Short-term cortical plasticity associated with feedback-error learning after locomotor training in a patient with incomplete spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: For rehabilitation strategies to be effective, training should be based on principles of motor learning, such as fee … evoked potentials were elicited by electrical stimulation of the tibial nerve and recorded from the somatosensory cortex. Motor evoked potentials were generated with transcranial magnetic stimulation applied over the tibialis anterior muscle representation in the primary motor cortex. Effects of voluntary hyperventilation on cortical sensory responses. Electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic studies.

It is well established that voluntary hyperventilation (HV) slows down electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms. Little information is availabl … EFs originating at the supratemporal auditory cortex, as well as long-latency SEFs from the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) and from the opercular somatosensory cortex (OC), were all reduced during HV. The short-latency SEFs from SI were clearly less modified, there being, however, a slight reduction of the earliest cortical excitatory response, the N20m deflection. …

Gating of somatosensory neural oscillations across the lifespan: A narrative review.

Healthy and pathological aging are associated with progressive changes in cortical inhibition, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Somatosensory gating (SG), the brain's suppression of redundant tactile input, provides a pre-attentive marker of inhibitory function. Paired-pulse paradigms concurrent with noninvasive magnetoencephalography (MEG) provide a millisecond portrayal of the neural dynamics underlying somatosensory processing and the gating of such responses with excellent spatial resolution. This narrative review synthesizes SG research focusing on neur

Modulation of Cortical Activity by Selective Steady-State Somatosensory Stimulation.

Phantom limb pain (PLP) represents a major debilitating condition for amputees. No effective therapy has been reported. Non-painful surface electrical stimulation may induce temporary significant alleviation of PLP. Preliminary results of a study attempting to design a methodology for delivery and evaluation of possible quantifiable effects at the cortical level of steady-state surface stimulation are presented for two healthy subjects. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were evaluated before and after delivery of a steady-state stimulus applied at wrist along the median nerve. Characteriza

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields from the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices in healthy newborns.

Although brain development has been actively investigated in animals, maturation of the cerebral cortex in human newborns is still poorly understood. This study aimed at characterizing the cortical areas participating in tactile processing in human neonates. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields were recorded from 21 healthy full-term newborns during natural sleep. Altogether, four cortical areas were activated by tactile stimulation: the contra- and ipsilateral primary (SI) and secondary (SII) somatosensory cortices. The contralateral SI was activated first in all the newborns. This early acti

Visual responsiveness in sensorimotor cortex is increased following amputation and reduced after mirror therapy.

Phantom limb pain (PLP) following amputation, which is experienced by the vast majority of amputees, has been reported to be relieved with d … regions typically responsive to viewing hand actions, but not in regions corresponding to secondary somatosensory cortex. Finally, there was a significant correlation between initial visual responsiveness in sensorimotor cortex and reduction in PLP suggesting a potential marker for predicting efficacy of mirror therapy. Thus, enhanced visual responsiveness in sensorim …

Reduced parietal to frontal functional connectivity for dynamic balance in late middle-to-older adults.

In this study, we investigated the changes in functional connectivity between cortical regions for balance control during a challenging balance task with advancing age. Fourteen young and fourteen late middle-to-older adults performed a challenging balance task that manipulated somatosensory information while their brain activity was recorded using electroencephalography. Both groups showed common activation regions within the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and premotor cortex (PMC) during the balance task. The late middle-to-older group showed significantly weaker PCC to PMC functional conn

Afferent Connections of Cytoarchitectural Area 6M and Surrounding Cortex in the Marmoset: Putative Homologues of the Supplementary and Pre-supplementary Motor Areas.

Cortical projections to the caudomedial frontal cortex were studied using retrograde tracers in marmosets. We tested the hypothesis that cytoarchitectural area 6M includes homologues of the supplementary and pre-supplementary motor areas (SMA and pre-SMA) of other primates. We found that, irrespective of the injection sites' location within 6M, over half of the labeled neurons were located in motor and premotor areas. Other connections originated in prefrontal area 8b, ventral anterior and posterior cingulate areas, somatosensory areas (3a and 1-2), and areas on the rostral aspect of the dorsa

Neural mechanisms underlying touch-induced visual perceptual suppression: An fMRI study.

Crossmodal studies have demonstrated inhibitory as well as facilitatory neural effects in higher sensory association and primary sensory cortices. A recent human behavioral study reported touch-induced visual perceptual suppression (TIVS). Here, we introduced an experimental setting in which TIVS could occur and investigated brain activities underlying visuo-tactile interactions using a functional magnetic resonance imaging technique. While the suppressive effect of touch on vision was only found for half of the participants who could maintain their baseline performance above chance level (i.e

Histometric changes and cell death in the thalamus after neonatal neocortical injury in the rat.

