Disregard of neurological impairments associated with neglected tropical diseases in Africa.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect people in the bottom billion poorest in the world. These diseases are concentrated in rural areas, conflict zones and urban slums in Africa and other tropical areas. While the World Health Organization recognizes seventeen priority NTDs, the list of conditions present in Africa and elsewhere that are eligible to be classified as NTDs is much longer. Although NTDs are generally marginalized, their associated neurological burden has been almost completely disregarded. However, reports indicate that trichuriasis, schistosomiasis and hookworm infection, am…

The retinoic acid receptor agonist Am80 increases mucosal inflammation in an IL-6 dependent manner during Trichuris muris infection.

PURPOSE: Vitamin A metabolites, such as all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) that act through the nuclear receptor; retinoic acid receptor (RAR), ha … that buries into the large intestine of mice causing mucosal inflammation, as a model of both human trichuriasis and IBD, treat with an RARα/β agonist (Am80) and quantify the ensuing pathological changes in the gut. RESULTS: Critically, we show, for the first time, that rather than playing an anti-inflammatory role, Am80 actually exacerbates helminth-driven i …

Parasitic infestation in pediatric and adolescent appendicitis: a local experience.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between parasites and pediatric appendicitis is a highly debatable issue. This study aims to investigate the rol … ns, 45 (51.1%) were Enterobaisis, 8 (9.1%) were Schistosomiasis, 23 (26.1%) were Ascariasis, 7 (8%) Trichuriasis, and 5 (5.7%) were Teania Saginata. The percentage of patients with suppurative, gangrenous or perforated appendicitis was similar in both groups with no statistical significance, irrespective of the presence or absence of parasitic infestation. Mass treatment for intestinal helminthiasis control in an Amazonian endemic area in Brazil.

The objective of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and evaluate the sanitary conditions and … ences of intestinal parasitosis before and after the mass treatment. The prevalences of ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm infection were 48%; 27% and 21% respectively in 2002. There was a significant decrease for the frequency of infections by Ascaris lumbricoides (p < 0.05; OR / 95% CI = 0.44 / 0.30 - 0.65), Trichuris trichiura (p < 0.05; OR / 95% CI = 0. …

Where trichuriasis is a major problem, single dose chemotherapy may take some time to reduce prevalence, but reduction of heavy infections will reduce the incidence of Trichuris Dysentery Syndrome, probably benefit the learning abilities of affected schoolchildren, an …

Intestinal geohelminthiasis in the developing world.

Intestinal parasitic helminths such as roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), hookworms (Ancylostoma doudenale and Necator americanus) and whipw … oproteinaemia. In areas where hookworm infestation is endemic, 90% of pregnant mothers are anaemic. Trichuriasis as a causative agent of human disease has only recently gained attention. Heavy infestation with T. trichiura can result in severe colitis and significant blood loss. This in turn can lead to impaired cognitive functions which are reversible on trea …

Clonorchiasis in Korea.

Since the first report on the incidence of egg positiveness of Clonorchis sinensis by Matsumoto in 1915, clonorchiasis has been recognized as one of the most important endemic diseases in Korea. Most of the works on clonorchiasis after then had been studied by Japanese workers until 1945. After the Korean War in 1950-1953, health problems of Koreans were extremely aggravated. This gave us attentions for the prevention of contagious diseases as well as parasitic infections in public health point of view. It was greatly recognized that not only ascariasis, hookworm infections, and trichuriasis, …

Trichuris trichiura infection in children: Two case reports and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of Trichuris trichiura infection in children to increase the awareness of this disease among clinical physicians. METHODS: The clinical data of 2 children infected with T trichiura were retrospectively analyzed, and the literature on T trichiura infection in Chinese children was reviewed. RESULTS: Two patients were admitted to the hospital because of "recurrent blood in the stool for more than 9 months," "a minimum hemoglobin level of 46 g/L" and "anal warts for more than 1 year." The diagnosis was confirmed in both

Trichuris Globulosa Von Linstow, 1901 from one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) in Egypt: prevalence, morphological and molecular study.

BACKGROUND: Trichuris spp. (whipworms) are soil-transmitted helminths distributed worldwide, parasitizing several mammalian hosts such as ruminants, primates, and rodents. Trichuris spp. is one of the most common intestinal parasites affecting both humans and animals, and it can spread directly through the fecal-oral route, resulting in severe illness and financial loss. So, this work aims to detect the frequency of Trichuris spp. in camels in Beheira Governorate, Egypt, and to identify Trichuris spp. through morphometrical studies, molecular analysis, and phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS: A to

First isolation of Trichuris from Chinese serow, Capricornis milneedwardsii (Cetartiodactyla: Caprinae).

Whipworms are soil-transmitted helminths that can infect a variety of animals. A Chinese serow possibly infected by whipworms was found during a wildlife disease surveillance project in Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve, Yunnan, China, in 2021. As convergent evolution is common in coinhabiting parasites, a mitochondrial gene sequence (cox1) and ribosomal gene sequence (ITS1) were used to identify species similar to Trichuris from Chinese serow. The phylogenetic trees and genetic distances of ten Trichuris samples from a Chinese serow together with other Trichuris spp. that have been

Antigens from the parasitic nematode Trichuris suis induce metabolic reprogramming and trained immunity to constrain inflammatory responses in macrophages.

Regulation of macrophage (Mɸ) function can maintain tissue homeostasis and control inflammation. Parasitic worms (helminths) are potent modulators of host immune and inflammatory responses. They have evolved various strategies to promote immunosuppression, including redirecting phagocytic cells toward a regulatory phenotype. Although soluble products from the whipworm Trichuris suis (TSPs) have shown significant effects on Mɸ function, the mechanisms underlying these modulatory effects are still not well understood. In this study, we find that TSPs suppressed inflammatory cytokines (TNF and IL
