BACKGROUND: Tuberculous pleurisy is traditionally indicated by extreme lymphocytosis in pleural fluid and low yield of effusion culture. However, there is considerable inconsistency among previous study results. In addition, these data should be updated due to early effusion studies and advances in culture methods.
METHODS: From January 2004 to June 2009, patients with tuberculous pleurisy were retrospectively identified from the mycobacteriology laboratories and the pathology and tuberculosis registration databases of two hospitals in Taiwan where tuberculosis is endemic. Pleural fluid chara

Our study investigated the presence of IL-8 in pleural exudates from tuberculosis patients (TBP) (n = 13), and evaluated whether it was related with the profile of major immunocompetent cells present in their pleural and peripheral compartments. To allow comparisons, an additional group of patients with parapneumonic pleural effusions (PNE) (n = 7) was included. Blood peripheral immunophenotypic studies were also carried out in 12 age-matched healthy controls (Co), and 39 tuberculosis patients classified, according to the extent of pulmonary involvement, into mild (n = 9), and advanced (n = 30

The usefulness of bronchoscopy in diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PT) has been demonstrated with many workers after 1980's. The indication for bronchoscopy is in patients suspected of having active PT with negative sputum smear and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The combination of bronchial aspiration, brushing, bronchoalveolar lavage, biopsy and postbronchoscopy sputum give a high yield of early diagnosis, ranging from 40-70% of cases. Furthermore, early diagnostic rate improves by these procedure adding PCR in 85%. The bacteriologic study of pleural effusion in diagnosis of tuberculou

We report 2 cases of pseudochylothorax and review 172 published cases. Tuberculosis is by far the most frequent cause of pseudochylothorax, accounting for 54% of all caes, with a remarkable association with previous collapse therapy and long-term effusions. The remaining etiologies, including rheumatoid arthritis, are infrequent. Tuberculous pseudochylothorax is usually sterile. Successful treatment of an acute tuberculous pleurisy does not preclude the development of long-term complications such as pseudochylothorax. We do not recommend pleural biopsy initially because of its low yield for et

In 2024, 10.8 million new tuberculosis cases were reported globally. Of these, 19% were extrapulmonary (EPTB), meaning the infection occurred outside the lungs. Tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) is a difficult disease to diagnose because it is only paucibacillary, so consideration should be given to the rapid and easily available diagnostic tools in high tuberculosis prevalence environments. The study was an observational study aimed at assessing diagnostic value of adenosine deaminase (ADA) and Cartridge-Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (CBNAAT) in 200 patients with pleural effusion in

In order to know extrapulmonary tuberculosis in our environment the results of all samples submitted for culture of mycobacteria to the Microbiology Department, Fundación Jiménez Díaz, from 1980 to 1993 were analyzed. During this period 290 cases of extrapulmonary cases were diagnosed, 101 from 1980 to 1985 and 189 from 1986 to 1993. The most common site of infection before 1985 was in genitourinary tract (42.6%); in contrast, from 1986 onwards the more common sites of infection were pleural (22.8%), genitourinary tract and lymphatic glands (22.2% in both sites). When EPT was compared in the t

A 55-year-male with chest symptoms and apical pulmonary lesions was diagnosed as a case of sputum smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis at a peripheral health centre in India on the basis of Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme Guidelines--he was put on antitubercular chemotherapy. He had no radiological or clinical improvement with antitubercular treatment, so the patient was referred to our institute. On evaluation, we found that the patient had multisystem involvement with typical features of Marfan syndrome and a suggestive history in other blood-relatives. Upper lobe fibrosis,

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical, pathological and radiological characteristics of pleural tuberculoma, so as to improve the understanding of this disease.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical, laboratory, pathological and radiological data of 83 cases of pleural tuberculoma diagnosed by pathology and(or) bacteriology in Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University.
RESULTS: In the recruited 83 cases, there were 50 males and 33 females, aged from 7 to 85 years old, with a mean age of 37.8 years. Cough, fever and chest pain were common symptoms, but no signif

Based on the clinical evidence obtained during the past decade, we reviewed herein the evidences in the treatment of 5 types of common pleural diseases. (1) Therapeutic pleural interventions are not recommended for patients with malignant pleural effusion (MPE) who are asymptomatic. In patients with symptomatic MPE, large-volume thoracentesis should be performed in MPE patients to figure out if the patient's symptoms are related to the effusion and/or if the lung is expandable; if so, indwelling pleural catheters and/or talc pleurodesis can be used as first-line definitive intervention. Indwel

Primary effusion lymphoma-like lymphoma (PEL-LL) is a rare lymphoma, localized in the body cavity without detectable tumor masses. Tuberculous pleural effusion is a form of extra pulmonary tuberculous. We herein report three cases of PEL-LL in patients with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis. Despite the presentation with lymphocyte predominance and high levels of adenosine deaminase, a notable characteristic of tuberculous pleural effusion, the patients were ultimately diagnosed with PEL-LL. Pleural fluid laboratory tests yield similar results for PEL-LL and tuberculous pleural effusion; the

Pleural biopsies are especially indicated in the following circumstances: a) inconclusive pleural fluid analysis and negative sputum study, if adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels are unavailable; b) suspected multi-resistant tuberculosis; c) a need for differentiating tuberculous pleurisy (if it progresses with neutrophilia) and complicated parapneumonic effusion; d) malignant pleural effusion coexisting with very high ADA levels; e) effusion coexisting with lung cancer and negative pleural cytology; f) suspected mesothelioma; and g) need for implementing re-treatment for patients with relapse af

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the utility of serum and pleural fluid biomarkers for predicting residual pleural scarring (RPS) in tuberculous pleuritis.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective study of patients with pleural tuberculosis was performed. Demographic data, clinical parameters, haematological indices, serum and pleural fluid biochemistry and pleural effusion area were assessed for correlation with the extent of RPS.
RESULTS: RPS was found in 41.4% of the 70 cases evaluated, with significant pleural scarring being present in 7.1%. It was more common in males (odds r

Chylothorax is a rare manifestation of tuberculosis. We report a case of spontaneous chylothorax due to tuberculosis. A 62-year-old woman was admitted with fever, chest pain and dyspnea. Chest and abdominal computed tomography revealed a fluid collection with necrotic mediastinal and abdominal lymph nodes. Biopsy of lymph nodes by mediastinoscopy. The patient was treated with anti-tuberculosis medication. He is clinically improved and his pleural effusion also completely resolved.
