Early-life exposure to air pollution associated with food allergy in children: Implications for 'one allergy' concept.

BACKGROUND: The rapid increase of food allergy (FA) has become the "second wave" of allergy epidemic and is now a major global public health concern. Mounting evidence indicates that early life exposure to air pollution is associated with the "first wave" of allergy epidemic (including asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema) in children, but little is known about its association with FA. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize FA has triple exposure pathways, gut-skin-airway, and investigate the effects of airway exposure to outdoor and indoor air pollution on childhood FA. METHODS: A cohort study of 2598

Air quality and PM10-associated poly-aromatic hydrocarbons around the railway traffic area: statistical and air mass trajectory approaches.

Diesel engine railway traffic causes atmosphere pollution due to the exhaust emission which may be harmful to the passengers as well as workers. In this study, the air quality and PM10 concentrations were evaluated around a railway station in Northeast India where trains are operated with diesel engines. The gaseous pollutant (e.g. SO2, NO2, and NH3) was collected and measured by using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The advanced level characterizations of the PM10 samples were carried out by using ion chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma

Assessment of Spatial Variability across Multiple Pollutants in Auckland, New Zealand.

Spatial saturation studies using source-specific chemical tracers are commonly used to examine intra-urban variation in exposures and source impacts, for epidemiology and policy purposes. Most such studies, however, has been performed in North America and Europe, with substantial regional combustion-source contributions. In contrast, Auckland, New Zealand, a large western city, is relatively isolated in the south Pacific, with minimal impact from long-range combustion sources. However, fluctuating wind patterns, complex terrain, and an adjacent major port complicate pollution patterns within t

Spatio-temporal quasi-experimental methods for rare disease outcomes: the impact of reformulated gasoline on childhood haematologic cancer.

Although some pollutants emitted in vehicle exhaust, such as benzene, are known to cause leukaemia in adults with high exposure levels, less is known about the relationship between traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) and childhood haematologic cancer. In the 1990s, the US EPA enacted the reformulated gasoline program in select areas of the U.S., which drastically reduced ambient TRAP in affected areas. This created an ideal quasi-experiment to study the effects of TRAP on childhood haematologic cancers. However, existing methods for quasi-experimental analyses can perform poorly when outcomes

The Effects of Ambient Air Pollutants on Changes in Cardiac Structure and Function.

BACKGROUND: The effects of air pollutants on cardiac structure and function preceding the clinical diagnosis of heart failure are not well understood. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to determine if ambient pollutant concentrations are associated with longitudinal changes in cardiac structure and function. METHODS: Measures of cardiac structure and function were serially assessed by echocardiogram at visits 1 (2008-2011) and 2 (2015-2018), respectively, with a median follow-up of 4.3 years (IQR: 4.0-4.4 years). Outdoor air pollution concentrations at residence were estimated from

Traffic air pollution and mortality rate advancement periods.

Chronic exposure to air pollution is associated with increased mortality rates. The impact of air pollution relative to other causes of death in a population is of public health importance and has not been well established. In this study, the rate advancement periods associated with traffic pollution exposures were estimated. Study subjects underwent pulmonary function testing at a clinic in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, between 1985 and 1999. Cox regression was used to model mortality from all natural causes during 1992-2001 in relation to lung function, body mass index, a diagnosis of chronic p

Maternal residential proximity to major roadways, birth weight, and placental DNA methylation.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to traffic pollution during fetal development has been associated with reduced fetal growth, and there is evidence to suggest that epigenetic mechanisms in the placenta in the form of variant DNA methylation may be a potential mechanism underlying this effect. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between residential proximity to nearest major roadway, as a marker of traffic-related pollution, fetal growth and placental DNA methylation. METHODS: We obtained residential addresses, placenta samples, and demographic data from 471 women following delivery of term infants. U…

Environmental Factors and Risk of Early-Onset Dementia: A Population-Based Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia with symptom onset before the age of 65 is referred to as early-onset dementia (EOD). Many gaps exist regarding EOD etiology, including the role of environmental factors. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control study in Modena province, Northern Italy, enrolling and geocoding 326 EOD cases and 1,941 sex- and age-matched controls, to investigate the association of traffic-related benzene, green spaces around the place of residence, and exposure to artificial outdoor light at night (LAN). We used nonlinear modeling to assess the relation between environmenta

Chronic maternal exposure to low-dose PM2.5 impacts cognitive outcomes in a sex-dependent manner.

