Momentary dynamics of inner speech varieties, auditory verbal hallucinations, and affect in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: an experience sampling study.

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) may arise from misattributed inner speech. However, it is unclear if inner speech frequency and phenomenology differ in schizophrenia-spectrum voice-hearers compared with healthy individuals, and how different inner speech varieties relate to AVH and affect. Using experience sampling methodology (ESM), this study examined the moment-to-moment dynamics between inner speech varieties, AVH, and affect. METHODS: Participants completed 6 days of ESM on an electronic device, responding to 10 daily prompts on

Variable High-Frequency Deep Brain Stimulation of the Subthalamic Nucleus for Speech Disorders in Parkinson's Disease: A Case Report.

Background and Importance: It is known that subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) at a fixed high frequency (>100 Hz) improves the primary motor symptoms of Parkinson disease (PD), but this stimulation does not improve or may even exacerbate the later-occurring axial symptoms and signs in PD (e.g., problems with gait or speech). Recent evidence suggests that STN-DBS at a fixed lower frequency (< 100 Hz) can improve speech and gait, but may worsen the tremor in PD. Clinical Presentation: The case involved a female patient who developed severe speech problems after 16 years high-f

[Comparative Analysis of the Brain Activity during Verbal and Spatial Thinking in Healthy Subjects and Patients with Speech Disorders].

We analyzed the specific brain activity, measured by fMRI in spatial and verbal tasks, in 15 healthy sub- jects and in 9 patients with dysarthria or mild sensorimotor aphasia. In healthy participants, verbal thinking was characterized by activation in Brodmann area 19 and Broca area while specific activation for spatial thinking was observed in bilateral temporal-occipital-parietal areas, left insula, left visual fields 17 and 18. In patients with impaired speech, this distribution of networks specific to a particular type of task underwent significant changes with deactivation of the brain ar

Inter-word variability of Hungarian affricates /ʦ, ʧ/ in the speech of monolingual children with and without language disorders.

This study focuses on the characteristics of inter-word variability (IWV) with respect to two Hungarian affricates (/ʦ, ʧ/) produced by children with typical language development (children with TD) aged 3;0-5;11, and those with primary expressive language disorders (children with LD) with the mean age of 6;7. IWV is described in terms of frequency of occurrence, the segments realised in place of the targets and the error patterns resulting in variable production. Findings revealed that variability is characteristic of the production of /ʧ/ in younger children with TD, and of both affricates in

Exploring motor speech patterns in adults with minimally verbal autism spectrum disorder through surface electromyography.

INTRODUCTION: It is well known that standardized neuropsychological testing frequently fails to capture the true capacity and full range of abilities in individuals with minimally verbal autism spectrum disorder (mvASD) due to difficulties with motor speech skills. Here we used Surface Electromyography (sEMG), a non-invasive method that captures action potentials during muscle movements, to examine the motor basis of speech production challenges in adults with minimally verbal autism spectrum disorder (mvASD). METHOD: sEMG data were collected from 8 sensors placed on the face and neck while p

Sung Speech Training Improves Prosodic Focus Marking in a Nondominant Language in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Music and speech prosody share notable parallels, and music-based interventions have shown promise in fostering language development and social responsiveness. Song-based training, leveraging acoustic similarities between song and speech, is especially effective. This study examined whether short-term song-based training could enhance prosodic focus-marking in nondominant languages for autistic children. Specifically, it explored improvements in focus-marking strategies, such as on-focus expansion (OFE) and post-focus compression (PFC), and the number of prosodic correlates used.

A case report of a patient with neurodevelopmental disorder with impaired speech and hyperkinetic movements: A biallelic variant in the ZNF142 gene.

Biallelic pathogenic variations in the zinc finger protein 142 (ZNF142) gene are associated with neurodevelopmental disorder with impaired speech and hyperkinetic movements (NEDISHM). This disorder is characterized by developmental delay, intellectual disability, speech delay, and movement disorders such as dystonia, tremor, ataxia, and chorea. Here, we report a patient who exhibited common neurological features and rarely reported brain MRI findings. Exome sequencing identified a novel biallelic variant in ZNF142 (c.3528_3529delTG; p.C1176fs*5 (NM_001105537.4)). NEDISHM was first described by

A Systematic Review of the Efficacy of Early Initiation of Speech Therapy and Its Positive Impact on Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that consists predominantly of an apparent early delay in communication and social skills. Among the multiple identified etiologies, genetics play a key role. The implementation of early interventional therapy for children with ASD is starting to show promising results. A few medical databases were used to collect multiple published types of research, which were thoroughly screened. Ultimately, a small amount was selected according to the defined eligibility criteria. The 12 articles that were reviewed involved a more significant number of boys tha

22q13.33 duplication involving SHANK3 gene: a boy and his mother with "persistent" language and speech sound disorder.

Patients carrying 22q13.33 duplication present variable neurodevelopmental phenotype. Among these, patients with genetic alteration disrupting SHANK3 gene are very rare and they also present neurodevelopmental disorder such as autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. The real incidence is unknown because mild and variable phenotype could cause reduction in diagnosed cases. We describe the first case of 22q13.33 microduplication disrupting SHANK3 gene, inherited from mother to son, that presents a "persistent" language and speech sound disorder as main symptom without intellectual

Do variants in the coding regions of FOXP2, a gene implicated in speech disorder, confer a risk for congenital amusia?

Congenital amusia is a lifelong disorder that compromises the normal development of musical abilities in 1.5-4% of the general population. There is a substantial genetic contribution to congenital amusia, and it bears similarities to neurodevelopmental disorders of language. Here, we examine the extent to which variants in the forkhead box P2 gene (FOXP2)-the first gene to be identified as causal in developmental speech deficits-are associated with the amusic trait. Using a cohort of 49 individuals with amusia, of which 27 were unrelated, the role of FOXP2 variants in amusia was evaluated. Fou

Speech Sound Disorder Treatment Approaches Used by School-Based Clinicians: An Application of the Experience Sampling Method.

PURPOSE: Children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) comprise a large portion of caseloads for school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Despite the existence of several evidence-based SSD intervention approaches, the translation from research to practice is often limited by ecological validity because of various factors unique to school settings (e.g., scheduling constraints, caseload size, child availability). The purpose of this study was to use the experience sampling method (ESM) to examine the current practices of school-based SLPs when treating children with SSDs on their caselo

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Improves Semantic Speech-Gesture Matching in Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) have severe deficits in speech and gesture processing that contribute considerably to the burden of this disorder. Brain imaging shows left inferior frontal gyrus involvement for impaired processing of co-verbal gestures in patients with schizophrenia. Recently, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the left frontal lobe has been shown to modulate processing of co-verbal gestures in healthy subjects. Although tDCS has been used to reduce symptoms of patients with SSD, the effects of tDCS on gesture processing deficits

[On the history of the problem of the rehabilitative treatment of the subjects suffering wounds in the maxillofacial region with the concomitant disorders of the speech function].

The authors made an attempt to highlight the issues of rehabilitation of the patients suffering wounds in the maxillofacial region with the concomitant disorders in the function of the organs of speech. The secondary objective of the study was to prove that rehabilitation of such patients is possible only by means of the joint efforts and close cooperation of dentists, physiotherapists, and speech therapists. The results of the clinical observations of the most severe cases of the impaired speech function obtained in the evacuation hospitals have been considered, with the special emphasis plac
