A 42-year-old man with a history of repeated abdominal surgery and lymph node tuberculosis underwent orthotopic liver transplantation for primary sclerosing cholangitis. Two years after transplantation, this patient developed a severe protein-losing enteropathy with no evidence of cardiac disease or lymphoproliferative disorder. Imaging work-up revealed hemodynamically significant stenosis of the supra-hepatic caval anastomosis, which was treated by percutaneous balloon angioplasty. All clinical and biochemical disorders resolved within 1 month after percutaneous dilatation, but relapsed simul

In this paper, we review the etiological, clinical and evolutive aspects of patients with fever of unknown origin (FUO) whose hepatic biopsy showed the presence of granulomas (GH). This is retrospective study covering a period of 10 years (1982-1991). The clinical records of all the patients hospitalized due to FUO (n = 71) and of all those in whose hepatic biopsy the presence of GH (n = 70) was documentated, were reviewed. Thirty patients fulfilled both criteria: FUO + GH. In our environment, Q Fever is the most frequent cause of FUO and GH in patients without infection by the HIV. On the con

The coinfection of leprosy and tuberculosis has been rarely reported in literature. A middle-aged man who was a known case of hepatitis B infection had presented with ichthyosis with claw hand deformity and submandibular swelling, which were diagnosed with lepromatous leprosy and scrofuloderma, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a very common droplet infection especially in the northern areas. If untreated, the disease may be fatal within 5 years in more than half of cases. To study the frequency of anti-tuberculous therapy (ATT) induced hepato-toxicity was the subject of the present hospital based descriptive study.
METHOD: The study was conducted in Medical Unit, Ayub Teaching Hospital and patients with diagnosed Tuberculosis in whom ATT was initiated were included in the study. The subsequent development of elevated liver enzyme levels and hepatitis, amongst some members of the stu

At the end of 2005, approximately 7 million people (or 1 of every 33 American adults) were either in jail, in prison, or on parole. Compared with the general public, newly incarcerated inmates have an increased prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus infection, hepatitis B virus infection, hepatitis C virus infection, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. While incarcerated, inmates are at an increased risk for the acquisition of blood-borne pathogens, sexually transmitted diseases, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection, and infection with

A 33-year-old heterosexual white man underwent a liver biopsy for determination of mild elevation of aminotransferase levels (aspartate aminotransferase, two times; alanine aminotransferase, three times). The patient had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (stage IVC2) with tuberculosis of the lymph nodes. Antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody to hepatitis B core antigen were positive. Syphillis tests were positive. Liver architecture was normal; sinusoids were dilated with perisinusoidal, centrilobular, and portal fibrosis. On a 1-micron-thick section and under electron microsco

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is a zoonotic disease endemic in many pastoral regions. Pulmonary involvement, although less common than hepatic, may present with nonspecific respiratory symptoms and mimic other pathologies such as tuberculosis, posing a diagnostic challenge. We report a case of a 17-year-old Arab female from an endemic area who presented with cough, hemoptysis, fever, and general malaise. Chest imaging revealed a cavitary lesion in the upper lobe, raising suspicion of pulmonary tuberculosis or fungal infection. Laboratory findings showed leukocy

BACKGROUND: The present study was done to emphasize the importance of ultrasound (US) and US-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis.
METHODS: Sixty-six proven cases of abdominal tuberculosis were selected for this study. The diagnosis was based on clinical features, US observations, FNAB, operative findings, and responses to appropriate antitubercular treatment. The US findings were interpreted with regard to the involvement of lymph nodes, intestine, peritoneum, solid viscera, and abdominal abscesses. Patients with disease limited to the muscul

In 1999 to 2005, the penitentiaries of Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad Region saw a drastic (almost 30-fold) increase in the number of patients with tuberculous pleurisy concurrent with viral hepatitis and HIV infection. The convicts with concomitant stages IVa, IVb, and IVc HIV infection currently fall ill with tuberculous pleurisy more frequently. In patients with viral hepatitis concurrent with HIV infection, tuberculous pleurisy develops and runs more gravely in proportion to the number of mixed infections than in those without infectious comorbidity. The patients with tuberculous pleur

Treating latent tuberculosis infection is a strategy for eliminating tuberculosis, and isoniazid is recommended as preventive therapy. However, concerns have been raised regarding the application of isoniazid due to its toxicity, particularly hepatotoxicity; however, biochemical monitoring is not routinely performed during treatment. We herein present a case of fatal isoniazid-induced acute liver failure. The patient's liver function was not periodically examined and isoniazid therapy was continued for 10 days despite the onset of symptoms associated with hepatitis. The patient died four month

Tuberculosis has now become a curable disease with chemotherapy. So it is natural that the present issues in tuberculosis management are focused on how to complete standard chemotherapy. In this context, management of adverse effects constitutes an essential part of antituberculosis chemotherapy, as well as directly observed therapy. In this symposium, discussions were held about three major subjects on this issue. First, hepatotoxicity develops frequently and has sometimes fatal outcome, which makes it the most problematic adverse effect. "Management of hepatotoxicity during antituberculosis
