β-thujaplicin (BTJ) is an organic compound with medicinal potential. Its activity against pathogenic Streptococcus species has been insufficiently investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of β-thujaplicin against more than 30 reference and clinical isolates of Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, and to assess its effect on the intrinsic low-level resistance of these bacteria to aminoglycosides. Susceptibility of β-thujaplicin and selected aminoglycosides was determined using the broth microdilution method. The modulatory …

The incidence of invasive disease due to Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus [GBS]) in adults is on the rise; however, meningitis in adults due to GBS remains rare. We report 2 cases of GBS meningitis complicating elective abortion, 1 of which was a septic incomplete abortion. Only 1 case of bacterial meningitis complicating elective abortion has been reported previously.

Φm46.1 - Streptococcus pyogenes bacteriophage carrying mef(A) and tet(O), respectively, encoding resistance to macrolides (M phenotype) and tetracycline - is widespread in S. pyogenes but has not been reported outside this species. Φm46.1 is transferable in vitro among S. pyogenes isolates, but no information is available about its transferability to other Streptococcus species. We thus investigated Φm46.1 for its ability to be transduced in vitro to recipients of different Streptococcus species. Transductants were obtained from recipients of Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus gordonii, a…

BACKGROUND: Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) is a life-threatening condition caused by beta-hemolytic streptococci (BHS). Streptococcus pyogenes is the main causative agent of this disease; other BHS such as Streptococcus agalactiae or Streptococcus dysgalactiae could also cause STSS. However, the clinical characteristics of STSS caused by other types of BHS remain poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the likelihood of STSS development in various streptococcal species.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study using adult medical records of patients with inv…

A cross-sectional study was carried out from May to September 2011 on 35 smallholder dairy farms in Chiang Mai, Thailand, to identify the quarter, cow, and farm factors that relate to intramammary infections (IMI) from major specified pathogens, compared to infections from minor pathogens. Data on general farm management, milking management, and dry cow management were recorded for each herd. Quarter milk samples were collected from either clinical or subclinical mastitis quarters. Dependent variables were binary data defining the specified major pathogens, including Streptococcus agalactiae (…

Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts of up to 50% of healthy adults and newborns; it is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. Early detection can be used to establish the use of antibiotic prophylaxis to significantly reduce neonatal sepsis. This article reviews methods of detection and prevention of GBS infection in the neonate.

We sought to determine whether pre-eclampsia, spontaneous preterm birth or the delivery of infants who are small for gestational age were associated with the presence of bacterial DNA in the human placenta. Here we show that there was no evidence for the presence of bacteria in the large majority of placental samples, from both complicated and uncomplicated pregnancies. Almost all signals were related either to the acquisition of bacteria during labour and delivery, or to contamination of laboratory reagents with bacterial DNA. The exception was Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus)…

Osteomyelitis is a devastating complication of orthopaedic surgery and commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Group B Streptococcus (GBS, S. agalactiae). Clinically, S. aureus osteomyelitis is associated with local inflammation, abscesses, aggressive osteolysis, and septic implant loosening. In contrast, S. agalactiae orthopaedic infections generally involve soft tissue, with acute life-threatening vascular spread. While preclinical models that recapitulate the clinical features of S. aureus bone infection have proven useful for research, no animal models of S. agalactiae ost

Streptococcus agalactiae, often referred to as group B streptococci (GBS), is a severe pathogen that can infect humans as well as other animals, including tilapia, which is extremely popular in commercial aquaculture. This pathogen causes enormous pecuniary loss, and typical symptoms of streptococcosis-the disease caused by S. agalactiae-include abnormal behavior, exophthalmos, and meningitis, among others. Multiple studies have examined virulence factors associated with S. agalactiae infection, and vaccines were explored, including studies of subunit vaccines. Known virulence factors include …

Streptococcus agalactiae, or group B Streptococcus (GBS), is the major cause of neonatal meningitis and sepsis but is an uncommon infection in adults. GBS arthritis is rare, and axial involvement with sacroiliitis is even more uncommon. Microbiological diagnosis frequently relies upon positive blood cultures as synovial fluid cultures are usually negative. Severe joint damage may result due to delay in the initiation of antibiotic treatment.

Streptococcus (S.) agalactiae colonizes in the female genitourinary and lower gastrointestinal tracts and is responsible for a wide range of infections in newborns, pregnant women and non-pregnant adults. Therefore, antibiotic prophylaxis and infection treatment against S. agalactiae is important. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of S. agalactiae antibiotic resistance in Iranian patients, especially among pregnant women. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and the Scientific Information Database (SID) databases by using related ke

Streptococcus agalactiae is an emerging pathogen in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) worldwide. To investigate aspects of the epidemiology, transmission and virulence of S. agalactiae infections, nine outbreaks of meningoencephalitis and septicemia in Nile tilapia farms in Brazil were analyzed. Records from the outbreaks revealed large variation in the weight of fish affected, high mortality, and disease occurrence at water temperatures above 26 degrees C. S. agalactiae was isolated from diseased fish from all farms, and 29 strains were identified by phenotypic tests and 16S rRNA gene sequ…

Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) is a well-known cause of early and late onset infections in neonates and very young infants. Recently attention has focused on the changing spectrum of invasive Group B Streptococcus (GBS) disease, including children beyond early infancy and non-pregnant adults. There is very little information available on invasive GBS infection especially meningitis in pediatric population older than three months of age. We report a case of uncomplicated meningitis due to GBS in a previously healthy 5-year-old boy. The literature on infection especially mening…

UNLABELLED: This study analysed the clinical and bacteriological patterns of paediatric bacteraemia in a university hospital, by a review of 213 episodes over a period of 7 y. Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most frequent aetiological agent after the neonatal period and Streptococcus agalactiae in neonatal sepsis. Almost half of pneumococci and meningococci were penicillin non-susceptible. Four neonatal deaths attributed to bacteraemia were recorded.
CONCLUSION: Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of community-acquired bacteraemia. Mortality due to bacteraemia in children without u…

Streptococcus enterococci group D is a rare cause of neonatal sepsis, and it is associated with significant morbidity and a very high fatality rate. The infection is usually acquired intra-partum, from the colonization of the maternal genital tract. Most affected neonates have an early-onset presentation of symptoms, usually within the first 48 hours after birth, which is similar to other causes of neonatal sepsis such as Streptococcus agalactiae or Escherichia coli. We describe an early preterm infant with a fatal, early-onset sepsis caused by Streptococcus D.
