The most common type of the disease was tinea capitis (10.8%) followed by tinea corporis (5.8%). The dermatophytes identified included Trichophyton mentagrophytes (19.4%). T. tonsurans (12.3%), Microsporum audoninii (7.7%) and M. gypseum (2%). All the isolates grew well at both 25 degrees C and 37 degr …

Because of impaired host defenses and a favorable environment at specific anatomic sites, there is an increased prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis, mucosal and cutaneous candidiasis, tinea pedis, and onychomycosis in the geriatric population compared with other age groups. Both KOH and fungal culture are timely, convenient, and cost-effective methods of diagnosis. Sensitivity of these tests depends on proper technique for specimen collection and experience. KOH 20% with DMSO and DTM are highly recommended. Treatment should be tailored to the diagnosis and the individual patient. This includes

During a period of 8 years 300 cases of dermatophytoses involving both hairy areas and the glabrous skin were found to be caused by M. canis. There was scalp involvement in 60%, including 8 infants and 27 adults; most of the adults presented Kerion-like lesions and presented various clinical aspects such as seborrhea capitis, folliculitis and discoid lupus erythematosus. In the 21 patients showing invasion of the beard the clinical manifestations included superficial erythemato-squamous patches with hyperemic slightly elevated margins, folliculitis or abscess-like lesions and Kerion-like lesio

Black dot ringworm (BDR), caused by Trichophyton violaceum var. glabrum (T. glabrum), was observed in a 28-year-old Japanese female who had been treated with prednisolone (22.5 mg/day) for systemic lupus erythematosus. It was successfully treated with oral terbinafine (125 mg/day) for 12 weeks. The causative fungus was identified by molecular analysis as well as morphological and biochemical examination. The chitin synthase 1 (CHS1) gene cleavage pattern of the clinical isolate with restricted enzyme HinfI was identical to that of T. violaceum. We reviewed previous reports of BDR to determine

The occurrence of three causative organisms of the so called intertriginous dermatophytoses--Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale and T. rubrum--was compared according to the localization of the lesions. The differentiation of invasion into solitary and combined sites showed a prevalence of E. floccosum in solitary lesions and T. rubrum in combined lesions. In T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale, the frequency of occurrence of both types of the lesions was approximately the same. The differences found suggest various adaptation-ability of dermatophytes to d

Commonly occurring diagnoses were tinea capitis (62; 54.9%), alopecia areata (43; 38.1%), psoriasis (5; 4.4%), and telogen effluvium (3; 2.7%). Seventeen patients with alopecia areata had atopic dermatitis and three had vitiligo.
CONCLUSION: Commonly occurring hair loss in children in our region …

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis (TC) is a fungal scalp infection. In 2024, a sudden increase in TC cases caused by Trichophyton (T.) tonsurans was observed among young men in Copenhagen, Denmark. Most of the affected individuals had recently received haircuts with electric hair clippers at hair salons prior to symptom onset. We hypothesized that electric hair clippers could be a source of infection spread.
OBJECTIVES: The study objective was to investigate whether anthropophilic dermatophytes could be found in electric hair clippers from hair salons.
METHODS: Hair salons were randomly selected fro…

Kerion Celsi is an inflammatory, deep fungal infection of the scalp. It is rare in neonates but gets more common in children about 3 years and older. It represents with swelling, boggy lesions, pain, alopecia and purulent secretions. Secondary bacterial infection is not unusual after maceration. Extracutaneous manifestations include regional lymphadenopathy, fever and very rare fungemia. Id-reactions can occur. Diagnosis is based on clinical suspicion, clinical examination and medical history. Diagnosis should be confirmed by microscopy, fungal culture and molecular procedures. The most common

BACKGROUND: Deep dermatophytosis of genital skin is a rare clinical manifestation of infection by a common group of pathogens.
OBJECTIVE: We emphasize the importance of clinical suspicion and the use of accurate diagnostic methods in the evaluation of deep dermatophytosis.
METHODS: We report a single case of tinea pubis, kerion type, caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes in an immunocompetent host.
RESULTS: A 54-year-old female presented with a suppurative infection of the vulva and pubis that was unresponsive to empirical antibiotic therapy. T. mentagrophytes was isolated. Oral itraconazol

A 74-year-old woman visited a clinic in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture in December 2002 complaining of itching, scale and alopecia. She had been diagnosed as having tinea capitis by a direct microscopic examination of scales, and been treated with an antifungal cream and steroid lotion since 1999. The bald area spread from frontal to occipital in which multiple black dots and red papules were scattered. Abundant endothrix spores were observed in the hair shaft. A mycelial colony was isolated from the black dots. A giant colony on Sabouraud's agar was white, powdery and flattened with cottony eleva…

Dermatophytosis represents one of the common fungal diseases that attack the skin, hair and nail of human beings worldwide. It causes chroni … lowed by Microsporum 22 (26.6%). Intervention measures to tackle dermatophytosis should emphasis on tinea capitis among 6-10 years old children with history of recent migration by raising awareness of communities through health extension programs.

We present the first case report of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis due to Gibellulopsis nigrescens, with the same pathogen detected in her caregiver's tinea capitis. This confirms that touch contamination from the caregiver's infection was the primary source of this rare organism. The species of pathogen causing peritonitis and her caregiver's scalp lesions were identified by DNA barcoding. The patient responded well to timely PD catheter removal and a 2-week course of systemic amphotericin B deoxycholate. Preventive strategies should prioritize hygiene practices, including ma…

Oral-facial-digital syndrome type 1 (OFD1) is an X-linked dominant development disorder due to mutations in the OFD1 gene. It is characterized by facial, oral, and digital malformations, although expression is variable. Skin manifestations are frequent (20%-30% of patients) and characterized by evanescent milia and patchy alopecia. Trichoscopic findings (broken hairs, black dots, pili torti) can resemble tinea capitis, although such findings have not been well characterized. High clinical suspicion of ectodermal dysplasia-like syndromes due to trichoscopy findings, absence of response to long-…

Dermatomycoses are one of the most common dermatological infectious diseases. Dermatophytoses, such as tinea pedis (athlete's foot) in adults and tinea capitis in children, are the most prevalent fungal diseases caused by dermatophytes. The transmission of anthropophilic dermatophytoses occurs almost exclusively through indirect contact with patient-contaminated belongings or environments and, subsequently, facilitates the spread of the infection to others. Hygienic measures were demonstrated to have an important role in removing or reducing the fungal burden. Herein, we evaluated the effectiv…
