Taurine supplementation improves hippocampal metabolism in immature rats with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) through protecting neurons and reducing gliosis.

Taurine as an essential amino acid in the brain could play an important role in protecting the fetal brain of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). The hippocampus with IUGR showed neural metabolic disorder and structure changed that affected memory and learning ability. This study was aimed to identify the effect of taurine supplementation on the metabolism alterations and cellular composition changes of the hippocampus in IUGR immature rats. Metabolite concentrations were determined by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in the hippocampus of juvenile rats with IUGR following taurine sup…

Taurine-magnesium coordination compound, a potential anti-arrhythmic complex, improves aconitine-induced arrhythmias through regulation of multiple ion channels.

Taurine-magnesium coordination compound (TMCC) exhibits antiarrhythmic effects in cesium-chloride-and ouabain-induced arrhythmias; however, the mechanism underlying these effects on arrhythmia remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of TMCC on aconitine-induced arrhythmia in vivo and the electrophysiological effects of this compound in rat ventricular myocytes in vitro. Aconitine was used to induce arrhythmias in rats, and the dosages required to produce ventricular premature contraction (VPC), ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular fibrillation (VF), and cardiac arrest…

Tissue Taurine Depletion Induces Profibrotic Pattern of Gene Expression and Causes Aging-Related Cardiac Fibrosis in Heart in Mice.

Dietary taurine deficiency results in dilated cardiomyopathy in cats while in mice taurine deficiency produced by knocking out the taurine transporter (TauT) gene leads to a reduction in cardiac function with advancing age. The present study elucidated the involvement of cardiac fibrosis in the aging-dependent cardiac disorder of the TauT-knockout (TauTKO) mouse. Old (18-24-month-old) TauTKO mice, but not young (3-5-month-old) mice, exhibit cardiac fibrosis. Transcriptome microarray analysis revealed an increase in pro-fibrotic genes, such as S100A4, ACTA2 and CTGF, in both young and old TauTK…

Neuroprotective Effect of Taurine-Rich Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) Extract Against Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced Oxidative Stress in SH-SY5Y Cells.

Oxidative stress mediates the cell damage in several neurodegenerative diseases, some of which are Alzheimer's disease (AD), multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we investigated whether the taurine-rich cuttlefish extract could exert a protective effect on damaged human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Our results revealed that pre-treatment with cuttlefish extract effectively increased the cell viability by protecting the cells from intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by H2O2 exposure. Furthermore, apoptosis related pr…

Taurine-induced insulin signalling improvement of obese malnourished mice is associated with redox balance and protein phosphatases activity modulation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Obese protein malnourished mice display liver insulin resistance and taurine (TAU) seems to attenuate this effect. The association between early-life malnutrition and hepatic redox balance in diet-induced insulin resistance is unknown. We investigated TAU supplementation effects upon liver redox state and insulin signalling in obese protein malnourished mice. METHODS: Weaned male C57BL-6 mice were fed a control (14% protein - C) or a protein-restricted diet (6% protein - R) for 6 weeks. Afterwards, mice received a high-fat diet (34% fat - HFD) for 8 weeks (CH - RH). Half of…

Betaine or taurine administration prevents fibrosis and lipid peroxidation induced by rat liver by ethanol plus carbon tetrachloride intoxication.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of betaine or taurine on liver fibrogenesis and lipid peroxidation in rats. Fibrosis was induced by treatment of rats with drinking water containing 5% ethanol and CCl(4) (2 x weekly, 0.2 ml/kg, i.p.) for 4 weeks. Ethanol plus CCl(4) treatment caused increased lipid peroxidation and disturbed antioxidant system in the liver. Histopathological findings suggested that the development of liver fibrosis was prevented in rats treated with betaine or taurine (1% v/v in drinking water) together with ethanol plus CCl(4) for 4 weeks. When hepatic taur…

NIP- and NAP-taurine bind to external modifier site of AE1 (band 3), at which iodide inhibits anion exchange.

External iodide (I-o) inhibits AE1 (band 3)-mediated anion exchange in human red blood cells by binding to a noncompetitive inhibitory site, the external halide modifier site. External N-(4-azido-2-nitrophenyl)-2-aminoethyl sulfonate (NAP-taurine) and N-(4-isothiocyano-2-nitrophenyl)-2-aminoethyl sulfonate (NIP-taurine) also inhibit Cl- exchange noncompetitively. Increasing I-o decreases the inhibitory potency of NIP-taurine in a competitive fashion; this effect is not due to I- binding to the transport site, which has little effect on the NIP-taurine affinity. Bis(sulfosuccinimidyl)-suberate …

Polystyrene microplastics impact on cardiac and pulmonary physiology and microenvironment in a mouse model: Role of taurine supplementation and molecular docking insights.

Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) have recently gained attention as widespread environmental contaminants posing risks to both human and animal health. In this study, we investigated the potential protective effect of taurine (200 mg/kg b.wt) against cardiopulmonary toxicity induced by PS-MPs (10 mg/kg b.wt) in male Swiss mice following a 60-day oral exposure. Molecular docking investigation for both proteins and mRNA targets was carried out utilizing a global, flexible docking strategy that allowed for full ligand conformational freedom and binding surface exploration. We designed an experim…
