Encoding actions and verbs: Tracking the time-course of relational encoding during message and sentence formulation.

Two experiments tracked the encoding of relational information (actions at the level of the prelinguistic message and verbs at the level of the sentence) during formulation of transitive event descriptions (e.g., The tiger is scratching the photographer). At what point during message and sentence formulation do speakers encode actions and verbs? Participants described pictures of transitive events in response to neutral questions ("What is happening?"), agent questions ("What is [the agent] doing?"), and patient questions ("What is happening with [the patient]?"). The agent and patient questio

Hearing in time: evoked potential studies of temporal processing.

This article reviews the temporal aspects of human hearing as measured using the auditory evoked potentials. Interaural timing cues are essential to the detection and localization of sound sources. The temporal envelope of a sound--how it changes in amplitude over time--is crucially important for speech perception. Time is taken to integrate, identify, and dissolve auditory streams. These temporal aspects of human hearing can be examined using the auditory evoked potentials, which measure the millisecond-by-millisecond activity of populations of neurons as they form an auditory percept. No Colavita effect: increasing temporal load maintains equal auditory and visual processing in people with one eye.

We investigate whether the loss of one eye leads to enhanced multisensory processing. Previously, we measured discrimination of auditory, visual and audiovisual targets in people with one eye compared to controls viewing binocularly or with one eye patched. Both control groups demonstrated typical visual dominance (the Colavita effect) whereas people with one eye show no Colavita effect, and instead show equal preference for visual and auditory stimuli. Here, we loaded temporal processing in an attempt to favour audition and thereby reverse Colavita visual dominance with a modified repetition

Cognitive processes involved in smooth pursuit eye movements.

Ocular pursuit movements allow moving objects to be tracked with a combination of smooth movements and saccades. The principal objective is to maintain smooth eye velocity close to object velocity, thus minimising retinal image motion and maintaining acuity. Saccadic movements serve to realign the image if it falls outside the fovea, the area of highest acuity. Pursuit movements are often portrayed as voluntary but their basis lies in processes that sense retinal motion and can induce eye movements without active participation. The factor distinguishing pursuit from such reflexive movements is

Contrast sensitivity in dyslexia.

Contrast sensitivity was determined for dyslexic and normal readers. When testing with temporally ramped (i.e. stimuli with gradual temporal onsets and offsets) gratings of 0.6, 4.0, and 12.0 cycles/deg, we found no difference in contrast sensitivity between dyslexic readers and controls. Using 12.0 cycles/deg gratings with transient (i.e. abrupt) onsets and offsets, we found that dyslexic individuals had, compared to controls, markedly inferior contrast sensitivity at the shortest stimulus durations (i.e. 17, 34, and 102 ms). This deficit may reflect more sluggish temporal summation. There wa

Perceptual consequences of a temporal processing deficit in reading disabled children.

Recent research suggests that some children who are reading disabled exhibit sensory deficits associated with poor temporal processing. The performance of disabled readers on various perceptual tasks is consistent with a temporal processing deficit hypothesis. Visual masking paradigms were utilized to obtain direct measures of the temporal aspects of processing in normal and disabled readers, and showed that the visual processing of disabled readers is characterized by a longer integration time and a slower processing rate for both simple and word-like stimuli. Image blurring, which reduces th

Spatio-temporal processing in multiple sclerosis.

The processing of spatial and temporal detail was investigated in patients with multiple sclerosis. Normal observers and 13 patients with optic neuritis secondary to multiple sclerosis performed a battery of visual tests that included contrast sensitivity, temporal integration, evoked potentials, and visual masking. The multiple sclerosis patients exhibited losses of pattern processing, and these deficits became more noticeable when the patterns were presented briefly. Moreover, these patients exhibited diverse response patterns for the different visual tests. For some, temporal integration fu

Changes in judgment of duration with different patterns of auditory information for individuals confined to bed.

A theoretical proposition that changes in the organization and structure of auditory information result in changes in temporal experience was tested in this study. Changes were measured in the judgment of duration of a 40-second interval that occurred in three different patterns of auditory information among individuals confined to bed. The sample consisted of 90 men and 90 women aged 18 to 35 years who had no known physical or mental health problems. Subjects rested in bed in a comfortable room for two and one-half hours. Each subject received one of three forms of auditory information-called

Decoupling what, how, and when for observing decision-making context in autonomous robots.

