Histology of tooth attachment tissues and plicidentine in Varanus (Reptilia: Squamata), and a discussion of the evolution of amniote tooth attachment.

Few recent studies have examined the histological basis for tooth attachment in squamates. In the past few years, a surge of interest in this topic has led to the intriguing suggestion that the major tissues derived from the tooth germ (enamel, dentine, cementum and alveolar bone), are conservative and are present in all amniotes. In this study, we describe the histology and development of the tooth attachment complex in Varanus rudicollis, the rough-neck monitor. We provide the first published evidence for the role of cementum and alveolar bone in tooth attachment in varanoid lizards. In Vara

Measurement of ridge alterations following tooth removal: a radiographic study in humans.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was a radiographic mesiodistal analysis of the shape of the bone crest 3 months after tooth removal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred single tooth extractions were performed on 100 patients because of orthodontic or prosthetic causes. Bite blocks were used for two radiographs: one on the day of extraction and the other after healing of the socket, 3 months later. These X-rays were used to determine: (1) the most apical distance of alveolar ridge resorption, with baseline as the line between bone-to-teeth contact (the greatest distance in bone resorption heigh

High-grade liposarcoma metastatic to the gingival mucosa: case report and literature review.

Liposarcoma is the most common family of soft tissue sarcomas and occurs most often in the extremities and retroperitoneum. Primary liposarcoma of any subtype is relatively rare in the tissues of the head and neck, and metastatic liposarcoma is even more unusual. This report describes a recent case of a metastatic high-grade liposarcoma presenting on the dental alveolus. English-language publications on metastatic liposarcoma to the head and neck region are reviewed with an emphasis on the types of therapies used and the resultant outcomes.

Extraction site reconstruction for alveolar ridge preservation. Part 1: rationale and materials selection.

Alveolar ridge resorption has long been considered an unavoidable consequence of tooth extraction. While the extent and pattern of resorption is variable among individuals, there is a progressive loss of ridge contour as a result of physiologic bone remodeling. Over the long term, prosthodontic complications, loss of function, and inadequate bone for the placement of dental implants may result. Guided bone regeneration techniques and the use of bone replacement materials have both been shown to enhance socket healing and modify the resorption process. This review describes the process of alveo

[Root dislocation into the mouth floor as a complication of lower impacted third molar extraction].

Root dislocation into soft tissues during lower jaw third molar extraction belongs to clinically rare complications. The thickness of the cortical plate on the third molar lingual side does not exceed 1.5 mm. Working with an elevator, or headpiece, it is possible to push the roots into the adjacent soft tissue. It is not possible to remove displaced tooth fragment through the socket, it requires additional surgical access from the lingual side. The authors described three clinical cases of root dislocation during third molar removing. Successful surgical treatment was done.

Surgical root restoration after external inflammatory root resorption: A case report.

External inflammatory root resorption after a jaw fracture is rare. This report describes a case of extensive external root resorption in the middle third of the root of a mandibular right canine after a mandibular fracture involving the tooth socket. Because of delayed treatment and damage to the root caused by a surgical screw, root canal treatment was performed followed by surgical intervention. The resorptive defect was debrided and part of the root was rebuilt with conventionally setting restorative glass ionomer cement. Postoperative follow-up revealed complete healing.

Different treatment outcomes of two intruded permanent incisors--a case report.

Intrusive luxation involves the displacement of the tooth apically into the alveolar socket. This type of injury represents a very complex wound, involving disruption of the marginal gingival seal, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament fibers, cementum and the neuro-vascular supply to the pulp, which results in severely compromised healing and possible complications. The case presented is a report of a 60-year-old lady who fell and intruded her two maxillary central incisors. The healing outcomes of the two central incisors were markedly different from each other even though they sustained simil

Extraction site reconstruction for alveolar ridge preservation. Part 2: membrane-assisted surgical technique.

Alveolar ridge resorption has long been considered an unavoidable consequence of tooth extraction. Guided bone regeneration techniques and the use of bone replacement materials have both been shown to enhance socket healing and to potentially modify the resorption process. This article will describe a surgical technique using textured, high-density polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane and particulate bone replacement materials for graft containment and prevention of soft tissue ingrowth into healing extraction sites. The technique described does not require primary closure, facilitating the

Use of third molar transplantation for closure of the oroantral communication after tooth extraction: a report of 2 cases.

