Kinetics, kinematics, and performance modeling of two arm swing techniques in the swimming kick-start.

This experimental study investigated the effect of two arm swing techniques on kinematic and kinetic variables during the swimming kick-start. Twelve elite male swimmers performed starts using forward and butterfly arm swing techniques. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected using a Kistler Performance Analysis System. Data were analyzed for variables calculated from ground reaction force (GRF) and block, above the water, and underwater performance. The results revealed that work, power, and most of the force parameters measured higher values for the butterfly arm swing technique (p < 0.05)…

Intra-Cyclic Variation of Velocity in Swimming: Association and Consistency Between the Most-Used Measurements.

Background and Objectives: Intra-cyclic variation in swimming velocity is one of the variables most commonly used to assess swimming performance, providing simple, straightforward information for coaches and swimmers. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to assess the consistency and association between the two most commonly used methods for calculating the intra-cyclic variation in velocity in swimming (coefficient of variation-dv1; and range: the difference between the maximum and minimum instantaneous velocities-dv2). Methods: Twenty-one young butterfly swimmers (11 males and 10 female…

Cell-body curvature reduces stall frequency to enhance Vibrio cholerae swimming and chemotaxis through hydrogels.

The swimming motility of the bacterial pathogen Vibrio cholerae is a virulence factor that aids in breaching the mucus layer. V. cholerae has a curved cell shape, and previous work demonstrated that loss of curvature decreases infectivity. Here, we investigate the mechanism by which curvature affects single-cell motility. We compared the chemotactic performance of wild-type curved cells and straight mutants. The two exhibit similar swimming properties in liquid and viscous solutions but differ significantly in mucus-mimicking hydrogels, where curved cells demonstrate an 86% increase in chemota…

Single-cell transcriptional profiling identifies the swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus in response to bacterial infection.

Crustaceans rely entirely on innate immunity, yet the cellular composition, functional specialization, and pathogen-induced remodeling of their immune system remain poorly resolved. Here, we generated a high-resolution single-cell transcriptomic atlas of hemocytes from the swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus following Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection using 10× Genomics scRNA-seq. Seven putatively distinct hemocyte clusters were identified, including granulocytes, semigranular hemocytes, prohemocytes, unresolved hemocytes, hyalinocyte-like hemocytes, biosynthetically active secretory hemocy…

Penguins maintain effort, despite reduced dive efficiency, with limited physiological response under increased swimming workload.

In highly variable marine habitat, it is key to understand how free-ranging animals cope with variation in the energy cost of locomotion. He … enguins did not increase their locomotor effort to compensate for the additional drag but decreased swimming speed while maintaining dynamic body acceleration (VeDBA, a proxy of energy expenditure) constant. Treated birds showed no evidence of increased physiological stress in terms of body condition, oxidative stress, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio and gluco …

The Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway regulates ovarian development in the swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus.

Wnt/β-catenin signalling regulates many physiological processes in organisms, including development and tissue homeostasis maintenance. Signal transduction in this pathway involves the regulation of its multiprotein complex, which targets β-catenin for proteasomal degradation. The genes encoding the cytoplasmic regulatory proteins β-catenin and GSK-3β in Portunus trituberculatus were successfully cloned and characterized here. Ptβ-catenin was most highly expressed in hemocytes, PtGSK-3β in ovarian tissue, and both genes were significantly upregulated at ovarian stage III, as revealed by quanti

The hydrodynamic performance of duck feet for submerged swimming resembles oars rather than delta-wings.

Waterfowl use webbed feet to swim underwater. It has been suggested that the triangular shape of the webbed foot functions as a lift-generating delta wing rather than a drag-generating oar. To test this idea, we studied the hydrodynamic characteristics of a diving duck's (Aythya nyroca) foot. The foot's time varying angles-of-attack (AoAs) during paddling were extracted from movies of ducks diving vertically in a water tank. Lift and drag coefficients of 3D-printed duck-foot models were measured as a function of AoA in a wind-tunnel; and the near-wake flow dynamics behind the foot model was ch

Reversal of diabetic-induced myopathy by swimming exercise in pregnant rats: a translational intervention study.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) plus rectus abdominis muscle (RAM) myopathy predicts long-term urinary incontinence (UI). Atrophic and stiff RAM are characteristics of diabetes-induced myopathy (DiM) in pregnant rats. This study aimed to determine whether swimming exercise (SE) has a therapeutic effect in mild hyperglycemic pregnant rats model. We hypothesized that SE training might help to reverse RAM DiM. Mild hyperglycemic pregnant rats model was obtained by a unique subcutaneous injection of 100 mg/kg streptozotocin (diabetic group) or citrate buffer (non-diabetic group) on the first d…

Comparative transcriptomics reveals the immune dynamics during the molting cycle of swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus.

Molting is one of the most important biological processes of crustacean species, and a number of molecular mechanisms facilitate this complex procedure. However, the understanding of the immune mechanisms underlying crustacean molting cycle remains very limited. This study performed transcriptome sequencing in hemolymph and hepatopancreas of the swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) during the four molting stages: post-molt (AB), inter-molt (C), pre-molt (D), and ecdysis (E). The results showed that there were 78,572 unigenes that were obtained in the hemolymph and hepatopancreas of P. trit…

Bio-Inspired Propulsion: Towards Understanding the Role of Pectoral Fin Kinematics in Manta-like Swimming.

Through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a model manta ray body, the hydrodynamic role of manta-like bioinspired flapping is investigated. The manta ray model motion is reconstructed from synchronized high-resolution videos of manta ray swimming. Rotation angles of the model skeletal joints are altered to scale the pitching and bending, resulting in eight models with different pectoral fin pitching and bending ratios. Simulations are performed using an in-house developed immersed boundary method-based numerical solver. Pectoral fin pitching ratio (PR) is found to have signific…
