Sunbathers' application of sunscreen is probably inadequate to obtain the sun protection factor assigned to the preparation.

The sun protection factor (SPF) is a ratio that estimates the protective efficacy of a sunscreen against sunburn. The generally accepted methods used to determine the SPF of a sunscreen require that the formulation be applied in a thickness of 1.5 mg/cm2 (Deutsches Institut für Normung) or 2 mg/cm2 (US Food and Drug Administration). The applied thickness of a sunscreen is important for the degree of photoprotection. Forty-two volunteers on a beach applied their own sunscreen all over the body. The amount of the applied sunscreen was on average 0.5 mg/cm2. This indicates that the labelled SPF i…

The influence of UVA and visible radiation on acute damage by short-wave UVR (lambda less than 320 nm).

The influence of UVA and visible radiation on the acute damage by short-wave ultraviolet radiation (UVR) (lambda less than 320 nm) was investigated in human volunteers, using delayed erythema and sunburn cell production as markers of injury. It was found that subsequent exposure to UVA + visible radiation produced a significant reduction of the threshold erythema dose by short-wave UVR, in a dose-dependent manner. Subsequent exposures to varying doses of UVA + visible radiation, as well as to visible light alone failed to influence sunburn cell production. It is concluded that there is a posit…

Changes in sun protection behaviours, sun exposure and shade availability among adults, children and adolescents in New South Wales, 2003-2016.

OBJECTIVE: To inform skin cancer prevention policies and campaigns, we investigated changes over time in sun protection behaviours, sunburn, sun exposure and shade availability in public spaces among people living in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, between 2003 and 2016. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from the NSW Population Health Survey collected in 2003, 2007, 2014 and 2016, which included approximately 15,000 respondents of all ages in each year. Logistic regression models were used to analyse overall changes over time and for different age, sex and sociodemographic groups. …

A Specific Melon Concentrate Exhibits Photoprotective Effects from Antioxidant Activity in Healthy Adults.

Skin is the largest body organ and the first barrier to exogenous threats. This organ is constantly exposed to external factors such as ultraviolet radiation, which induces many adverse effects including sunburn, depigmentation, photo aging, photo immune suppression, and even skin cancer. Antioxidants seem to be good candidates in order to reduce ultraviolet-mediated damages and to prevent the health consequences of ultraviolet exposure. The present investigation aims to further characterize the potential skin photoprotective effects of a food supplementation and a topical administration of a …

Radiation sources providing increased UVA/UVB ratios attenuate the apoptotic effects of the UVB waveband UVA-dose-dependently in hairless mouse skin.

UV radiation-induced epidermal apoptotic sunburn cells provide a mechanism for eliminating cells with irreparable DNA damage. The UVB (290-320 nm) waveband is mainly responsible, but the role of UVA (320-400 nm) is less clear, and possible waveband interactions have not been examined. Recent studies in mice reveal a protective role for UVA against UVB-induced inflammation and immunosuppression, mediated via cutaneous heme oxygenase (HO). As HO has antiapoptotic properties in other tissues, this study examines the effect of UVA/UVB waveband interaction on apoptosis in the Skh:hr-1 hairless mous…

Reliability and consistency of a validated sun exposure questionnaire in a population-based Danish sample.

An important feature of questionnaire validation is reliability. To be able to measure a given concept by questionnaire validly, the reliability needs to be high. The objectives of this study were to examine reliability of attitude and knowledge and behavioral consistency of sunburn in a developed questionnaire for monitoring and evaluating population sun-related behavior. Sun related behavior, attitude and knowledge was measured weekly by a questionnaire in the summer of 2013 among 664 Danes. Reliability was tested in a test-retest design. Consistency of behavioral information was tested simi…

Meta-analysis of risk factors for cutaneous melanoma: II. Sun exposure.

A systematic revision of the literature was conducted in order to undertake a comprehensive meta-analysis of all published observational studies on melanoma. An extensive analysis of the inconsistencies and variability in the estimates was performed to provide some clues about its Epidemiology. Following a systematic literature search, relative risks (RRs) for sun exposure were extracted from 57 studies published before September 2002. Intermittent sun exposure and sunburn history were shown to play considerable roles as risk factors for melanoma, whereas a high occupational sun exposure seeme…

Clothing as solar radiation protection.

The sun is essential for life. Yet, sunlight can also be a source of such deleterious effects as sunburn, and suntanning, as well as premalignant and malignant lesions. These may all occur in individuals with normal responses to sunlight. In addition, there exist a variety of 'abnormal' photosensitivity responses to sunlight that may result from either endogenous imbalances (e.g. the porphyrias) or from added exogenous factors (e.g. drug photosensitivity). The 'normal' responses to sunlight, by and large, are produced preferentially by UVB (290-320 nm), with minor contribution by UVA (320-400 …

Host risk factors for the development of multiple non-melanoma skin cancers.

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common cancer in the US, and having multiple lesions conveys substantial cost and morbidity for the individual involved. Although there are data available on risk factors for NMSC, there are currently few studies that identify specific risk factors for development of multiple NMSCs. We evaluated host risk factors for multiple NMSCs among men (Health Professionals Follow-up Study) and women (Nurses' Health Study). Compared with individuals with a single NMSC, having greater number of sunburns was a risk factor for developing ≥ 2 NMSCs [≥ 10 sunburns, …

Safe cyanoacetyl microcrystalline cellulose: A novel agent to attenuate UV radiation's inflammatory effects.

Sunlight's ultraviolet radiation is a major cause of both short-term (like sunburn) and long-term (like aging) skin damage. While traditional sunblocks use chemical filters (absorbing UV) or physical/mineral filters (reflecting UV) for prevention, researchers are exploring new topical agents with natural or synthetic ingredients for added protection. Building on our previous work with a safe, antibacterial biomass-derived material-cyanoacetyl microcrystalline cellulose (CAMCC)-this study investigated its ability to protect rat skin from UV induced inflammation. The results showed that the test…

A randomised population-based intervention to examine the effects of the ultraviolet index on tanning behaviour.

The aim of the following study was to examine the effects of the Ultraviolet (UV) Index and a personal ultraviolet radiation (UVR) intensity indicator on tanning behaviour compared with general, written information about sun protection. A population-based random sample in Sweden was randomly assigned to four groups receiving different information packages (n=3200). Questionnaires were sent before and after the summer of 2001. Positive attitudes towards sunbathing as well as tanning and sunburn frequencies decreased. Knowledge about UV radiation and the use of sun protection increased for all g…

Ultraviolet recall reaction after total body irradiation, etoposide, and methotrexate therapy.

Ultraviolet (UV) reactivation reactions are rare and can occur in areas of prior sunburn or UV light therapy after the administration of chemotherapy, antibiotics, and other medications. Reactions may occur within days, as described after methotrexate therapy, or may appear months later, as described with ampicillin. Such reactions have been variably termed "UV recall," "sunburn recall," "photo recall," and "photodermatitis reactivation," making classification difficult. We report a UV reactivation reaction in a patient with acute lymphocytic leukemia treated with total body irradiation, etopo…
