Adverse Childhood Experiences and Higher Levels of Stress Are Associated With the Co-occurrence of Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairment and Anxiety.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify subgroups of patients with distinct joint cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) AND anxiety profiles and evaluate for differences in demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as levels of global stress, cancer-specific stress, cumulative life stress, and resilience. DATA SOURCES: Patients (n = 1332) completed the Attentional Function Index and the Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory six times over two cycles of chemotherapy. Global, cancer-specific, and cumulative life stress and resilience were evaluated using Perceived Stress Scale, Impact of E

Effect of rivastigmine on mobility of patients with higher-level gait disorder: a pilot exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Higher-level gait disorder (HLGD) in older adults is characterized by postural instability, stepping dysrhythmicity, recurrent falls and progressive immobility. Cognitive impairments are frequently associated with HLGD. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare gait and cognitive performance before and after the use of rivastigmine in patients with HLGD, free from cognitive impairment or Parkinsonism. METHODS: Fifteen non-demented patients with HLGD (age 79.2 ± 5.9 years; 11 women; Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE] 28.3 ± 1.4) received escalating doses of rivastigmine f

Initial results, reliability, and validity of a mental health survey of Mount Pinatubo disaster victims.

This report presents the initial results of a mental health survey of 351 tribal and non-tribal Mount Pinatubo disaster victims 6 years after they were displaced following the volcanic eruption in the Philippines on June 12, 1991. Mental illness prevalence rates in both Filipino ethnic groups were comparable to those found in a U.S. study using the same assessment instrument. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD; 27.6%) and major depression (14.0%) were the two most frequent diagnoses. Diagnostic test-retest interviewer agreement was good for probable alcohol abuse (kappa = .65, agreement = 97

The Effect of Cerebrolysin on Anxiety, Depression, and Cognition in Moderate and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Patients: A CAPTAIN II Retrospective Trial Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Traumatic brain injuries represent an important source of disease burden requiring emergency inpatient care and continuous outpatient tailored rehabilitation. Although most TBIs are mild, patients are still developing post-TBI depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairments. Our secondary retrospective trial analysis aimed to (1) analyze correlations between HADS-Anxiety/HADS-Depression and scales that measure cognitive and motor processes in patients treated with Cerebrolysin compared to the placebo group and (2) compare anxiety and depression scores among the two tr

Panic disorder and social anxiety disorder subtypes in a caffeine challenge test.

Studies have demonstrated the vulnerability of anxiety disorder patients to challenge tests. Our aim was to observe if panic disorder (PD) patients and generalized social anxiety disorder (GSAD) and performance social anxiety disorder (PSAD) patients respond in a similar way to the induction of anxiety symptoms and panic attacks by an oral caffeine challenge test. We compared 28 PD patients, 25 GSAD patients, 19 PSAD, and 26 control subjects after a 480-mg caffeine test. The patients had not received psychotropic drugs for at least a 4-week period. In a randomized double-blind experiment perfo

Fatigue following COVID-19 infection is not associated with autonomic dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: The long-term clinical and physiological consequences of COVID-19 infection remain unclear. While fatigue has emerged as a common symptom following infection, little is known about its links with autonomic dysfunction. SARS-CoV-2 is known to infect endothelial cells in acute infection, resulting in autonomic dysfunction. Here we set out to test the hypothesis that this results in persistent autonomic dysfunction and is associated with post-COVID fatigue in convalescent patients. METHODS: We recruited 20 fatigued and 20 non-fatigued post-COVID patients (median age 44.5 years, 36/40

Salivary stress biomarkers and anxiety symptoms in children with and without temporomandibular disorders.

The etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which are considered as a heterogeneous group of psychophysiological disturbances, remains a controversial issue in clinical dentistry. This study aimed to evaluate whether the salivary alpha-amylase (sAA), cortisol levels, and anxiety symptoms differ between children with and without TMD. Initially, 316 young subjects were screened in public schools (nonreferred sample); 76 subjects aged 7-14 years were selected and comprised the TMD and control groups with 38 subjects each matched by sex, age, and the presence/absence of sleep bruxism. Health-Promoting Factors and Their Relationships with the Severity of Symptoms in Patients with Anxiety Disorders during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental disorders in the modern world. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the onset of many mental disorders in people who did not have them before. It can be suspected that in people who already had anxiety disorders before the pandemic, their quality of life has significantly deteriorated. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the relationships between life satisfaction, acceptance of illness, the severity of anxiety and depression symptoms and health behaviors in a group of patients diagnosed with anxiety disorders during the COVID-19

Do patients with skin allergies have higher levels of anxiety than patients with allergic respiratory diseases? Results of a large-scale cross-sectional study in a French population.

BACKGROUND: Psychological comorbidity is a known aspect of allergic disease. However, there is recent evidence that a large proportion of allergic patients remains undiagnosed and untreated for psychological disease. In addition, the complexities of the anxiety-allergy relationship, i.e. differences for current and past disease, or differences among allergic disease types, are not well understood. OBJECTIVES: To measure the level of anxiety in a large allergic population in France using a standardized measure, the State/Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). METHODS: Allergy patients in France (n =

A psychometric analysis of the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scales--parent version in a school sample.

The Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale-Parent Version (RCADS-P) is a parent-report questionnaire of youth anxiety and depression with scales corresponding to the DSM diagnoses of separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and major depressive disorder. The RCADS-P was recently developed and has previously demonstrated strong psychometric properties in a clinic-referred sample (Ebesutani et al., Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology 38, 249-260, 2010b). The present study examined the psychometric properties of

A dimensional approach to measuring anxiety for DSM-5.

In preparation for DSM-5's planned inclusion of dimensional assessments of psychopathology as a complement to traditional categorical diagnoses, we developed brief self-rated scales for anxiety disorders that are consistent in content and structure. In the present paper, we discuss the creation of the scales and examine their psychometric properties and clinical sensitivity. Phase One assessed psychometric properties of the initial versions of the scales in a large non-clinical sample (n = 702). Phase Two assessed the psychometric properties of revised versions of the scales, including test-re

A proprietary herbal extract of ashwagandha root for stress and anxiety in healthy adults: a randomized, double-blind, three-arm, placebo-controlled efficacy and safety study.

Stress and anxiety are interconnected, sharing both behavioural and neural foundations. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) helps reduce stress and anxiety. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a proprietary herbal extract of ashwagandha root (APB) in adult men and women with moderate stress and anxiety. This 8-week, randomized, double-blind, three-arm, placebo-controlled trial included 141 healthy men and women aged 18-65 years with stress and anxiety. Participants were randomized to receive either 300 mg of APB twice daily (n = 47), ashwagandha root extract (ARE, n = 47), or

Mini - social phobia inventory (mini-SPIN): psychometric properties and population based norms of the German version.

BACKGROUND: A short screening for social anxiety disorder is useful in clinical and epidemiological contexts. However, the German version of the short form of the Social Phobia Inventory (mini-SPIN) has not been evaluated yet. Therefore, our aim was to determine reliability, validity and population based norms of the German mini-SPIN. METHODS: The mini-SPIN was evaluated in a clinical (N = 1254) and in a representative community sample (N = 1274). Clinical diagnoses, the Patient Health Questionnaire depression (PHQ-9) and somatization modules (PHQ-15), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (

Assessment of psychotropic-like properties of a probiotic formulation (Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175) in rats and human subjects.

In a previous clinical study, a probiotic formulation (PF) consisting of Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 (PF) decreased stress-induced gastrointestinal discomfort. Emerging evidence of a role for gut microbiota on central nervous system functions therefore suggests that oral intake of probiotics may have beneficial consequences on mood and psychological distress. The aim of the present study was to investigate the anxiolytic-like activity of PF in rats, and its possible effects on anxiety, depression, stress and coping strategies in healthy human volunteers.
