Epidemiology of patients assessed for trauma by Swedish ambulance services: a retrospective registry study.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of knowledge regarding the epidemiology of severe trauma assessed by Swedish emergency medical services (EMS). AIM: To investigate the prevalence of trauma in Sweden assessed by EMS from a national perspective and describe patient demography, aetiology, trauma type, prehospital triage and clinical outcomes. METHODS: Data from two national quality registries, the Swedish Ambulance Registry and the Swedish Trauma Registry (SweTrau) were collected from January 1 to December 31, 2019. Inclusion criteria were an Emergency Symptoms and Signs code equivalent to trauma in

Infant Feeding Experiences of Women Who Recovered From Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the infant feeding experiences of women who recovered from anorexia nervosa (AN). DESIGN: Descriptive phenomenology. SETTING: Personal interviews. PARTICIPANTS: Sixteen women with histories of AN. METHODS: I used Colaizzi's descriptive phenomenological method. In individual audio-recorded interviews, I asked participants to describe their experiences of being mothers who recovered from AN and how this affected feeding their infants. RESULTS: The direct and indirect effects of histories of AN permeated the participants' infant feeding experiences. Participants did no

A comparison of the predictions made by orthopaedic surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists about the rehabilitation problems of fracture patients.

Health service staff sometimes are not aware of the psychological and social aspects of patients' rehabilitation problems. This paper compares the accuracy of predictions made by orthopaedic surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists about the rehabilitation problems of a series of fracture patients. Predictions were obtained in the acute orthopaedic trauma wards of one hospital, from members of all three professions, about 26 patients selected as likely to have rehabilitation problems. Follow-up data were obtained from interviews with the patients during the six months after their injury and from

[Post-Fracture Care in the Czech Republic: Adherence to Guidelines and Attitudes Toward Fracture Liaison Services].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Untreated osteoporosis often leads to subsequent fractures associated with high morbidity and mortality. In the Czech Republic, approximately 15,000 patients are hospitalized annually with femoral neck fractures, with up to 25% mortality within the first year after a hip fracture. Establishing a coordinated post-fracture care program, such as Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), may substantially reduce this burden. In the FLS model, the role of the coordinator is pivotal. This study aimed to assess baseline adherence to national postfracture care guidelines and to evaluate n

The use of Tiemann tip catheters for male intermittent self-catheterisation.

Male catheterisation can be difficult to perform, especially in patients with an enlarged prostate gland or other potentially obstructive conditions in the lower urinary tract. Repeated and unsuccessful catheterisations, as well as causing trauma, pain and distress, can cause other conditions such as urethral strictures and 'false passages' (when the catheter is pushed through the urethral wall instead of passing down the urethra), which then require more costly interventions to correct. With an increasingly ageing population these complications are expected to rise, putting added strain on an

Incidence and outcome of vertebral artery dissection in trauma setting: analysis of national trauma data base.

BACKGROUND: The natural history and epidemiological aspects of traumatic vertebral artery dissection (VAD) are not fully understood. We determined the prevalence of VAD and impact on outcome of patients with head and neck trauma. METHODS: All the patients who were admitted with traumatic brain injury or head and neck trauma were identified by ICD-9-CM codes from the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB), using data files from 2009 to 2010. NTDB represents one of the largest trauma databases and contains data from over 900 trauma centers across the United States. Presence of VAD was identified in t

Making trauma registries more useful for improving patient care: A survey of trauma care and trauma registry stakeholders across Australia and New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION: Injury is a major global health burden. Trauma registries have been used for decades to monitor the burden of injury and inform trauma care. However, the extent to which trauma registries have fulfilled their potential remains uncertain. The aims of this study were to determine the current and priority uses of trauma registries across Australia and New Zealand and to establish the priority clinical outcomes, the probability for which, if known for an individual trauma patient, would better inform that same patient's care, during hospital admission. METHODS: A prospective observa

Electronic alerts for triage protocol compliance among emergency department triage nurses: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Alerts embedded in electronic health records (EHRs) are designed to improve processes at the point of care. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine if an EHR alert-at emergency department (ED) triage-increases the ED triage nurse's utilization of triage protocols. METHODS: ED triage nurses were randomized to receive either a passive EHR alert or no intervention for patients with the following complaints: minor trauma with extremity injuries or female patients with abdominal pain. The EHR alert notified the nurse that the patient was eligible for diagnostic testing: radi

Hearing evaluation in pediatric patients treated at the hospital following head injury.

