malignant soft tissue tumor, usually occurring in the deep soft tissues of the distal tendons and aponeurosis of the extremities, especially the feet and knees. CCS originating in the head and neck is extremely rare. The clinical manifestations of CCS in the head and neck are not typical, and the imaging manifestations have certain characteristics, but the diagnosis still depends on pathological examination and genetic testing.
CASE SUMMARY: A 33-year-old male patient had paroxysmal headache for more than 4 years, accompanied by nausea

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel method to locate the malar eminence using 3-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT), and a new axis system for evaluation of malar eminence symmetry.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was carried out in 42 disease-free white adult patients. The 3D-CT reconstructions of the face were obtained, and the soft-tissue maxillozygion was used to locate the malar eminence. Other skeletal and soft-tissue landmarks (frontozygomatic suture, zygion, and orbitale) were evaluated. A patient-oriented axis system was constructed using 3 sagittal midline landmarks (nasion, sub

The stomatopod eye is a fascinating biological system capable of detecting both colour and polarization of light, making it a highly complex, mixed-tissue sample. In the investigation of complex biological systems, three-dimensional methods spanning multiple length scales with the power to resolve soft tissues are required. In this study, propagation-based phase contrast X-ray computed tomography with stitching at a 4th generation synchrotron was used to image a full stomatopod eye with sub-micron voxel size to illustrate how this method accommodates these demands. The images are based on natu

INTRODUCTION: Phosphoglyceride crystal deposition disease (PCDD) is characterized by the deposition of phosphoglyceride crystals in the soft tissue or bone, forming tumor-like structures.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a case of slow-growing PCDD of the rib followed for 11 years in a 84-year-old man who had received the surgery for lung cancer. The diagnosis was based on computed tomography (CT)-guided needle biopsy. Initial fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) conducted in 2015 showed no apparent abnormal findings in the left third rib bone.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has excellent spatial and soft tissue resolution in the periocular and orbital region, especially when combined with surface coil techniques. Other methods, including computed tomography, dacryocystography, and dacryoscintigraphy provide limited information in the area of the lacrimal drainage system. Magnetic resonance imaging was used in conjunction with other imaging modalities to compare the anatomic detail and clinically relevant information obtained about various pathologic processes in the lacrimal drainage area.

Computer-assisted surgery is the most significant recent advancement in osseous head and neck reconstruction. Computer-aided design (CAD) software allows computerized planning of resection and reconstruction. Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) can be used to create models, cutting guides, and patient-specific plates. Several studies have shown that these techniques are more accurate and result in decreased flap ischemia times compared with conventional techniques. CAD also facilitates the immediate placement of dental implants. The most useful application of computer-assisted surgery is delaye

BACKGROUND: Posterior mandibulectomy defects can be reconstructed using either soft tissue or vascularized bone. The authors hypothesize that advances in computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM) have resulted in osteocutaneous free flaps now proving superior to soft-tissue flaps.
METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective review of all free flap reconstructions of posterior mandibulectomy defects where the condyle was resected from 2005 to 2016.
RESULTS: Overall, 291 patients (mean age, 56.9 years; mean body mass index, 26.2 kg/m) underwent posterior mandible reconstruction with

A case of traumatic orbital encephalocele following a "blow-in" fracture is presented. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are shown. Although CT was useful for identifying the orbital roof fracture, bone fragments and soft tissue abnormalities, MRI was more sensitive to brain herniation and an intraorbital haematoma.

Primary angiosarcoma is a rare disease with a poor prognosis. It most commonly arises in the head and neck region; localization in the deep soft tissue of the neck is extremely rare. We herein present a case of angiosarcoma derived from the right internal jugular vein. A 79-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of a growing right neck mass. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography-computed tomography, and fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed a malignant tumor of unknown origin. Right neck dissection was performed for both diagnosis and therapy.

BACKGROUND: The most difficult aspect of diagnosing lung cancer is early diagnosis. According to the American Cancer Society, each year, there are around 11 million newly diagnosed instances of cancer worldwide. Radiologists often turn to Computed Tomography (CT) scans to diagnose respiratory conditions, which can reveal if lung tissue remains normal or abnormal. However, there is an increased chance of inaccuracy and delay; therefore, radiologists are concerned with the physical segmentation of nodules.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the research is to implement an advanced modified threshold s

Skin and soft tissue infections are common in the pediatric emergency department. Because pyomyositis occurs deep to the fascial plane, it is often difficult to appreciate on physical examination. The utility of point-of-care ultrasound for identifying pyomyositis is of great value to the pediatric emergency physician as this diagnosis has a different expected clinical course and requires different management than other skin and soft tissue infections. This case report describes a child who presented to the pediatric emergency department with leg pain and redness, initially concerning for an a

Pleural soft tissue density nodules with osteal protrusions are often detected at their characteristic site, the anterior portion of the rib tubercle. Herein, we report a pathologically proven case of this lesion. A 65-year-old man underwent surgery for primary lung cancer in the right middle lobe. Preoperative computed tomography showed a 10-mm pleural soft tissue density nodule with osteal protrusion anterior to the tubercle of the right sixth rib, and this lesion was concomitantly resected. Intraoperative findings showed that this pleural lesion originated from the parietal pleura and was p

Computed tomography (CT) provides axial slices plane and shows excellent details of bones and different soft tissues, favoring its use in traumatic lesions caused by sporting activities. Complex anatomical structures such as the shoulder, the vertebral column, the pelvis, the knee, the tarsal and carpal bones are often better recognized in detail than by conventional radiography. Fracture lines, localization of bone fragments and involvement of soft tissues are clearly demonstrated. Luxations and bone changes leading to luxations can be shown. CT arthrography provides for the first time a dire
