Optimized conditions for the in vitro excystment of Calicophoron daubneyi metacercariae.

Paramphistomosis, caused by Calicophoron daubneyi, is an emerging infection of ruminants throughout Western Europe. Despite its prevalence, many questions remain regarding the basic biology of this parasite and how it interacts with its host. Consequently, there is a need to develop methods to study C. daubneyi in vitro to improve our understanding of rumen fluke biology. Towards this, we aimed to identify a suitable protocol for in vitro excystment of C. daubneyi metacercariae. Six methods that have been used to excyst metacercariae from a number of trematode species were tested with C. daubn

[PATHOGENS OF HUMAN TREMATODIASES IN THE PRIMORYE TERRITORY].

The Primorye Territory of Russia is part of a natural habitat for pathogens of four human trematodiases: metagonimiasis (caused by the two worms Metagonimus yokogawai and M. katsuradai in the region), nanophyetiasis (Nanophyetus salmincola schikhobalowi), paragonimiasis (Paragonimus westermani ishunensis), and clonorchiasis (Clonorchis sinensis). The tensest situation in the region has emerged with clonorchiasis, the pathogen of which is extending its area due to anthropogenic sources. In addition to the above mentioned trematodes, the investigators have found 18 more species that may inhabit

Digenean fauna in raptors from northeastern Argentina, with the description of a new species of Strigea (Digenea: Strigeidae).

The digenean fauna of six species of falconiform birds from northeastern Argentina is reported and a new species and several new hosts and geographical records are presented. Strigea proteolytica n. sp. (Strigeidae) is described from Buteogallus urubitinga and distinguished from their congeners by the combination of the following characters: plump body, conspicuous proteolytic gland, forebody with scarce vitelline glands, copulatory bursa with a well developed muscular ring (Ringnapf), and absence of true neck region in hindbody. Six previously known species are breifly described: Strigea falc

In vitro and in vivo trematode models for chemotherapeutic studies.

Schistosomiasis and food-borne trematodiases are chronic parasitic diseases affecting millions of people mostly in the developing world. Additional drugs should be developed as only few drugs are available for treatment and drug resistance might emerge. In vitro and in vivo whole parasite screens represent essential components of the trematodicidal drug discovery cascade. This review describes the current state-of-the-art of in vitro and in vivo screening systems of the blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni, the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica and the intestinal fluke Echinostoma caproni. Examples of

Orientobilharzia species: neglected parasitic zoonotic agents.

Parasites of the genus Orientobilharzia belong to Platyhelminthes, Trematoda, Digenea, Schistosomatidae, and the type species is Orientobilharzia turkestanicum. O. turkestanicum was first described by Skrjabin from cattle in Russian Turkestan in 1913. Adult worms of Orientobilharzia species live in the portal veins or intestinal veins of cattle, sheep and other mammals, and often cause orientobilharziasis in China, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran in Asia, and Russia and Turkey in Europe. More importantly, the cercariae of Orientobilharzia species can infect humans and often cause cercari

Disseminated peritoneal Schistosoma japonicum: a case report and review of the pathological manifestations of the helminth.

Schistosomiasis (also known as bilharzia, bilharziasis, bilharziosis or snail fever) is a human disease syndrome caused by infection from one of several species of parasitic trematodes of the genus Schistosoma. The three main species infecting humans are S haematobium, S japonicum, and S mansoni. S japonicum is most common in the far east, mostly in China and the Philippines. We present an unusual case of S japonicum in a 32-year-old Filipino woman who had schistosomal ova studding the peritoneal cavity and forming a mass in the right iliac fossa.

Parasite diversity in painted frogs inhabiting desert oases in southern Tunisia.

Data on parasites infecting amphibians in arid North-African areas are still scarce. In this study, we investigate the diversity and prevalence of parasites in a painted frog (Discoglossus pictus) population inhabiting desert oases in south-eastern Tunisia. From 120 sampled frogs, we recorded six parasite species, including three protozoa, morphologically identified as Opalina ranarum, Protoopalina intestinalis and Cepedietta gigantea, two nematodes identified as Rhabdias sp. and Cosmocercoides sp., and one trematode identified as Pleurogenoides medians. According to partial sequences of the n

Epidemiology of fishborne trematodiasis in Kazakhstan.

Fish borne trematodes are an important cause of morbidity in Kazakhstan. The number of human cases of opisthorchiidosis (infection with parasites of the family opisthorchiidae) reached a peak of 2521 recorded cases (17 cases per 100,000) in 2002 with a gradual decline to 1225 cases (7.4 cases per 100,000) in 2011. Most human cases are found in the north and north east part of Kazakhstan in areas drained by the Irtysh River and it tributaries. A further focus is found in the north west in the Ural river basin in the European part of Kazakhstan. The most common occupations of patients with opist