There is no safe level of air pollution for human health. Traffic-related particulate matter (PM2.5) is a major in-utero toxin, mechanisms of action of which are not fully understood. BALB/c dams were exposed to an Australian level of traffic PM2.5 (5 µg/mouse/day, intranasal, 6 weeks before mating, during gestation and lactation). Male offspring had reduced memory in adulthood, whereas memory was normal in female littermates, similar to human responses. Maternal PM2.5 exposure resulted in oxidative stress and abnormal mitochondria in male, but not female, brains. RNA-sequencing analysis showe

Method choice in children's exposure assessment for NO2, SO2 and O3.

Assessing children's exposure to air pollutants remains a critical challenge due to their dynamic daily routines and the complexity of pollutant behaviour across microenvironments. This study compared seven methodologies for estimating personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3): passive samplers (PS), fixed-site monitoring (FSM), the CALPUFF and CMAQ models, and their indoor-outdoor (I/O) ratio counterparts. Measurements were conducted across four urban sites, integrating questionnaire-based activity patterns and pollutant-specific I/O ratios. Evaluation

Effect of exposure to ambient PM2.5 pollution on the risk of respiratory tract diseases: a meta-analysis of cohort studies.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer and the World Health Organization have designated airborne particulates, including particulates of median aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), as Group 1 carcinogens. It has not been determined, however, whether exposure to ambient PM2.5 is associated with an increase in respiratory related diseases. This meta-analysis assessed the association between exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and the risk of respiratory tract diseases, using relevant articles extracted from PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. In results, of the 1,126

Clinical and biological impact of the exposome on the skin.

The skin exposome is defined as the totality of environmental exposures over the life course that can induce or modify various skin conditions. Here, we review the impact on the skin of solar exposure, air pollution, hormones, nutrition and psychological factors. Photoageing, photocarcinogenesis and pigmentary changes are well-established consequences of chronic exposure of the skin to solar radiation. Exposure to traffic-related air pollution contributes to skin ageing. Particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide cause skin pigmentation/lentigines, while ozone causes wrinkles and has an impact on

Live Airway Prevotella Attenuated Diesel Exhaust-Induced Lung Injury and Neutrophil Activation via Bacterial Extracellular Vesicles.

Diesel exhaust (DE), as a principal contributor to traffic-related air pollution, poses significant public and occupational health risks. The lung microbiome could be shaped by inhaled pollutants, which play a crucial role in sustaining pulmonary health. Our prior study found a lower abundance of airway Prevotella nanceiensis (P.nan.) in DE-exposed individuals. Here, in this study, live P.nan. and its bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) alleviated lung damage under inhaled DE exposure, accompanied by reduced neutrophil infiltration and activation. Notably, DE triggered lipid droplet accumu

Traffic-related particulate matter affects behavior, inflammation, and neural integrity in a developmental rodent model.

Recent studies indicate that exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) is associated with cognitive delay, depression, anxiety, autism, and neurodegenerative diseases; however, the role of PM in the etiology of these outcomes is not well-understood. Therefore, there is a need for controlled animal studies to better elucidate the causes and mechanisms by which PM impacts these health outcomes. We assessed the effects of gestational and early life exposure to traffic-related PM on social- and anxiety-related behaviors, cognition, inflammatory markers, and neural integrity in juvenile male rat

Green Heart Louisville: intra-urban, hyperlocal land-use regression modeling of nitrogen oxides and ozone.

Exposure to urban air pollution is linked to increased mortality from cardiopulmonary causes. Urban areas juxtapose large numbers of residences and workplaces with near-road environments, exacerbating traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure. TRAP is the primary source of variability in intraurban air quality, but continuous regulatory monitoring stations lack the spatial resolution to detect fine-scale pollutant patterns that recent studies using long-term, resource-intensive mobile measurements have established as persistent and associated with higher risk of cardiovascular events. Residential proximity fine particles related to allergic sensitisation and asthma in primary school children.

BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter has been linked to allergies by experimental and epidemiological data having used aggregated data or concentrations provided by fixed-site monitoring stations, which may have led to misclassification of individual exposure to air pollution. METHODS: A semi-individual design was employed to relate individual data on asthma and allergy of 5338 school children (10.4 +/- 0.7 years) attending 108 randomly chosen schools in 6 French cities to the concentrations of PM2.5 (fine particles with aerodynamic diameter 2.5 microm) assessed in proximity of their homes.
