Fatty liver-induced changes in stereotypic behavior in rats and effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 analog on stereotypy.

Although understanding the relation between psychotic behavior and immune abnormalities has been the focus of research for many years, it remains to be elucidated whether the changes in cytokine levels are part of etiology or a result of the stress associated with the disorder. In accordance with previous studies on changes in cytokine levels due to metabolic changes and psychosis, we hypothesized that fatty liver may potentiate apomorphine-induced stereotypy in a rodent model and that a synthetic glucagon-like peptide-1 analog exenatide would ameliorate this effect. In this study, 18 male Spr

Stereotyped B-cell receptors in one-third of chronic lymphocytic leukemia: a molecular classification with implications for targeted therapies.

Mounting evidence indicates that grouping of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) into distinct subsets with stereotyped BCRs is functionally and prognostically relevant. However, several issues need revisiting, including the criteria for identification of BCR stereotypy and its actual frequency as well as the identification of "CLL-biased" features in BCR Ig stereotypes. To this end, we examined 7596 Ig VH (IGHV-IGHD-IGHJ) sequences from 7424 CLL patients, 3 times the size of the largest published series, with an updated version of our purpose-built clustering algorithm. We document that CLL ma

Stereotypes about people living with HIV: implications for perceptions of HIV risk and testing frequency among at-risk populations.

Although research continues to demonstrate that HIV stigma is associated with decreased HIV testing, the psychological processes implicated in this association remain unclear. The authors address this gap by differentiating between the HIV stigma mechanisms of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. They hypothesize that HIV stereotypes specifically, more so than prejudice or discrimination, are associated with HIV testing among at-risk populations. Ninety-three HIV-negative people receiving methadone maintenance therapy at a clinic in the northeastern United States participated by complet

Complex effects of mGluR5 antagonism on sociability and stereotypic behaviors in mice: possible implications for the pharmacotherapy of autism spectrum disorders.

Balb/c mice display deficits of sociability; for example, they show reduced locomotor activity in the presence of an enclosed or freely-moving social stimulus mouse. Transgenic mice with defective or diminished expression of NMDA receptors manifest impaired sociability, while a partial and full agonist of the obligatory glycine co-agonist binding site on the NMDA receptor improved sociability in the Balb/c mouse strain. Because 2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)-pyridine (MPEP), an antagonist of the mGluR5 metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR), reduced self-grooming behavior in BTBR T+tfJ (BTBR) mic

Acute intranigral homocysteine administration produces stereotypic behavioral changes and striatal dopamine depletion in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Homocysteine has been considered a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and patients with hyperhomocystinemia exhibit neurological and psychological abnormalities. Elevated level of this molecule in the blood of Parkinson's disease patients receiving long-term l-DOPA therapy prompted us to investigate whether homocysteine is neurotoxic to the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system in Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals infused unilaterally with different doses of homocysteine (0.25-1 micromol in 1 microl) intranigrally exhibited significant and dose-dependent decrease in dopamine levels in the i

Different effects of chronic exposure to ELF magnetic field on spontaneous and amphetamine-induced locomotor and stereotypic activities in rats.

The effects of chronic (7 days) exposure to an extremely low frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF, 50 Hz, 0.5 mT) on spontaneous and amphetamine-induced (1.5mg/kg, i.p.) locomotor and stereotypic activities in adult rats were examined by open field test for 2h on exposure days 1, 3, and 7. After 1 day of exposure to ELF-MF, the spontaneous locomotor activity was increased clearly at the first hour of observation and significantly at the second one as compared to the corresponding values in other series with ELF-MF and sham-exposed animals. After 7 days of exposure to ELF-MF, an amphetamine enhanci

Electroconvulsive seizure behavior in Drosophila: analysis of the physiological repertoire underlying a stereotyped action pattern in bang-sensitive mutants.

Drosophila bang-sensitive mutants display a remarkable stereotyped behavioral sequence during mechanical disturbances. This seizure repertoire consists of initial and delayed bouts of spasm interposed with paralysis and followed by recovery of activity and a period of refractoriness to further stimulation. Electroconvulsive stimuli across the brain induced a similar seizure behavior in tethered flies, in which corresponding electrophysiological events could be readily recorded in indirect flight muscles [dorsal longitudinal muscles (DLMs)] of the giant fiber (GF) pathway. The DLM physiological

Effects of living room, Snoezelen room, and outdoor activities on stereotypic behavior and engagement by adults with profound mental retardation.

Two experiments were conducted to test the effect of a room with sensory equipment, or Snoezelen room, on the stereotypic behavior and engagement of adults with profound mental retardation. In Experiment 1, participants were observed in their living room before and after attending the Snoezelen room. Results showed that there tended to be a reduction in stereotypy and increase in engagement when participants went from their living room to the Snoezelen room, and a return of these behaviors to pre-Snoezelen levels in the living room. Positive effects in the Snoezelen room did not carryover to t

Effects of dopamine agonists and antagonists on PCP-induced stereotyped behaviour and social isolation in the rat social interaction test.

