BACKGROUND: Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by pantothenate kinase (PANK2) gene mutations. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) typically shows the "eye-of-the-tiger" sign, i.e. bilateral pallidal T2 hypointensity with a small central region of T2-hyperintensity.
AIMS: To describe clinical and MRI findings of a boy with early-onset neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation due to PANK2 mutation.

Liquid chromatographic methods are presented for the quantitative and confirmatory determination of malachite green (MG) and leucomalachite green (LMG) for channel catfish, rainbow trout, tilapia, basa, Atlantic salmon, and tiger shrimp. Residues were extracted from tissues with ammonium acetate buffer and acetonitrile and isolated by partitioning into dichloromethane. The three-dimensional structures of the class II anticoagulant phospholipase A2 (PLA2) toxin RVV-VD from the venom of Russell's viper, Vipera russelli russelli, and the class I neurotoxic PLA2 Notechis II-5 from the, Australian tiger snake, Notechis scutatus scutatus, were determined to 2.2 A and 3.0 A resolution, respectively. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, localized to the lentiform nucleus, was carried out in nine patients with a clinical diagnosis of Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome (SRO) and in eight healthy age-matched controls. We propose that a C-type lectin receptor, SIGNR-1 (also called Cd209b), helps to condition dendritic cells (DCs) in the gastrointestinal lamina propria (LPDCs) for the induction of oral tolerance in a model of food-induced anaphylaxis. Oral delivery of BSA bearing 51 molecules of mannoside (Man(51)-BSA) substantially reduced the BSA-induced anaphylactic response.
