Removal of a severely impacted mandibular third molar minimizing the risks of compromised periodontium, nerve injury, and mandibular fracture.

UNLABELLED: A technique is presented for severely impacted and dentigerous-cyst-related mandibular third molar removal, avoiding any associated risks. CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy patient complained about unpleasant smell and taste in the mouth and unilateral extraoral palpation of a protuberance, at the right corner of the mandible. Restricted field CBCT showed a severely impacted third molar, which penetrated the inferior cortical bone of the mandibular corner and was associated with a dentigerous cyst that had resorbed considerable bone in the region. Surgical exposure of the impacted toot

Evaluation of the fracture resistance of premolars with extensive and medium cavity preparations restored with direct restoring systems.

CONTEXT: Studies have been conducted to measure the fracture resistance of restored teeth with the current restorative materials. However, most of those studies disregard the cavity size as an influencing variable. AIMS: To evaluate the fracture resistance of prepared and restored maxillary premolars with medium and large preparations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy superior and sound premolars were randomly divided: G1 (control) - sound tooth; G2, G3, and G4 received a Class II mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) preparation with an occlusal box width 1/3 of the intercuspal distance, and were rest

Bruxism and its effect on the natural teeth.

Bruxism is one of the most prevalent, complex, and destructive dental functional disorders. It is difficult to identify, especially in its early stages, because most patients are unaware of the habit. Although many factors contribute to the etiology of the disorder, there is little valid and reliable clinical research to assure a correct diagnosis. The effects of bruxism are multiple and diverse and include temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction, head and neck pain, tooth wear, mobility, erosion, abrasion, loss of and damage to supporting structures, muscle pain and spasm, disturbance of

Thrombocytopenia-Absent Radius (TAR): Case report of dental implant and surgical treatment.

Thrombocytopenia-absent radius (TAR) syndrome is a congenital malformation in which affected individuals present reductions in the number of platelets, hypoplasia, or absence of radial bone unilaterally or bilaterally. Hematologic, skeletal, cardiac (particularly tetralogy of Fallot and septal-atrial defects), and gastrointestinal anomalies are most commonly associated with TAR syndrome. Skeletal changes result in a higher risk of dental and craniofacial trauma in patients with the syndrome. Thus, it is important for the dentist to be aware of the characteristics of TAR syndrome and its clinic

[Sequelae of zygomatic-orbito-maxillary fractures. Report of 70 cases and review of literature].

Fractures of the zygomatic-orbito-maxillary complex (ZOM) are among the most frequent in maxillo-facial surgery. The study evaluates treatment for this type of fracture in the long-term and the sequelae linked to it. Patients who had been operated between february 1998 and november 1999 to reduce and retain ZOM fractures were subjected to check-up examination at the Maxillo-Facial Surgery Operative Unit, Florence. Cases selected had been operated via trans-oral access with incision of the superior vestibular fornix and where necessary with application of means of retention (Foley balloon and/o

Interdental wiring in jaw fractures: effects on teeth and surrounding tissues after a one-year follow-up.

Several authors have suggested that interdental wiring may have an adverse effect on the teeth and surrounding tissues. In the present study we examined 250 teeth that had been subjected to wiring and 142 adjacent teeth that had not been wired (controls). During the wiring period, and after a minimum of 1 year following treatment of the jaw fracture, the teeth and periodontal tissues were examined by periodontal probing, percussion sound test, mobility test, sensitivity test, and radiography. One tooth showed temporary increased mobility. Periodontal health was clinically and radiologically fu

Strontium Ranelate Inhibits Osteoclastogenesis through NF-κB-Pathway-Dependent Autophagy.

Strontium ranelate (SR) is a pharmaceutical agent used for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and fragility fracture. However, little attention has been paid to the effect of SR on alveolar bone remodeling during orthodontic tooth movement and its underlying mechanism. Here, we investigated the influence of SR on orthodontic tooth movement and tooth resorption in Sprague-Dawley rats and the relationship between the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway, autophagy, and osteoclastogenesis after the administration of SR in vitro and in vivo. In this study, it was found that SR reduced

Digital Workflow Using A Free 3-D Mesh Modeling Software as a Tool in the Treatment of a Pediatric Mandibular Fracture.

The treatment of pediatric mandibular fractures is challenging due to the risk of injury to tooth germs and the potential of facial development disturbances. These cases require precise reduction and fixation to minimize such risks, while also promoting return to function. Long-term follow-up is of utmost importance, once the removal of osteosynthesis material due to plate migration might be required. Virtual surgical planning associated with 3-D printing optimizes functional and aesthetic outcomes, while reducing surgical time and intraoperative complications. This study aimed to describe the