Phencyclidine (PCP) can induce a model psychosis in humans that resembles an acute schizophrenic psychosis. In animal models of schizophrenia, PCP induces locomotor hyperactivity, stereotyped behaviour and social isolation, and the purpose of the present study was to describe the ability of dopamine agonists and antagonists to mimic or interact with these PCP-induced behaviours in rats. The compounds were administered daily for 3 days in combination with vehicle or 2.0 mg/kg PCP and the rats were tested in the social interaction test on the last day of drug administration. The study showed tha

The impact of ratee's disability on performance judgments and choice as partner: the role of disability-job fit stereotypes and interdependence of rewards.

An experiment assessed the impact of disability-job fit stereotypes and reward interdependence on personnel judgments about persons with disabilities. Students (N = 87) evaluated 3 confederates. The experiment varied disability of the target confederate (dyslexia vs. nondisabled), task, and dependence of rater rewards on partner performance. Two disability-task combinations represented stereotypical poor fit and good fit. Dependent variables were performance evaluations, performance expectations, and ranking of target as a partner. There was negative bias against the confederate with dyslexia

Bem Sex-role Inventory stereotypes for men and women varying in age and race among National Register psychologists.

554 psychologists listed in the National Register of Health Care Providers in Psychology used the Bem Sex-role Inventory to rare a "mature, healthy, socially competent" individual in one of 18 target groups (a black or race-unspecified man, woman, or adult in their late 20s, late 40s, or late 60s). Factor analysis produced factors which generated three scales--nurturant, agentic, and self-governing. The attributes "feminine" and "masculine" were treated as individual items. Old targets were viewed as less agentic than younger targets and as less self-governing than the middle-aged. Female targ

Diazepam attenuates the antagonism of haloperidol against apomorphine-induced stereotypic behavior after subchronic but not acute treatment in rats.

Apomorphine-induced stereotypic behavior was investigated in rats treated with diazepam or haloperidol and with the combination of both drugs in a one day trial or subchronically. The drugs were administered via the drinking water. Diazepam dose-dependently reduced apomorphine stereotypies after the subchronic (6 days) but not after the acute treatment. Haloperidol suppressed apomorphine-induced stereotypic behavior dose-dependently after acute as well as after subchronic administration apparently without the development of tolerance. This discrepancy to other studies may be explained by the c

Associations between music teachers' Big Five personality traits and their stereotypical beliefs about students gifted for music.

Teachers' beliefs about gifted students may influence instructional practices and students' educational development. While previous research has focused primarily on beliefs about intellectually gifted students, little is known about beliefs regarding students gifted for music and their relation to teacher characteristics. The present experimental vignette-based online study investigated whether music teachers' Big Five personality traits are associated with their beliefs about students gifted for music. A sample of 392 (prospective) music teachers evaluated a fictitious student presented in a

Stereotypical thinking in the historiography of science and religion: creation and reception history of Reijer Hooykaas's Religion and the Rise of Modern Science.

Historians of science and religion have occasionally resorted to stereotypes, rejecting harmonious accounts without clear justifications. This article chronicles the creation and reception history of Religion and the Rise of Modern Science (1972), written by one so-called harmony promoting historian, Reijer Hooykaas (1906-1994). Over the decades, the book has received substantial criticism and praise. Based on our research on publications and archival materials - primarily comprising correspondence between Hooykaas, friends, colleagues, and publishers - we show that the multifaceted creation h

Rape Stereotypes, Younger Age, and Social Support Are Associated with Concerns About Help-Seeking at a Sexual Assault Center.

Sexual assault can lead to long-term health problems, yet many victims do not seek help from sexual assault centers. This cross-sectional observational study examined factors distinguishing help-seekers from non-help-seekers and identified factors related to concerns about help-seeking in non-help-seekers. A sample of 669 recent sexual assault victims (97.5% women; mean age 26) was recruited from sexual assault centers and social media; 251 had attended a sexual assault center and 418 had not. Multiple logistic regression was used to identify factors differentiating help-seekers and non-help-s

EXPRESS: Inferring Pink- and Blue-Collar Jobs: Children's Eye Movements When Reading Gender Stereotyped Occupations.

Adult readers form inferences while they read, including those corresponding to expectations about the stereotypical gender associated with particular occupations (e.g., Duffy & Keir, 2004). For example, when reading "The surgeon reminded herself to check on the patient," adult readers experience a "mismatch effect" when they encounter the unexpected mismatching female pronoun. The current study aimed to explore whether or not children, ages 8-12 years old, draw gendered inferences about occupations while they are reading sentences. The eye-movement record indicated that developing readers do

EXPRESSION OF IMMUNOGLOBULIN LIGHT CHAIN GENES IN STEREOTYPED CASES FROM UKRAINIAN COHORT OF CHRONIC LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKEMIA PATIENTS.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of immunoglobulin heavy chain gene (IGHV) rearrangements expressed in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells has provided insights into the B-cell receptor (BCR) repertoire in CLL. In more than 40% of CLL patients, (quasi)identical or stereotyped BCR is expressed. The recent data point at the non-stochastic expression of immunoglobulin light lambda (IGLV) or kappa (IGKV) chains as well. Several pairs of IGHV and IGK/LV have been described for some major stereotyped subsets, but most subsets have not been characterized. AIM: To study the IGK/LV gene expression in stereot
