Comparative study of imaging and histology of sacroiliac joint in normal rats based on IVIM-DWI and DCE-MRI.

BACKGROUND: Currently, few studies have described the relationship between functional MRI findings and histology of normal sacroiliac joint (SIJ). Besides, due to the difficulties in access to SIJ, authentic animal models are important in providing opportunities for quantitative parameter extraction on imaging. AIMS: This study aimed at exploring the parameters of Intravoxel Incoherent Motion Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (IVIM-DWI) and Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) and comparing them with the histology of the SIJ in normal rats with different ages. METHODS: A t

Neuropsychiatric deep brain stimulation for translational neuroimaging.

From a neuroimaging point of view, deep brain stimulation (DBS) in psychiatric disorders represents a unique source of information to probe results gained in functional, structural and molecular neuroimaging studies in vivo. However, the implementation has, up to now, been restricted by the heterogeneity of the data reported in DBS studies. The aim of the present study was therefore to provide a comprehensive and standardized database of currently used DBS targets in selected psychiatric disorders (obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), treatment-resistant depression (TRD), Gilles de la Tourette

Japan's efforts to promote global health using satellite remote sensing data from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency for prediction of infectious diseases and air quality.

In this paper we review the status of new applications research of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for global health promotion using information derived from Earth observation data by satellites in cooperation with inter-disciplinary collaborators. Current research effort at JAXA to promote global public health is focused primarily on the use of remote sensing to address two themes: (i) prediction models for malaria and cholera in Kenya, Africa; and (ii) air quality assessment of small, particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3). Respiratory and cardivas

Laser-Induced Porous Graphene-Based Materials and Its Potential Application in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Laser-induced coal-based graphene (C-LIG) is a promising field in energy materials research that focuses on converting abundant coal resources into high-value graphene-based materials using low-cost and environmentally friendly processes. In this study, we successfully produced few-layer graphene from low-volatility bituminous coal under vacuum conditions using carbon dioxide infrared laser equipment. The results showed that the laser-induced graphene consists predominantly of 2-5 layers, featuring multipore structures with smaller-size pores on the pore walls. It also exhibits large interlaye

Failure analysis of the 'backfill column - Immediate roof' cooperative bearing structure in constructional backfill coal mining.

The present article introduces a method called Constructional Backfill Coal Mining (CBCM) for the purpose of minimizing the expenses of backfill mining and making use of the subterranean space in coal mines. Investigations are made on the failure properties of the cooperative bearing structure, which consists of a backfill column-immediate roof in CBCM. For the analysis of the fracturing characteristics of the immediate roof, a mechanical model of the thick circular plate on elastic foundation is developed. Furthermore, numerical simulation experiments have been carried out to study the manife

Exposure to green, blue, and biodiverse spaces and their associations with loneliness in urban adults: Findings from the EPIPorto cohort.

Emerging evidence suggests green space may reduce loneliness, while the role of blue space and biodiversity remains under-researched. This study examines associations between exposure to green, blue, and biodiverse spaces and loneliness in adults in Porto, Portugal and explores potential effect modifiers. Loneliness was assessed in 2022 in 657 EPIPorto cohort participants using the UCLA Loneliness Scale (>32 indicating 'high loneliness'). Vegetation and surface water were measured using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) within

Magnetic resonance imaging findings of the posterior fossa in 47 patients with mucopolysaccharidoses: A cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) is a group of hereditary multisystemic lysosomal disorders. Most neuroimaging studies in MPS have focused on the supratentorial compartment and craniocervical junction abnormalities, and data regarding posterior fossa findings are scarce in the literature. Thus, our purpose is to describe posterior fossa findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of MPS patients. METHODS: We reviewed routine MRI scans of MPS patients being followed up at our institution (types I, II, III, IV, and VI), focusing on posterior fossa structures. RESULTS: Forty-seven MPS p

The effects of spaced retrieval training in improving hyperphagia of people living with dementia in residential settings.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effectiveness of spaced retrieval for improving hyperphagia in patients with dementia in residential care settings. BACKGROUND: Although 10-30% of patients with dementia have hyperphagia, most studies have focused on eating difficulties. Only a few studies have focused on hyperphagia. Various memory problems cause hyperphagia in patients with dementia. Spaced retrieval, a cognitive technique for information learning, can be used as a training method to improve memory loss. Recent studies showed that patients who received the training successfully memori

Plant Extracts as a Source of Natural Products with Potential Antimalarial Effects: An Update from 2018 to 2022.

Malaria kills more than 500,000 people yearly, mainly affecting Africa and Southeast Asia. The disease is caused by the protozoan parasite from the genus Plasmodium, with Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum being the main species that cause the disease in humans. Although substantial progress has been observed in malaria research in the last years, the threat of the spread of Plasmodium parasites persists. Artemisinin-resistant strains of this parasite have been reported mainly in Southeast Asia, highlighting the urgent need to develop more effective and safe antimalarial drugs. In this

Static and Motion Facial Analysis for Craniofacial Assessment and Diagnosing Diseases.