Freezing injury to the developing cortical plate results in a neocortical malformation resembling four-layered microgyria. Previous work has demonstrated that following freezing injury to the somatosensory cortex, males (but not females) have more small and fewer large cells in the medial geniculate nucleus. In the first experiment, we examined the effects of induced microgyria to the somatosensory cortex on neuronal numbers, neuronal size, and nuclear volume of three sensory nuclei: ventrobasal complex, dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, and medial geniculate nucleus. We found that there was …

Consistent differences in brain structure and functional connectivity in high-altitude native Tibetans and immigrants.

It has been well-established that high-altitude (HA) environments affect the human brain; however, the differences in brain structural and functional networks between HA natives and acclimatized immigrants have not been well clarified. In this study, native HA Tibetans were recruited for comparison with Han immigrants (average of 2.3 ± 0.3 years at HA), with lowland residents recruited as controls. Cortical gray matter volume, thickness, and functional connectivity were investigated using magnetic resonance imaging data. In addition, reaction time and correct score in the visual movement task,

Neuropathology of murine Sanfilippo D syndrome.

Sanfilippo D syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type IIID) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by the deficiency of N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfatase (GNS). A mouse model was generated by constitutive knockout of the Gns gene. We studied affected mice and controls at 12, 24, 36, and 48 weeks of age for neuropathological markers of disease in the somatosensory cortex, primary motor cortex, ventral posterior nuclei of the thalamus, striatum, hippocampus, and lateral and medial entorhinal cortex. We found significantly increased immunostaining for glial fibrillary associated protein (GFAP), CD68 (a…

Studying the functional connectivity of the primary motor cortex with the binarized cross recurrence plot: The influence of Parkinson's disease.

Two new recurrence plot methods (the binary recurrence plot and binary cross recurrence plot) were introduced here to study the long-term dynamic of the primary motor cortex and its interaction with the primary somatosensory cortex, the anterior motor thalamus of the basal ganglia motor loop and the precuneous nucleus of the default mode network. These recurrence plot methods: 1. identify short-term transient interactions; 2. identify long-lasting delayed interactions that are common in complex systems; 3. work with non-stationary blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) data; 4. may study the rela…

Transcranial alternating current stimulation modulates cortical processing of somatosensory information in a frequency- and time-specific manner.

Neural oscillations can be modulated by non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, including transcranial alternating current stimulation (t … ring tACS applied at individual mu and beta frequencies and at the theta frequency over the primary somatosensory cortex (S1). Sham-tACS was used as a control condition. In a separate experiment, we assessed the time course of mu-tACS effects by recording SEPs before (T0), during (T1), and 1 min (T2) and 10 min (T3) after stimulation. Mu-tACS increased the amplitude o …

Neuropsychology of the parietal lobe: Luria's and contemporary conceptions.

The parietal lobe, constituting approximately 20% of the human brain, comprises two main regions: the somatosensory cortex and the posterior parietal cortex. The former is responsible for receiving and processing information from the organism itself or its external environment, while the latter performs concurrent summaries and higher cognitive functions. The present study seeks to integrate modern research findings with Luria's previous discoveries in order to gain a nuanced understanding of the roles assigned to the parietal lobe as well as its lateralization differences.

Chronic Hyperhomocysteinemia Impairs CSD Propagation and Induces Cortical Damage in a Rat Model of Migraine with Aura.

Hyperhomocysteinemia (hHCY) is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of homocysteine in plasma. hHCY correlates with a high risk of migraine headaches, especially migraine with aura. Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is a wave of depolarization passing through neurons and glial cells of the cortex and is considered an electrophysiological correlate of migraine aura. The aim of the present study was to analyze neuronal activity and CSD in the somatosensory cortex of rats in vivo with prenatal hHCY and to assess cortex viability after 2 h of CSD generation. Female rats were fed…

Thalamo-insular pathway conveying orofacial muscle proprioception in the rat.

Little is known about how proprioceptive signals arising from muscles reach to higher brain regions such as the cerebral cortex. We have rec … l part of granular insular cortex rostroventrally adjacent to the rostralmost part of the secondary somatosensory cortex (dGIrvs2). We also electrophysiologically confirmed that the dGIrvs2 received the proprioceptive inputs from JCMSs. The cortical eye proprioceptive signal modulates neural activity in higher-order visual cortex as predicted by the variation in visual sensitivity.

Whereas the links between eye movements and the shifts in visual attention are well established, less is known about how eye position affects the prioritization of visual space. It was recently observed that visual sensitivity varies with the direction of gaze and the level of excitability in the eye proprioceptive representation in human left somatosensory cortex (S1(EYE)), so that after 1Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over S1(EYE), targets presented nearer the center of the orbit are detected more accurately. Here we used whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imag…