This paper presents an approach that decouples what to observe, how to observe it, and when observations are required for decision-making in autonomous robots. Situation awareness is essential for efficient and reliable autonomous robot operation, but despite advances toward parallelizing perception and action, key challenges remain in making perception aware of the current context and ensuring observability during action execution. To address this, we explicitly model the decision-making context and identify it with dedicated observers running in parallel to the task execution. Observer behav

Assessing the Stiffness Perception of Acupressure Massage Beginning Learners: A Pilot Study.

Visually impaired licensed therapists must have the ability to perceive stiffness through their fingertips in the school for the blind. The teachers strive to provide careful introductory education based on a quantitative assessment of new students' basic stiffness perception. However, assessment materials to help teachers understand new students' stiffness perception are lacking. This study aimed to develop suitable fundamental assessment materials that visually impaired licensed teachers could use to quantitatively assess the difference in the stiffness perception ability of beginning learne

Visual Imagery and Perception Share Neural Representations in the Alpha Frequency Band.

To behave adaptively with sufficient flexibility, biological organisms must cognize beyond immediate reaction to a physically present stimulus. For this, humans use visual mental imagery [1, 2], the ability to conjure up a vivid internal experience from memory that stands in for the percept of the stimulus. Visually imagined contents subjectively mimic perceived contents, suggesting that imagery and perception share common neural mechanisms. Using multivariate pattern analysis on human electroencephalography (EEG) data, we compared the oscillatory time courses of mental imagery and perception

The development and validation of a hazard perception test for use in driver licensing.

Drivers' hazard perception is the ability to identify dangerous situations on the road ahead. We detail the development and validation of a new computer-based hazard perception test to be used for driver licensing purposes in Queensland, Australia. We proposed five principles of effective hazard perception test creation, which we used to guide development of the test. In Study 1, the video-based instructions for the test were found to be intelligible to non-native English-speakers with an effective English reading age of 10 years. In Study 2, experienced drivers were found to be faster at resp

No Gender Differences in Pain Perception and Medication after Lumbar Spine Sequestrectomy-A Reanalysis of a Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Gender issues have received increasing attention in clinical research of the past years, and biological sex has been introduced as a moderating variable in experimental pain perception. However, in clinical studies of acute pain and gender, there are conflicting results. In particular, there are limited data on the impact of gender differences after spinal sequestrectomy. The aim of this work is to examine gender differences in postoperative pain and pain medication consumption in an inpatient clinical setting. METHODS: Data of a completed double-blind RCT was subdivided by gender

Effects of visual thermal cues on thermal perception and thermoregulation while cycling in virtual reality.

Thermal perception and regulation are essential for physical exercise. The hue-heat hypothesis suggests that an environment's color temperature, e.g., warm reddish lighting or cold bluish lighting, affects thermal perception and regulation. Virtual reality (VR) enables immersion in any environment. Previous work showed that a VR environment can affect how warm or cold users feel during sedentary VR experiences. However, it is unclear whether such visual thermal cues also influence physiological and perceptual responses during physical exercise. Therefore, we conducted a controlled VR experimen

Processing of auditory feedback in perisylvian and insular cortex.

When we speak, we not only make movements with our mouth, lips, and tongue, but we also hear the sound of our own voice. Thus, speech production in the brain involves not only controlling the movements we make, but also auditory and sensory feedback. Auditory responses are typically suppressed during speech production compared to perception, but how this manifests across space and time is unclear. Here we recorded intracranial EEG in seventeen pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients with medication-resistant epilepsy who performed a reading/listening task to investigate how other auditory re

Impaired perception of illusory contours and cortical hypometabolism in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Neuroimaging evidence suggests that areas of the higher-order visual cortex, including the lateral occipital complex (LOC), are engaged in the perception of illusory contours; however, these findings remain unsubstantiated by human lesion data. Therefore, we assessed the presentation time necessary to perceive two types of illusory contours formed by Kanizsa figures or aligned line ends in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Additionally, we used 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) to measure regional cerebral glucose metabolism in PD patients. Although there were

No Evidence That Hormonal Contraceptives Affect Chemosensory Perception.

The use of oral contraceptives (OC) in the form of a hormonal pill has been widespread for decades. Despite its popularity and long-time use, there is still much ambiguity and anecdotal reports about a range of potential side effects. Here, we addressed the potential effect of OC use on chemosensory perception. Previous research has almost exclusively focused on olfaction, but we expanded this to the trigeminal system and the sense of taste. We used Bayesian statistics to compare the olfactory, trigeminal, and taste detection abilities between a group of 34 normal cycling women and a group of