Deviation from a normal facial shape and symmetry can arise from numerous sources, including physical injury and congenital birth defects. Such abnormalities can have important aesthetic and functional consequences. Furthermore, in clinical genetics distinctive facial appearances are often associated with clinical or genetic diagnoses; the recognition of a characteristic facial appearance can substantially narrow the search space of potential diagnoses for the clinician. Unusual patterns of facial movement and expression can indicate disturbances to normal mechanical functioning or emotional a

Analysis of nanostructure of red blood cells membranes by space Fourier transform of AFM images.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) allows a researcher to obtain images of red blood cells (RBC) and their membranes. Various effects on blood lead to surface alterations of cell membranes. Such alterations are estimated by a corrugation of membrane surface. This problem is complicated for statistical analysis because the membrane is the ensemble of structures with different sizes. In the present work we used the space Fourier transform to decompose the complex AFM image of the surface into three simpler ones. The parameters of spectral windows were selected according to the natural structures of R

Intercalation of trichloroethene by sediment-associated clay minerals.

The objective of this research was to examine the potential for intercalation of trichloroethene (TCE) by clay minerals associated with aquifer sediments. Sediment samples were collected from a field site in Tucson, AZ. Two widely used Montmorillonite specimen clays were employed as controls. X-ray diffraction, conducted with a controlled-environment chamber, was used to characterize smectite interlayer d-spacing for three treatments (bulk air-dry sample, sample mixed with synthetic groundwater, sample mixed with TCE-saturated synthetic groundwater). The results show that the d-spacing measure

Factors Affecting Material-Cart Handling in the Roofing Industry: Evidence for Administrative Controls.

Material-cart handling can be strenuous and lead to overexertion injuries. The aim of this study is to produce a thorough understanding of how the cart condition, tire type, physical environment-related factors, and load interact to influence the ergonomics and productivity of cart handling. Eighteen roofing carts with different conditions, tires, and loads were tested by one subject on three laboratory tracks: one L-shaped, one with ramps within constrained spaces, and one with obstacles within constrained spaces. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to quantify the main and in

Dynamic prototypicality effects in visual search.

In recent studies, researchers have discovered a larger neural activation for stimuli that are more extreme exemplars of their stimulus class, compared with stimuli that are more prototypical. This has been shown for faces as well as for familiar and novel shape classes. We used a visual search task to look for a behavioral correlate of these findings regarding both simple geometrical shapes and more complex, novel shape classes. The latter stimulus set enabled us to control for the physical properties of the shapes, establishing that the effects are solely due to the positions of the particul

Laughter ≠ Humour: Sounding, Face and Masculinity Between Prison and Street.

Humour and laughter have received increasing attention in narrative criminology, but existing scholarship has tended to collapse them into a single analytic entity. In this paper, we foreground the awkward spaces that lie in the space between. Based on two research projects carried out with street and justice-involved men in Scotland, where the fusion of masculinities, humour and 'patter' has for many years formed an important aspect of culture and identity, we first examine the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in moments where laughter follows humour. We then move onto an examination of hu

Life in space may help life on Earth.

Teams of chronobiologists from the U.S., Russia, and Japan are working toward a remote computerized health care system which, once tested in space, may change how doctors diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and conditions predisposing stroke. The system is based on ongoing research indicating that swings in blood pressure charted over a span of 24 hr or longer, rather than a single systolic and diastolic reading, can reveal a new major risk factor for heart disease.

Voice, Counterspaces, and Ethical Care in Research With Black Women With Trauma and Incarceration Histories.

Formerly incarcerated women face diverse challenges to re-entry, which include recovering from health illnesses and trauma to navigating various systems of stigma and surveillance. It is these multilevel challenges to reintegration that also make formerly incarcerated women vulnerable participants in research. As such, this qualitative study explores how 28 formerly incarcerated Black women experience the research interview process. Findings revealed that women participated in research because these contexts were viewed as spaces for "truth telling" and increasing awareness that can effect cha

A probabilistic orthopaedic population model to predict fatigue-related subacromial geometric variability.

Fatigue-related glenohumeral and scapulothoracic kinematic relationships, in addition to morphological characteristics of the scapula and humerus, affect the dimensions of the subacromial space. Each exhibits considerable interpersonal variability, which if only considering the mean, can lead to misleading population estimations of subacromial impingement risk, particularly for outliers. Additionally, the relative influence of each parameter on subacromial space variability is unclear. Applying empirically-derived morphological and kinematic distributions (n=31), this research used Advanced Me
