Gastroprotections of escins Ia, Ib, IIa, and IIb on ethanol-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats.

Effects of escins Ia, Ib, IIa, and IIb isolated from horse chestnuts on ethanol-induced gastric mucosal lesions and the roles of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons, endogenous nitric oxide (NO), sulfhydryls, prostaglandins, as well as gastric secretion and the sympathetic nervous system, were investigated in rats. Test samples were given orally to fasted rats 1 h before ethanol (1.5 ml/rat, p.o.) treatment or ligation of the pylorus. Escins Ia-IIb (10-50 mg/kg) potently inhibited ethanol-induced gastric mucosal lesions, whereas desacylescins I and II (50 mg/kg) showed no such effect. These a…

β-adrenergic signaling triggers enteric glial reactivity and acute enteric gliosis during surgery.

BACKGROUND: Enteric glia contribute to the pathophysiology of various intestinal immune-driven diseases, such as postoperative ileus (POI), a motility disorder and common complication after abdominal surgery. Enteric gliosis of the intestinal muscularis externa (ME) has been identified as part of POI development. However, the glia-restricted responses and activation mechanisms are poorly understood. The sympathetic nervous system becomes rapidly activated by abdominal surgery. It modulates intestinal immunity, innervates all intestinal layers, and directly interfaces with enteric glia. We hypo…

Early changes of immunoreactivity to orexin in hypothalamus and to RFamide peptides in brainstem during the development of hypertension.

Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is an important function of the nervous system and essential for maintaining blood pressure levels in the physiological range. In hypertension, BRS is decreased both in man and animals. Although increased sympathetic activity is thought to be the main cause of decreased BRS, hence the development of hypertension, the BRS is regulated by both sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) nervous system. Here, we analyzed neuropeptide changes in the lateral hypothalamus (LH), which favours the SNS activity, as well as in PNS nuclei in the brainstem of spontaneously hyp

Overview of recent clinical trials in heart failure: what is the current standard of care?

Heart failure develops as a consequence of cardiac injury. As the heart begins to fail to meet the body's metabolic demands, the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS) and the sympathetic nervous system are activated. These interrelated systems act in concert to facilitate cardiac output and tissue perfusion. Though these neurohormonal systems are initially compensatory, evidence suggests that they promote deleterious cardiac remodeling and myocyte destruction. Recent studies in patients with heart failure have targeted the RAAS and sympathetic nervous system for therapeutic intervention.…

Causal interactions between the cerebral cortex and the autonomic nervous system.

Mental states such as stress and anxiety can cause heart disease. On the other hand, meditation can improve cardiac performance. In this study, the heart rate variability, directed transfer function and corrected conditional entropy were used to investigate the effects of mental tasks on cardiac performance, and the functional coupling between the cerebral cortex and the heart. When subjects tried to decrease their heart rate by volition, the sympathetic nervous system was inhibited and the heart rate decreased. When subjects tried to increase their heart rate by volition, the parasympathetic …

Potential role of the autonomic nervous system in the immunosuppressive effects of acute morphine administration.

These studies investigated the role of the autonomic nervous system in mediating the immunosuppressive effect of morphine on blood lymphocyte proliferation in rats. To determine the contribution of the autonomic nervous system, rats were pretreated with the ganglionic blocker chlorisondamine (5 mg/kg) prior to morphine (7 mg/kg) administration. Ganglionic blockade with chlorisondamine completely antagonized the inhibitory actions of morphine, suggesting that intact ganglionic transmission was required for the inhibition to occur. Blockade of postganglionic parasympathetic neurotransmission wit

Neural control of the circulation: how sex and age differences interact in humans.

The autonomic nervous system is a key regulator of the cardiovascular system. In this review, we focus on how sex and aging influence autonomic regulation of blood pressure in humans in an effort to understand general issues related to the cardiovascular system as a whole. Younger women generally have lower blood pressure and sympathetic activity than younger men. However, both sexes show marked interindividual variability across age groups with significant overlap seen. Additionally, while men across the lifespan show a clear relationship between markers of whole body sympathetic activity and

Organ-specific sympathetic innervation defines visceral functions.

The autonomic nervous system orchestrates the functions of the brain and body through the sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways1. However, our understanding of the autonomic system, especially the sympathetic system, at the cellular and molecular levels is severely limited. Here we show topological representations of individual visceral organs in the major abdominal sympathetic ganglion complex. Using multi-modal transcriptomic analyses, we identified molecularly distinct sympathetic populations in the coeliac-superior mesenteric ganglia (CG-SMG). Of note, individual CG-SMG populations exhi

[A status of the adaptational region of the autonomic nervous system in children with chronic gastroduodenitis living under ecologically unfavorable conditions].

