Adaptive interventions to optimise the mobile phone-based smoking cessation support: study protocol for a sequential, multiple assignment, randomised trial (SMART).

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) is promising in developing personalised smoking cessation interventions. By using an adaptive trial design, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness of personalised mHealth intervention in increasing smoking cessation. METHODS: This study is a two-arm, parallel, accessor-blinded Sequential Multiple-Assignment Randomised Trial (SMART) that randomises 1200 daily cigarette smokers from 70 community sites at two timepoints. In the first phase, participants receive brief cessation advice plus referral assistance to smoking cessation services and are randomly allocat

A Smartphone App and Cloud-Based Consultation System for Burn Injury Emergency Care.

BACKGROUND: Each year more than 10 million people worldwide are burned severely enough to require medical attention, with clinical outcomes noticeably worse in resource poor settings. Expert clinical advice on acute injuries can play a determinant role and there is a need for novel approaches that allow for timely access to advice. We developed an interactive mobile phone application that enables transfer of both patient data and pictures of a wound from the point-of-care to a remote burns expert who, in turn, provides advice back. METHODS AND RESULTS: The application is an integrated clinica

Searching for the optimal measuring frequency in longitudinal studies -- an example utilizing short message service (SMS) to collect repeated measures among patients with low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Mobile technology has opened opportunities within health care and research to allow for frequent monitoring of patients. This has given rise to detailed longitudinal information and new insights concerning behaviour and development of conditions over time. Responding to frequent questionnaires delivered through mobile technology has also shown good compliance, far exceeding that of traditional paper questionnaires. However, to optimize compliance, the burden on the subjects should be kept at a minimum. In this study, the effect of using fewer data points compared to the full data s

Sleep health, messaging, headaches, and academic performance in high school students.

AIM: We tested for associations of bedtime, sleep duration, instant messaging, and chronic headaches with hypersomnolence and academic performance in a sample of high school students in New Jersey, USA. METHODS: Students were surveyed anonymously and asked to report their sleep and messaging habits, headache status, and overall grades. RESULTS: We found that greater hypersomnolence was associated with later bedtimes, shorter sleep durations, and the presence of chronic headaches, but not with messaging after lights out. Also, we found that academic performance was lower in students who messa

Nicotine Intervention and Communication for Empowering Reduction (NICER): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial among priority populations of people who smoke.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a leading cause of preventable death, disproportionately affecting people with low socioeconomic status (SES) and serious psychological distress (SPD). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed reducing nicotine levels in cigarettes and other combusted tobacco products to minimally addictive levels, a policy with significant public health potential. However, misperceptions about very low nicotine cigarettes (VLNCs), such as beliefs that they are less harmful or ineffective for quitting, may reduce policy effectiveness. While previous randomized controlled

Support at Our Fingertips: An Experimental Comparison of In-Person, Video, Voice and Text-Based Support.

Digital forms of communication afford users unprecedented access to supportive others during times of need. Yet there has been little experimental research that compares the nature and effectiveness of informal support provided through digital communication. In this lab-based experiment, 348 female young adults took part in a stressful task and were randomly assigned to receive support from a close female friend through (1) in-person communication, (2) video calling, (3) voice calling, (4) text messaging, or (5) a no-support control condition. In-person, video and voice communication resulted …

Comparing different forms of structured follow-up support in the treatment of multiple health risks for chronic disease: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Primary care clinics need effective, low-cost tools to screen for and address multiple health risks - and technology can provide important efficiencies. My Own Health Report (MOHR) is a web-based intervention with 3 core functions: (1) risk flagging; (2) goal-setting for patient-prioritized risks; and (3) providing resources. A prior randomized trial in primary care settings showed that MOHR was feasible and effective. However, we identified two key gaps: a need for a flexible menu of delivery options to adopt and sustain MOHR and a pragmatic way to provide structured follow-up. M
