Influence of passive ultrasonic irrigation cycles on the penetration depth of sodium hypochlorite into root dentin.

This study explores innovative passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) parameters by investigating a novel, shorter, and more repetitive agitation cycle to enhance the penetration depth of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) within dentinal tubules. Forty extracted human mandibular premolars were prepared (size 40, 0.06 taper) and stained with 0.5% crystal violet. Samples were divided into four irrigation groups: (I) Conventional Needle Irrigation (CNI), (II) PUI with 2 cycles of 30 s each, (III) PUI with 3 cycles of 20 s each, and (IV) PUI with 6 cycles of 10 s each. Coronal, middle, and apical sections

Do cell phones affect establishing electronic working length?

INTRODUCTION: Patients often keep their cell phones on and nearby during root canal therapy. Cell phones release electromagnetic interference, which might disturb electronic working length measurements. The purpose of this ex vivo study was to determine the effect of a cell phone (Apple iPhone 5 [Apple, Cupertino, CA] or KP100 [LG, Seoul, Korea]) placed into direct contact with an electronic apex locator (EAL) (Dentaport Root ZX module [J Morita Corp, Tokyo, Japan] or Propex II [Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland]) on working length determination. METHODS: Twenty-six human premolars

[Clinical controlled study on the treatment of deep carious lesions in deciduous molars].

Compared with a step-by-step procedure, the one-step excavation of deep carious lesions in primary molars proved to be the treatment of choice in a clinically, microbiologically and histologically controlled trial. The stepwise method failed to produce any significant reduction in pulp exposure. Sensitivity assessment and percussion findings did not result in a reliable and unambiguous evaluation of treatment success. Histology showed inflammation-free pulps in 67% of the deciduous molars irrespective of the treatment method used. Microbiological examination revealed slightly softened dentin t

Fracture load and failure patterns of zirconia and 3D-printed resin endocrowns: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Endodontically treated teeth are more prone to fracture and often require durable restorative solutions. Endocrowns offer a conservative alternative to conventional post-and-core systems. This in vitro study compared the fracture load and failure behavior of milled zirconia and 3D-printed resin endocrowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen extracted human molars were endodontically treated and standardized, then prepared for endocrown restorations using a uniform design (two mm occlusal reduction with a four mm intracoronal extension). Specimens were randomly assigned to receive eit

Case Report: Sticky bone-assisted autogenous tooth transplantation for compromised alveolar recipient sites: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Autogenous tooth transplantation is one of the treatment options for replacing missing or non-restorable teeth in appropriately selected patients, depending on patient-related factors, donor-tooth availability, and recipient-site conditions. Sticky bone was prepared by combining particulate deproteinized bovine bone mineral with autologous fibrin glue and was applied to the recipient-site osseous defects at the time of transplantation. We report a case series of autogenous tooth transplantation using sticky bone-assisted recipient-site management in four complex scenarios. CASE PR

Root Canal Treatment of a Geminated Maxillary Second Molar with C-shaped Canal System: A Case Report.

Gemination is a rare phenomenon in the maxillary posterior teeth. Endodontic treatment of these teeth requires special care due to the bizarre anatomy particularly when it is accompanied by a C-shaped canal system. This report illustrates a patient with a rare geminated C-shaped maxillary second molar comprised of two sections in its crown, including a geminated section attached to a normal coronal of a second maxillary molar diagnosed with the pulpal status "necrosis" and "irreversible pulpitis" in geminated section and the molar respectively. Thus, endodontic treatment was performed on both

Subjective sensation and objective neural discharges recorded from clinically nonvital and intact teeth.

The aim of this study was to compare subjective sensation with objective neural discharges recorded by microneurography. We examined human teeth that did not respond to pulp vitality testing, but that responded to cavity preparation for endodontic treatment (pathophysiological). Intact teeth and endodontically obturated teeth were used as controls. Pulpal blood flow in the clinical crown and histological examination were also used. Most teeth, both in normal and pathophysiological conditions, did not respond to all pulp vitality tests. Even when teeth in the pathophysiological group showed spi

Esthetic considerations when splinting with fiber-reinforced composites.

The primary reasons for splinting and stabilizing teeth are to connect them for the purpose of replacing missing teeth or as an adjunct to p … eful planning in the diagnosis and treatment of the fiber splint is essential to allow for adequate tooth preparation to give the illusion of nonsplinted teeth. When missing teeth are replaced with a fiber-reinforced, direct, fixed partial denture, the pontic must be created to achieve an esthetically pleasing result.

Pulpal vascular changes in inflammation.

Changes in pulpal vessels in experimentally induced acute and chronic pulpitis in dog tooth were investigated using corrosive resin casts and scanning electron microscopic examination. Following a cavity preparation without water spray, increased permeability of blood vessels occurred in the primary stage of acute pulpitis. This was evidenced by the extravasation of resin from the vessel. This phenomenon was found initially in the venular network as well as in the capillary network located under the dentin. The morphological change was minimal in the vascular network underneath the cavity. Thi

Students' perspectives on 3D-printed-simulated-caries teeth in transition to operative practice.

The transition from pre-clinical to clinical operative dentistry requires effective training tools; however traditional typodont teeth often fall short in simulating clinical scenarios such as caries preparation. This study evaluated the perspectives of 71 third-year dental students from the classes of 2024 and 2025 at Harvard School of Dental Medicine on the use of 3D-printed caries teeth as a preparatory tool. Students participated in case-based collaborative learning and operative exercises using these models, with pre- and post-surveys capturing feedback on realism, usability, and educatio

Postoperative pulpal and repair responses.

BACKGROUND: Each year in the United States, the success of 10 million surgically restored carious lesions depends on a favorable tertiary dentin repair response to preparation, restoration and patient factor variables. The authors investigated the relationship between these variables and dentinal response. METHODS: Standardized rectangular Class V restoration preparations were cut into the buccal dentin of intact first or second premolars of 27 patients without exposing the pulp and were restored. The patients were between 9 and 17 years of age. The treated teeth were scheduled for extraction

Advances in Hydrogels for Periodontitis Treatment.

Periodontitis is a common condition characterized by a bacterial infection and the disruption of the body's immune-inflammatory response, which causes damage to the teeth and supporting tissues and eventually results in tooth loss. Current therapy involves the systemic and local administration of antibiotics. However, the existing treatments cannot exert effective, sustained release and maintain an effective therapeutic concentration of the drug at the lesion site. Hydrogels are used to treat periodontitis due to their low cytotoxicity, exceptional water retention capability, and controlled dr