The authors carry out the analysis of adaptation disorders of a link of vegetative of nervous system at children with chronic gastroduodenitis, living under poor ecological conditions. It is shown, that in these patients the power of vagus connections with vegetal nervous system prevails. In loading test, the inadequacy of adaptation comes to light. The accumulation of Mn and Cr in the blood serum is accompanied by high power of sympathetic connections with vegetal nervous system and accumulation of Ph in the blood serum--by high power of parasympathetic connections with vegetal nervous system

Electrophysiologic evaluation of the cardiac conduction system and its autonomic regulation in familial amyloid polyneuropathy.

A high incidence of cardiac conduction disturbances is a salient feature in familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) and amyloid infiltration of the conduction system has been found. In patients with FAP autonomic nervous dysfunction involving gastrointestinal, urogenital and cardiovascular systems has been described. However, the present study is the first to evaluate the results of autonomic tests and pharmacologic intervention in the autonomic nervous regulation of the cardiac conduction system during an invasive electrophysiologic study. Seven patients with FAP and severe disturbances of the

Sympathetic and parasympathetic subtypes of body-first Lewy body disease observed in postmortem tissue from prediagnostic individuals.

Recent studies suggest the existence of brain-first and body-first subtypes within the Lewy body disorder (LBD) spectrum, including Parkinson's disease. These studies primarily focused on α-synuclein propagation through the parasympathetic vagal and olfactory bulb routes, leaving the possibility of a sympathetic nervous system spreading route unexplored. In the present study, we analyzed two postmortem datasets, which included 173 and 129 cases positive for Lewy pathology. We observed a clear distinction between brain-first and body-first subtypes in early prediagnostic cases with mild Lewy pa…

Uropharmacology: VIII. Sympathomimetic agents.

Sympathomimetic drugs stimulate the receptors of the sympathetic nervous system. Although the bladder possesses sympathetic receptors, sympathomimetic drugs, in general, have little effect on bladder function. Their most useful clinical applications on the urinary tract are to increase or decrease bladder resistance.

Nervous system: part 3.

This article, which forms part of the life sciences series and is the last of three articles on the nervous system, explores the major divisions of the peripheral nervous system. Motor and sensory nerves will be described before a more detailed examination of the cranial and spinal nerves is provided. The autonomic nervous system will be explored, including the diverse roles of the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions. The role of spinal reflexes in maintaining homeostasis is identified. Motor neurone disease will be discussed briefly as an example of a disorder of the peripheral nervous

Neuraxial modulation for treatment of VT storm.

In the hyperadrenergic state of VT storm where shocks are psychologically and physiologically traumatizing, suppression of sympathetic outflow from the organ level of the heart up to higher braincenters plays a significant role in reducing the propensity for VT recurrence. The autonomic nervous system continuously receives input from the heart (afferent signaling), integrates them, and sends efferent signals to modify or maintain cardiac function and arrhythmogenesis. Spinal anesthesia with thoracic epidural infusion of bupivicaine and surgical removal of the sympathetic chain including the st

Are centrally acting imidazoline agents appropriate therapy for renovascular hypertension?

An increased role of the sympathetic nervous system has been suggested to be a major contributor to the chronic elevation of BP in renovascular hypertension. We assessed the effects of rilmenidine, a centrally acting antihypertensive imidazoline agent, on BP and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) in 2K1C renovascular hypertensive conscious rabbits. Rabbits were made hypertensive with a renal clip or were sham-operated and were studied 3 and 6 weeks later. Acute treatment with rilmenidine reduced BP to a greater extent in the hypertensive rabbits. Although rilmenidine reduced the heart rat…

Autonomic Nervous System Reactivity During Speech Repetition Tasks: Heart Rate Variability and Skin Conductance.

Cognitive and emotional challenges may elicit a physiological stress response that can include arousal of the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight response) and withdrawal of the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for recovery and rest). This article reviews studies that have used measures of electrodermal activity (skin conductance) and heart rate variability (HRV) to index sympathetic and parasympathetic activity during auditory tasks. In addition, the authors present results from a new study with normal-hearing listeners examining the effects of speaking rate on changes in s…

Heart rate recovery in migraine and tension-type headache.

OBJECTIVE: There are reports proposing that migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) may affect the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Abnormalities in both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system have been suggested in migraineurs. However, in TTH, reports on the ANS function are limited and only associated with sympathetic system. Techniques for evaluating parasympathetic activity are more limited when compared with sympathetic function. Hence, the aim of the study was to measure heart rate recovery (HRR), an index of vagal activity, in migraine, TTH, and control subjects. METHODS: Fort…

[Stress-induced hypertension and diabetes mellitus].

Hypertension and diabetes are the basic risk factors of atherosclerosis and its complications. At present new associations are sought which will enable us to describe more satisfactorily the mutual relationship of hypertension, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease. One of the systems involved in all substantial physiological processes is the autonomic nervous system. Stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system by chronic stress causes in addition to an elevated pulse rate and cardiac minute output also activation of another important pressor mechanism--the renin-angiotensin-aldoste…
