Affective disorders among patients with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: The high co-occurrence between borderline personality disorder and affective disorders has led many to believe that borderline personality disorder should be considered as part of an affective spectrum. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the prevalence of affective disorders are higher for patients with borderline personality disorder than for patients with other personality disorders. METHODS: In a national cross-sectional study of patients receiving mental health treatment in Norway (N = 36 773), we determined whether psychiatric outpatients with borderline pers

Personality profiles and subjective perception of pain in head pain patients.

Little or no information is available regarding the effect of the personality characteristics of headache sufferers on the quality of pain perception. The aim of this study is to investigate, in head pain sufferers, the relationship between the personality profile, assessed by the MMPI, and the different dimensions of pain (sensory, affective and evaluative), as assessed by the MPQ. Three hundred and seventeen patients with Migraine and/or tension-type headache (episodic or chronic) and myogenic facial pain were included. The Italian versions of the MMPI-2 and MPQ were administered, and the pa

Vascular Analysis of Type 1, 2, and 3 Macular Neovascularization in Age-Related Macular Degeneration Using Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Shows New Insights into Differences of Pathologic Vasculature and May Lead to a More Personalized Understanding.

Background: The clinical appearance of macular neovascularization (MNV) in age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) varies widely, but so far, this has had no relevance in terms of therapeutic approaches or prognosis. Therefore, our purpose was to investigate if and which differences exist in the vascular architecture of MNV and to quantify them. Methods: In 90 patients with newly diagnosed nAMD, MNV was identified by means of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), and automated quantitative vascular analysis was carried out. The analyzed vascular parameters were area, flow, fractal d

Laxative abuse among women with eating disorders: an indication of psychopathology?

OBJECTIVE: The results of the scant research on laxative abuse among women with eating disorders suggest that laxative abuse is a diagnostic indicator of greater psychopathology. We further investigated the relationship of history of laxative abuse to eating and related attitudes, impulsivity, and personality pathology. METHOD: Women assessed in an outpatient clinical setting and diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, binge-eating/purging type (n = 51) or bulimia nervosa, purging type (n = 280) completed measures of laxative abuse, eating and related attitudes, and personality psychopathology at in

[Affective phases in dynamics of personality disorders (on a model of borderline personality disorder)].

Affective phases developing in personality disorder (index-sample--98 patients) were compared to those in cyclothymia (85 patients--control group). A preference of phase dynamics in the group of abnormalities relating to ICD-10 item "Borderline personality disorder" was confirmed. In line with a concept considering personality disorders as clinical syndromes, patients of the index-group have personality disorders with the signs of psychopathological diathesis determined by vulnerability to affective disorders. Affective phases are interpreted not only as an expression of a specific type of per

Personality traits in adults with hoarding disorder.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has demonstrated a link between compulsive hoarding symptoms and personality traits; however, no studies have investigated the link between hoarding and personality traits utilizing a sample of individuals diagnosed with hoarding disorder (HD) using formal diagnostic criteria. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the frequency and type of personality traits in adults diagnosed with HD and to explore the associations among hoarding severity and personality disorder traits within this sample. METHODS: Seventy-two veterans enrolled in an ongoing treatment trial

Specificity revisited: personality profiles and behavioral issues.

The notion of a connection between illness and temperament goes back at least as far as Hippocrates with his typology of melancholy, sanguine, phlegmatic and choleric personality types. In the 1930s, Dunbar studied large numbers of patients with several chronic diseases from which she derived personality profiles which correlated with the illnesses. Many other studies developed similar correlations. Following the work of Alexander, this approach was deemed superficial. More recently, the description of type A behavior has consistently been shown to correlate with coronary artery disease. The c

The Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire predicts functioning styles of personality disorder: a trial in healthy subjects and personality-disorder patients.