OBJECTIVE: This clinical report introduces a promising and unique method for the immediate closure of the oroantral communication (OAC) after tooth extraction: the use of the transplanted third molar with closed apices. STUDY DESIGN: In 2 adult patients, OAC caused by the extraction of an upper molar was immediately closed by using a transplanted third molar with complete root formation. After tooth extraction at the recipient site, OAC with perforated mucosa of the sinus floor was confirmed and the donor third molar was transferred to the prepared recipient socket. Endodontic therapy of the

The Use of Intentional Replantation to Repair an External Cervical Resorptive Lesion Not Amenable to Conventional Surgical Repair.

Intentional replantation consists of purposefully extracting a tooth, correcting the defect and replanting it into its original socket. This case report describes how this technique was used to successfully restore an external cervical resorptive (ECR) lesion. A 22-year-old man was diagnosed with ECR of the mandibular right canine following clinical and radiographic examination. CBCT showed the lesion had been initiated distally and extended circumferentially around the root canal. The nature of the resorptive lesion meant that it was inaccessible to repair conventionally in a predictable mann

Delayed replantation of rat teeth after use of reconstituted powdered milk as a storage medium.

Minimal extraoral dry storage period and moist storage for the avulsed tooth are identified as key steps for the treatment protocol of tooth replantation. Among the possible moist storage media, bovine milk has stood out because of its capacity of preserving the integrity of the periodontal ligament (PDL) fibers. This condition has attracted the attention to investigate the use of powdered milk, which is one of the presentation forms of bovine milk, as a feasible storage medium in cases of delayed tooth replantation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the healing process after delayed repla

Functional modulation of lysophosphatidic acid type 2 G-protein coupled receptor facilitates alveolar bone formation.

Lipid biosynthesis is recently studied its functions in a range of cellular physiology including differentiation and regeneration. However, it still remains to be elucidated in its precise function. To reveal this, we evaluated the roles of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) signaling in alveolar bone formation using the LPA type 2 receptor (LPAR2) antagonist AMG-35 (Amgen Compound 35) using tooth loss without periodontal disease model which would be caused by trauma and usually requires a dental implant to restore masticatory function. In this study, in vitro cell culture experiments in osteoblasts

Intentional replantation - a 'last resort' treatment or a conventional treatment procedure? nine case reports.

Intentional replantation is an accepted endodontic treatment procedure in which a tooth is extracted and treated outside the oral cavity and then inserted into its socket to correct an obvious radiographic or clinical endodontic failure. This article reviews nine cases of intentional replantation (IR) that show the feasibility of the procedure in a variety of indications. Only one case of replantation showed evidence of pathosis that reflected root resorption or ankylosis. This report suggests that IR is a reliable and predictable procedure and should be more often considered as a treatment mo

CBCT assessment of crestal bone changes and stability: Immediate versus delayed implant placement in grafted sites.

Alveolar ridge resorption after tooth extraction complicates optimal implant positioning and increases grafting requirements. Therefore, it is of interest to compare immediate versus delayed implant placement in 60 grafted extraction sites using Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and resonance frequency analysis. Delayed placement preserved more buccal bone (-0.42±0.28 mm loss) than immediate placement (-0.89±0.34 mm, p<0.001), with comparable mesial/distal changes. Both achieved equivalent implant stability, integration and survival after 12 months. Delayed placement advances socket managem

Alveolar wound healing after x-irradiation: a histologic, radiographic, and histometric study.

Healing of extraction wounds in rats following cephalic irradiation was studied by histologic, radiographic, and histometric methods 14 days after tooth extraction. Irradiation was given at 0, 3, and 7 days after surgery in doses of either 15, 20, or 30 Gy. No significant differences were seen with the different doses given seven days post-extraction. However, socket healing was delayed when irradiation was given immediately and three days after extraction. On the basis of these observations, it is recommended that radiation not begin until at least one week after the extraction of teeth.

Bone substitutes for peri-implant defects of postextraction implants.

Placement of implants in fresh sockets is an alternative to try to reduce physiological resorption of alveolar ridge after tooth extraction. This surgery can be used to preserve the bone architecture and also accelerate the restorative procedure. However, the diastasis observed between bone and implant may influence osseointegration. So, autogenous bone graft and/or biomaterials have been used to fill this gap. Considering the importance of bone repair for treatment with implants placed immediately after tooth extraction, this study aimed to present a literature review about biomaterials surro

Restoration of the maxillary anterior tooth using immediate implantation with simultaneous ridge augmentation.

Atrophy is most severe during the first month of post-extraction in the anterior maxilla with the degree of horizontal bone resorption being nearly twice as high as that of vertical bone resorption. The loss of the buccal alveolar plate following tooth extraction may lead to palatal implant positioning of the implants. Thus, immediate or early implant placement in the extraction socket has been suggested, because it would reduce the time period and the number of surgical intervention and yield higher patient satisfaction compared with delayed placed implants. However, placement of an implant i
