BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst is an endemic infectious disease. Various modalities have been provided to approach hydatosis. This article reports a 20-years-experience of a new minimally invasive technique for the management of solitary pulmonary hydatid cysts using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) with mini-thoracotomy.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent unilateral or bilateral single pulmonary hydatid cyst excision using VATS with mini-thoracotomy. All patients were managed by the same surgeon over the period from January 1996 till January 2015.

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy in small children has not been widely performed because of difficulties in single-lung ventilation and surgical technique. This study assessed the feasibility, outcomes, and risk factors for conversion to thoracotomy of thoracoscopic lobectomy in children.

We present a clinical case of severe aortic stenosis in a 73-year-old patient symptomatic for dispnoea class NYHA III-IV. At the physical examination the patient presented a single sternal metastasis of renal carcinoma involving the sternum. Oncological stability prompted us to perform aortic valve replacement. In order to avoid median sternotomy and its complications due to the presence of sternal metastasis we successfully performed aortic valve replacement through a right minithoracotomy.

When no banked blood is available for an emergency thoracotomy, the Cell Saver is an extremely useful machine. This device is also effective in treating progressive hemorrhagic shock and helpful when the rate of blood loss exceeds the supply available from the blood bank.

This report describes our experience in performing mitral valve replacement and tricuspid annuloplasty via a right mini-thoracotomy in a patient with tracheostomy. In order to avoid the aesthetic prejudice of median sternotomy in young children undergoing open heart surgery for isolated congenital heart disease, a right posterolateral thoracotomy was performed in 146 children aged 5 months to 14 years. In a 17-year-old female with dextrocardia and corrected transposition of the great arteries, whose VSD and PFO had been surgically closed through median sternotomy two years previously, the left-sided atrioventricular valve replacement was performed for its severe insufficiency. The left anterolateral thoracotomy was chosen to have good visual field and to prevent unnecessary dissection of the adhesion. The postoperative course was uneventful.

During the period between 1980 and 1985 the technique of pharyngo-oesophageal reconstruction with gastric pull up was used in 7 late-stage cases with carcinomas of the hypopharynx and cervical oesophagus.
