BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is isolated frequently from surgical site infections and other soft tissue infections. There are limited data examining the prevalence of methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) among Egyptian patients after surgery. The current study determined the prevalence of MRSA isolated from surgical site and soft tissue infections at Minia University Hospital (MUH), determined their susceptibility to β-lactams and other antimicrobials, and examined their mecA gene expression.
METHODS: A total of 208 hospitalized patients attending the General Surgery Depart

BACKGROUND: Peritonitis is a major complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Staphylococcus species are gram-positive bacteria that are most commonly associated with peritoneal peritonitis. The increasing antimicrobial resistance rate is a severe burden when considering the initial choice of antibiotics. This investigation examined the trends of staphylococcal infection as well as the resistance rate and clinical outcomes from 2006 to 2015 in southern Taiwan.
METHODS: We retrospectively investigated all PD-related peritonitis episodes in southern Taiwan between January 2006 and December 2015

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a commensal bacterium and an opportunistic pathogen causing a wide variety of infections ranging from localized skin and soft tissue infections to life-threatening severe bacteremia, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, atopic dermatitis, prosthetic joint infection, staphylococcal food poisoning, medical device-related infections, and pneumonia. It is attributed to an acquired resistant gene, mecA, encoding penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a). PBP2a is an essential protein responsible for the resistivity of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) to various beta-l

Three cases of Hyper-IgE syndrome are herein described, corresponding to patients aged six, twelve and 4 years, who from infancy, had suffered a variety of recurrent pulmonary infections, staphylococcal cold abscesses and chronic dermatitis. IgE counts were superior to 2.000 u/ml and eosinophilia surpassed 0.6 x 10(9) cells/l in all three cases. Deficits in the mytogen and chemotaxis responses were also seen. These patients were treated with I.V. gammaglobulin, anti-biotherapy and ascorbic acid. The possible physiopathology of this syndrome and its association with different alterations to pul

Nosocomial infections of 1356 mothers and their newborn have been analyzed and compared in three different regimens for postnatal care of newborn (rooming-in service, mixed service and central newborn nursery). The average nosocomial infection rate of mothers was significantly lower in the rooming-in service as compared to the newborn nursery. Most common nosocomial infections of mothers were urinary tract infections, endometritis, wound infection, enteritis and mastitis; in newborn enteritis, oral candida infections, panaritium, conjunctivitis and staphylococcus skin infections. Staphylococca

Hyper IgE syndrome (Job's syndrome) is a rare multiorgan disease characterized by the triad: elevated serum IgE level, recurrent sinopulmonary infections, most often staphylococcal, and cutaneous cold abscesses starting in infancy. We report 21 years old patient with hyper IgE syndrome, diagnosed at age of 6 years on the basis of hyperimmunoglobulinaemia E and recurrent pulmonary and cutaneous infections. Now he was admitted because of pneumonia complicating with pneumatocele, which could not be resolved despite intravenous antibiotics. Surgical intervention was necessary. The postoperative pe

Cefozopran (CZOP, SCE-2787) was given intravenously to 12 children with acute bacterial infections including 9 with acute pneumonia, 1 each with acute pyothorax, impetigo and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. Good or excellent clinical responses were obtained in all of the 12 patients and bacterial eradications were achieved for all 10 strains identified in these cases. No side effects were noted. Eosinophilia was observed in one case, however. From the above clinical results, it appears that CZOP is a useful antibiotic for treatment of pediatric patients with various bacterial infections.

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is the medical term used to define a skin condition induced by the exfoliative toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus. The disorder is also known as Ritter disease, bullous impetigo, neonatal pemphigus, or staphylococcal scarlet fever. The disease especially affects infants and small children, but has also been described in adults. Prompt therapy with proper antibiotics and supportive treatment has led to a decrease in the mortality rate. The current case report describes the clinical progress of a patient with generalized erythema and fever, follo

Hospitalized neonates are commonly colonized soon after birth with Staphylococcus aureus. The majority of neonates do not develop infectious sequelae; however, premature neonates appear to be more susceptible to serious infections, such as pneumonia. We report a case of an extremely low birth weight infant who developed necrotizing pneumonia due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcal aureus (MRSA). The MRSA isolate from this neonate is identical to the strains that have been causing primarily community-associated skin and soft tissue infections. The severe course of this patient may be attrib

The results of the prospective survey of hospital infections in mothers and newborns at the obstetrical clinic of the Edouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon are presented. Surveillance lasting six successive years covered 18,026 deliveries with or without the use of cesarean section. The incidence of hospital infections (not taking into account cases of bacteriuria) was 1.6% in parturient women not subjected to cesarean section and 11.7% in those having had this operation. Urinary tract and parietal infections, endometritis were in leading cases. The average incidence of hospital infection in newbor

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are liked with food poisoning and other related infections. Nafcillin is an antibiotic used to treat S. aureus. Therefore, it is of interest to study the molecular interactions of 25 nafcillin analogues with enterotoxin I using molecular docking analysis. The analysis shows optimal interaction features of Nafcillin analogues with Enterotoxin I from Staphylococcus aureus for further consideration.

Hyperimmunoglobulinemia E (Job's) syndrome is characterized by markedly increased levels of immunoglobulin E, recurrent cutaneous and systemic pyogenic infections, atopic dermatitis, and peripheral eosinophilia. Although ocular involvement in Job's syndrome is rare, there are reports of keratoconus, staphylococcal chalazia with blepharitis, and endophthalmitis by various authors. We present the first case report of retinal detachment with complicated cataract in Job's syndrome.

Staphylococcal superantigens (SAgs) comprise a large family of exotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus strains. These exotoxins are important in a variety of serious human diseases, including menstrual and nonmenstrual toxic shock syndrome (TSS), staphylococcal pneumonia and infective endocarditis, and recently described staphylococcal purpura fulminans and extreme pyrexia syndrome. In addition, these SAg exotoxins are being increasingly recognized for their possible roles in many other human diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, Kawasaki syndrome, nasal polyposis, and certain autoimmune di

BACKGROUND: The characterization of staphylococcal species that colonize pets is important to maintain animal health and to minimize the risk of transmission to owners. Here, the prevalence of Staphylococcus spp. and methicillin resistance was investigated in canine and feline isolates, and risk factors of staphylococcal colonization were determined. Pets were examined and separated into four groups: (1) healthy dogs, (2) healthy cats, and (3) dogs and (4) cats with clinical signs of bacterial infections of skin, mucous membranes, or wounds. Specimens were collected by a veterinary physician f

PURPOSE: The treatment of device-related infections is challenging and current anti-microbial compounds have poor anti-biofilm activity. We aimed to identify and characterize novel compounds effective in the eradication of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms.
METHODOLOGY: Two novel compounds, MMV665953 {1-(3-chloro-4-fluorophenyl)-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)urea} and MMV665807{5-chloro-2-hydroxy-N-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]benzamide}, effective in killing S. aureus biofilms, were identified by screening of the open access 'malaria box' chemical library. The minimum bactericidal concentrations, half-ma

BACKGROUND: The pathogenicity of staphylococcus aureus is dependent largely upon its ability to secrete a number of virulence factors, therefore, anti-virulence strategy to combat S. aureus-mediated infections is now gaining great interest. It is widely recognized that some plant essential oils could affect the production of staphylococcal exotoxins when used at subinhibitory concentrations. Perilla [Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton], a natural medicine found in eastern Asia, is primarily used as both a medicinal and culinary herb. Its essential oil (perilla oil) has been previously demonstrate
