Care models for professionals with substance use disorder (SUD), such as those for physicians, attorneys, military personnel and commercial pilots, currently do not have a standard method to determine whether to allow medication for addiction treatment (MAT) in profession-specific treatment plans. The decision to endorse the use of MAT involves a tradeoff between maximizing SUD relapse prevention and minimizing MAT-related adverse effects that might impact safety. We propose a decision analysis process to facilitate an objective and evidence-based use of MAT in these circumstances. Already imp

BACKGROUND: Pain catastrophizing, or the interpretation of pain as unbearable or intolerable, can increase pain-related anxiety and severity. High levels of pain catastrophizing have also been linked to substance use, particularly for substances with analgesic properties. Importantly, behavioral treatments can reduce pain catastrophizing, making them promising interventions for mitigating pain-related substance use. The aim of this scoping review is to summarize literature investigating the relationship between pain catastrophizing and substance use in adults.
METHODS: We performed a scoping

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed but are associated with significant risks, particularly when used long-term. The anxiolytic and hypnotic properties of these medications increase their risk of dependence, which can lead to nonmedical and illicit use. Illicit use further compounds these harms, particularly with the emergence of potent novel benzodiazepines on the unregulated market. While tapering remains the standard treatment, not all individuals seek discontinuation. In such cases, harm reduction becomes a key approach to minimise associated risks. This review aimed to ident

Substance use disorders are often associated with antisocial behaviour and criminality. Consequently, alcohol and drug use disorders are frequently noticed in prisoners and many of them require treatment in prison. Adequate management and therapy of affected individuals include diagnosis of substance use and comorbid disorders, management of withdrawal symptoms and implementation of follow-up therapy. However, there are no established specific treatment interventions in prison. For opioid use disorders, opioid maintenance treatment is the established first-line treatment, and its effectiveness

Drug addiction, a disorder characterized by chronic relapse and compulsive drug use, poses a significant threat to public safety and human health. Addictive substances can be categorized as natural, semi-synthetic, or synthetic based on their origin. Additionally, they can be classified into three groups according to their pharmacological targets: opioids, hallucinogens, and cannabinoids that act on G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs); alcohols, nicotine, ketamine, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines (BDZs) that affect ligand-gated ion channel-type receptors; and psychostimulants that interact w

Adolescence is a critical period for developing risk behaviors such as substance use, which can impact health in adulthood. Culturally adapted evidence-based programs (EBPs) are promising for prevention. This review explores the processes for culturally adapting EBPs targeting alcohol, tobacco, or cannabis use, and/or anxiety or depression in adolescents. We searched multiple databases, grey literature, and relevant websites for studies detailing the cultural adaptation process of EBPs. We then categorized common adaptation steps, classified adaptations using the cultural sensitivity model, id

Psychedelics, particularly psilocybin, have garnered significant attention as potential therapeutic tools for treating substance use disorders (SUDs), such as those related to alcohol, nicotine, heroin (an opioid), or cocaine. Traditional treatments often fall short, leading to high relapse rates and an urgent need for innovative approaches. This article explores the emerging role of psychedelics in SUDs therapy, highlighting their ability to disrupt maladaptive neural circuits, promote neuroplasticity, and facilitate profound psychological insights that address the root causes of SUDs. The health toll of child maltreatment or violence against children (VAC) has not yet been comprehensively evaluated. Here, in our systematic review and meta-analyses, we focused on the health impacts of physical violence, psychological violence and neglect during childhood. Utilizing the Burden of Proof methodology, which generates conservative measures of association while accounting for heterogeneity between input studies, we evaluated 35 associations between VAC and adverse health outcomes, identifying 27 statistically significant links. The associations between physical violence and major

Schizophrenia, a complex neuropsychiatric condition, manifests with severe neurobiological and psychosocial symptoms, including psychosis, cognitive dysfunction, and social withdrawal. Neuroscience links these symptoms to synaptic malfunctions and neurotransmitter dysregulation, leading to a profound disconnection from reality. The disorder significantly affects cognitive, affective, and behavioral functions, causing considerable neuropsychological distress and functional impairments. The interplay of schizophrenia with the criminal justice system is complex, often exacerbating psychiatric sti

Persons experiencing homelessness have higher rates of substance abuse, poorer overall health, and higher mortality from opioid overdose than the general population. Measuring progress throughout the addictions recovery process in these populations is challenging, given the multitude of factors that impact the recovery journey among persons experiencing homelessness. Despite these challenges, outcome assessment is essential for informing the continued improvement of recovery programs and validating effectiveness of evidence-based interventions. To better track and monitor progress throughout a

More than 60% of individuals recovering from substance use disorder relapse within one year. Some will resume drug consumption even after decades of abstinence. The cognitive and psychological mechanisms that lead to relapse are not completely understood, but stressful life experiences and external stimuli that are associated with past drug-taking are known to play a primary role. Stressors and cues elicit memories of drug-induced euphoria and the expectation of relief from current anxiety, igniting an intense craving to use again; positive experiences and supportive environments may mitigate

In this essay we want to foreground a question: what happens to 'addiction' when we take seriously cultural scripts informing its trajectories? Can this bring us to unthink addiction as problematic notion and move it onto new paradigms that fit better the now acknowledged fluidity and pluralistic episteme of 'addiction' and more broadly of chronic life conditions? Indeed, 'addiction' has become a pivotal concept in the contemporary world. A powerful diagnostic framework in interpreting human behaviour, for some 'addiction' has become the 'new normal' with chronic relations with different thing

Mental health disorders and substance use disorders (SUDs) in particular, contribute greatly to the global burden of disease. Psychedelics, including entactogens and dissociative substances, are currently being explored for the treatment of SUDs, yet with less empirical clinical evidence than for other mental health disorders, such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this narrative review, we discuss the current clinical research evidence, therapeutic potential and safety of psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), ketamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite high rates of relapse after treatment for drug use, to our knowledge there is no systematic literature identifying psychological factors that predict risk of relapse to drug use (excluding alcohol or tobacco). Our aim was to identify psychological factors that predict risk of relapse to drug use after enrollment in drug use treatment. The identification of such factors can support treatment planning and relapse prevention.
METHODS: We searched for peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2023 in PsycINFO, PsycArticles, Web of Science, and PubMed. The incl

In the current article, we examine mattering to others as a relational resource and discuss how feelings of not mattering are uniquely implicated in addiction and substance use. We describe the mattering construct and how it is conceptualized, and we comprehensively review existing evidence based primarily on research with adolescents that links feelings of not mattering with addictive tendencies in general, and specific tendencies (e.g., excessive drinking and drug use and excessive social media use). A central premise of this article is the need to take race and ethnicity into account when c

Drug checking services (DCS) enable individuals to voluntarily submit a small amount of a substance for analysis, providing information about the content of the substance along with tailored harm reduction support and advice. There is some evidence suggesting that DCS may lead to behaviour and system change, with impacts for people who use drugs, staff and services, and public health structures. The evidence base is still relatively nascent, however, and several evidence gaps persist. This paper reports on qualitative interviews with forty-three participants across three Scottish cities where
