BACKGROUND: As the number of donation after circulatory death (DCD) liver transplants (LTs) performed in the United States continues to increase annually, there has been interest by policy makers to develop a more robust exception point safety net for patients who develop ischemic cholangiopathy (IC) following DCD LT. As such, there is a need for better understanding of the clinical course and long-term outcomes in patients who develop IC, as well as determining if IC can be classified into distinct categories with distinctly different clinical outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling plays an important role in various cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We aimed to evaluate immunoexpression of EGFR in HCC and surrounding non-tumor liver tissue and to correlate it to multiple clinicopathologic data.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed 60 patients with HCC for multiple clinicopathologic characteristics and survival. Presence of the immunosignal and the percentage of positive tumor cells at the whole tumor tissue sample and adjacent cirrhotic liver tissue were semi-quantitatively determined.

Factors influencing survival were reviewed in 464 patients with recurrent breast cancer. Site of first recurrence and rate of tumor progression governed prognosis more than choice of initial therapy. Overall median survival was 22--26 months for bone/soft-tissue disease, 10--12 months for pleura/lung, and 4--6 months for liver/brain recurrence. This review describes to date the experience with combined heart-kidney transplant (HNTx) from a single donor. HNTxs are very uncommon relative to single-organ transplants of the heart and kidney, as well as combined kidney-pancreas and combined kidney-liver transplants. Two groups of patients seem to be candidates for HNTx: 1) those with end-stage heart disease and fixed (nonreversible) renal disease, and 2) those with end-stage renal disease and severe cardiac disease unamenable to other treatment. We compared outcome after pancreas and liver transplantation when both organs were retrieved from the same donor to outcome when only one or the other organ was retrieved. A total of 166 cadaver pancreata were transplanted at our institution between November 1984 and August 1989; 64 were obtained from donors in whom the liver was also donated (LD), and 102 were retrieved from non-liver donors (non-LD).
