Humans have dyed textiles and leather, colored food, and paint body parts using natural dyes throughout history. Natural dyes have suffered drastically due to recent socioeconomic changes and replacement with synthetic dye in the textile industry. Hence, it is urgent to study indigenous dye plants and dyeing craft in local communities to protect these resources' potential ecological, economic, and cultural values. In 11 Monpa villages of Mêdog County, South-east Tibet, China, we conducted field research to record the indigenous method of cloth dyeing using madder dye. An aqueous extract of the…

Sulfur Black 1 (SB1) is a widely used dye in the textile industry. Its dyeing process generates significant amounts of wastewater containing high-molecular-weight, refractory, and toxic organic pollutants, along with sulfate. This study proposed a novel sulfur-circular process integrating persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (AOP), microbial sulfate reduction, and gas stripping-adsorption to simultaneously remove SB1 and recover sodium sulfide (Na2S) from dyeing wastewater. In a 542-day trial, persulfate activation by zero-valent iron particles generated sulfate radicals (SO4•-) and hyd…

We report the case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with eight digital myxoid cysts (DMCs) involving the fingers of both hands. They developed within 12 months of the patient starting a job that involved pushing a garment into an embroidery mould, thus exerting a downward force on the fingertips. The pressure exerted from this force could have potentially damaged the joint synovial capsule, leading to rupture and loss of synovial gel, thus inducing myxoid cysts. This case suggests that DMCs may be related to occupation, and to our knowledge, this is only the second reported case of occupat

The study reports a questionnaire based survey on mill operators in a large market in Ibadan, Southwest Nigeria. One hundred and twenty respondents, 65 males and 55 females aged between 18 and 65 years were interviewed and noise measurements were done at various work stations. Health problems reported by these workers include headaches 73%, backache 53% and respiratory symptoms such as cough 37% rhinitis 63% and wheezing 13%. Thirty four respondents (28%) reported a difficulty in hearing mostly due to tinnitus. Four complained of deafness. Twenty-three (19%) had raised blood pressure of 140/90

Photooxidative decolorization of four textile dyestuffs, C.I. Acid Orange 7 (AO7), C.I. Acid Orange 8 (AO8), C.I. Acid Orange 52 (AO52) and C.I. Acid Blue 74 (AB74), by UV/H2O2 was investigated in a laboratory scale photoreactor equipped with a 15 W low pressure mercury vapour lamp. The decolorization of the dyes was found to follow pseudo-first-order kinetics, and hence the figure-of-merit electrical energy per order (E(Eo)) is appropriate for estimating the electrical energy efficiency. The E(Eo) values were found to depend on the concentration of H2O2, concentration and basic structure of t

One hundred seventeen viscose rayon workers exposed to carbon disulfide, and 66 workers who were not exposed to any toxic agent in the working environment, underwent an endocrinological examination that included determination of thyroxine, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, prolactin, and testosterone in serum by radioimmunoassay methods. In the viscose rayon factory, the working conditions had not changed subsequent to 1932. Personal monitoring performed in 17 jobs showed that carbon disulfide exposures varied from 4 to 112 mg/m3. A carbon disulfide cumulative exposure index w

A total of 129 workers exposed to carbon disulphide (CS2) and 81 non-exposed controls were asked about their current use of pharmaceuticals, using a self-administered questionnaire. In all, 31% of the exposed and 19.8% of the non-exposed used some medicine (P = 0.08). The average number of pharmaceuticals per subject amounted to 0.71 in the exposed vs. 0.36 in the non-exposed (P = 0.049). Predominant types of medicines used were analgesics (12.4% in the exposed vs. 8.6% in the non-exposed, P = 0.50) and sedatives/hypnotics (10.1% in the exposed vs. 4.9% in the non-exposed, P = 0.21). Measurements of carbon disulphide and hydrogen sulphide in a Belgian viscose rayon plant, using personal monitoring with charcoal tubes for carbon disulphide and impingers for hydrogen sulphide, showed considerable differences in the average exposure for the different jobs (3-147 mg m-3 for carbon disulphide and 0-9 mg m-3 for hydrogen sulphide). Air pollutants such as mercury and sulphuric acid, which have been reported in some other studies, were not present. The lead in blood concentration found in four plumbers ranged from 28 to 49 micrograms 100 ml-1. The implications of these findings fo

Respiratory histories and preshift and postshift spirometry were recorded for 90 cotton felt workers and 54 brick workers. Environmental monitoring included area sampling by vertical elutriator and cyclone and personal sampling for respirable dust by cyclone. The prevalence of mill fever and byssinosis was 31% and 5%, respectively, in the cotton workers. Significant dose-response effects were detected for both elutriator and cyclone dust measurements and change in forced expiratory volume at 1 s over the shift. A dose-response relationship was also found for the brick workers.

Little was known about mortality from byssinosis among American cotton mill workers until recent times. Between 1912 and 1919, the Labor Department published two detailed investigations of mortality by cause of death among cotton mill workers and other residents of several New England mill towns. Statistical tests reveal no significant difference in mortality rates from nontubercular respiratory diseases between cotton textile workers and other mill town residents. Even when ex-mill workers who may have died from mill-related respiratory ailments are added to work-related deaths and subtracted

Preprocessing cotton to prevent byssinosis. A fundamental approach of cleaning or deactivating cotton prior to manufacturing has long been advocated to prevent byssinosis, but no trial had been conducted to test the feasibility of such an approach. In the study described, it was possible to be directed by both biological observations and the results of manufacturing trials. An exposure chamber was built in a cotton te

Zuskin, E., and Valić, F. (1973).Thorax, 28, 579-583. Respiratory changes in two groups of flax workers with different exposure pattern. A high mean total concentration of flax particles (16·9 mg/m3), of which about 20% were of respirable size, caused a high prevalence of bysinosis (69·9%) in 55 non-smoking female workers exposed to biologically retted flax over an average period of 11 years. A significant mean FEV1·0 decrease over the first work shift after the weekend break was recorded in both byssinotics and non-byssinotics but was more pronounced in the former. The mean acute FEV1·0 reduc

Indigo, as a water-soluble non-azo colorant, is widely used in textile, food, pharmaceutical and other industrial fields. Currently, indigo is primarily synthesized by chemical methods, which causes environmental pollution, potential safety hazards, and other issues. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find a safer and greener synthetic method. In this study, a dual-enzyme cascade pathway was constructed with the tryptophan synthase (tryptophanase, EcTnaA) from Escherichia coli and flavin-dependent monooxygenase (flavin-dependent monooxygenase, MaFMO) from Methylophaga aminisulfidivorans to