The purpose of this study was to assess the results of a hearing evaluation protocol among 130 pediatric patients with a head injury. Sixteen of these patients failed an audiology evaluation. Ten were thought to have failed based on congestion/middle ear dysfunction, while 6 patients had temporary or permanent hearing loss thought to be related to their injury. The majority who failed because of their injury had temporal bone fractures and abnormal visual ear examination results. More research on trauma-related hearing loss following various types of head injuries and skull fractures in pediat

Helicopter Critical Care Retrieval in a Developing Country: A Trauma Case Series from Bhutan.

Background: The care of victims of traumatic injuries requires an organized system to achieve the best outcomes. Dispatch of specialist physicians, paramedics, and nurses to the patient by helicopter can reduce mortality. Countries in the developing world share the challenge of providing timely medical care to trauma victims, while facing others such as a higher trauma burden, poor infrastructure, inadequate government resources, organizational constraints, a lack of technical expertise, and prohibitive costs. These challenges can severely limit the provision of critical prehospital trauma car

Fracture orthopedic risk of non-home discharge score II (FORD-II).

INTRODUCTION: Post-acute placement after fracture trauma is a major driver of hospital length of stay and cost, but discharge needs are often identified late. We developed and validated the Fracture Orthopedic Risk of Non-Home Discharge score, version II (FORD-II), as an admission-time tool to identify adult fracture-trauma patients likely to require post-acute placement. METHODS: We performed a retrospective development and held-out validation study using the National Trauma Data Bank from 2019 to 2024. Adults with International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision fracture diagnoses a

Image transmission and video live-streaming in emergency medical communication centre: a narrative review of its feasability, use, and impact.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency Medical Communication Centres (EMCC) are responsible for assessing calls, providing pre-arrival instructions, and dispatching resources. Telephone-based triage is limited by the lack of visual information, which may lead to under-triage or over-triage. Telemedicine, including image transmission and video live-streaming has emerged as a complementary tool, but its actual impact in EMCC remains uncertain. We aimed to summarise the existing literature on the feasibility, use and impact of telemedicine using image transmission or video live-streaming in EMCCs. METHODS: We

Non-operative advances: what has happened in the last 50 years in paediatric surgery?

Paediatric surgeons remain paediatric clinicians who have the unique skill set to treat children with surgical problems that may require operative intervention. Many of the advances in paediatric surgical care have occurred outside the operating theatre and have involved significant input from medical, nursing and allied health colleagues. The establishment of neonatal intensive care units, especially those focusing on the care of surgical infants, has greatly enhanced the survival rates and long-term outcomes of those infants with major congenital anomalies requiring surgical repair. [Post-traumatic stress syndrome in surgery of the hand].

During our collaboration with the Hand Surgery Unit (HCUG), we have managed trauma patients presenting lesions of the upper limb of varying degrees of severity. We were particularly interested in patients who had undergone amputations. We observed that late psychiatric interventions were generally poorly accepted by the patients and were of no use to these patients. In the light of these findings, we therefore elaborated a new strategy of intervention in collaboration with our surgeon colleagues. Patients with severe upper limb trauma were referred to us immediately after their admission. This

A five year review of anaerobic, necrotizing soft tissue infections: a nursing perspective.

Anaerobic necrotizing soft tissue infections are known for their devastating effects of tissue destruction and death. These infections may occur as a result of trauma, surgical intervention or occur spontaneously in predisposed individuals. They are caused by a wide range of anaerobic organisms and may be categorised according to the tissue involvement as Necrotizing Fasciitis and Myonecrosis. A five year review of patients admitted for hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy and requiring intensive care revealed a patient group numbering 25, roughly equally divided between the two classifications of

Decreased regional cerebral blood flow in medial prefrontal cortex during trauma-unrelated stressful imagery in Vietnam veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging research has demonstrated medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) hyporesponsivity and amygdala hyperresponsivity to trauma-related or emotional stimuli in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Relatively few studies have examined brain responses to the recollection of stressful, but trauma-unrelated, personal events in PTSD. In the current study, we sought to determine whether regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) abnormalities in mPFC and amygdala in PTSD could be observed during the recollection of trauma-unrelated stressful personal events. METHOD: Participants were 35 rig