Normal personality traits, as measured by the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ), predicted some personality disorders in a sample of healthy volunteers. Whether these predictions could be more pronounced in patients with personality disorders remains unknown. We administered the ZKPQ and the Parker Personality Measure (PERM), which describes the functioning styles of personality disorder, in 134 patients with a range of personality disorders and in 268 age-, gender- and education level-matched healthy volunteers. Cluster A patients scored lowest on Sociability, cluster B highe

[Effect of personality factors and structure on the course of major depression].

The extent to which personality characteristics predict the course of severe depression has been controversially discussed. In a sample of 50 depressed inpatients, the significance of personality characteristics for the prediction of relapse was studied prospectively over 2 years. More than half of the patients studied suffered relapses within this period. Well-known predictors such as the number of previous episodes were confirmed. The personality characteristics studied showed different predictive effects at 1- and 2-year follow-up. Neurosis proved predictive of the 1-year course and outcome

Emotional abuse interacts with borderline personality in adolescent inpatients with binge-purging eating disorders.

PURPOSE: Childhood abuse is associated with an increased risk of developing eating disorders (EDs) as well as personality disorders (PDs). However, their interaction is still uncertain, particularly in adolescents. This study investigates the correlations between childhood emotional neglect (CEN), childhood emotional abuse (CEA), and obsessive-compulsive and borderline personality styles in female adolescent inpatients with eating disorders (EDs). METHODS: One hundred and twenty-eight inpatients (ages 14-18) were assessed, 54 were diagnosed with restricting-type anorexia nervosa (AN-R) and 33

Association between personality disorder and violent behavior pattern.

Personality disorders are associated with criminality and antisocial and borderline personalities as strong predictors of violence. Nevertheless antisocial patients show more instrumental violence, while borderline patients more emotional violence. We surveilled medical records of a personality disorder facility, searching data of aggression and crimes against property among 11 patients with antisocial personality disorder and 19 borderline personality disorder. We found that there are differences regarding engagement in violence and lawbreaking according to the personality disorder: antisocia

Personality and artificial light at night in a semi-urban songbird population: No evidence for personality-dependent sampling bias, avoidance or disruptive effects on sleep behaviour.

Light pollution or artificial light at night (ALAN) is an increasing, worldwide challenge that affects many aspects of animal behaviour. Interestingly, the response to ALAN varies widely among individuals within a population and variation in personality (consistent individual differences in behaviour) may be an important factor explaining this variation. Consistent individual differences in exploration behaviour in particular may relate to the response to ALAN, as increasing evidence indicates its relation with how individuals respond to novelty and how they cope with anthropogenic modificatio

Excess cause-specific mortality in in-patient-treated individuals with personality disorder: 25-year nationwide population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Although personality disorders are associated with increased overall mortality, less is known about cause of death and personality type. AIMS: To determine causes of mortality in ICD personality disorders. METHOD: Based on data from Swedish nationwide registers, individuals admitted to hospital with a primary diagnosis of personality disorder between 1987 and 2011 were followed with respect to mortality until 31 December 2011. Standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) with 95% confidence intervals and underlying causes of death were calculated. RESULTS: All-cause SMRs were increased,

Development of an integrated model of personality, personality disorders and severe axis I disorders, with special reference to major affective disorders.

A unidimensional model of the relationships between normal temperament, psychopathic variants of it and the two main forms of so-called endogenous psychoses (major affective disorders and schizophrenia) was derived from Kretschmer's constitutional typology. It was, however, not confirmed by means of a biometric approach nor was Kretschmer's broad concept of cyclothymia as a correlate of physical stoutness on the one hand and major affective disorders on the other supported by empirical data. Yet the concept of the 'melancholic type' of personality of patients with severe unipolar major depress

Self-reported narcissistic traits in patients with addiction through the lens of the ICD-11 model for personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is a presumption that pathological narcissism, or narcissistic personality disorder per se, can be considered a precursor to addiction. Although the ICD-11 model does not distinguish specific personality disorders, narcissistic psychopathology should be captured through personality trait qualifiers. OBJECTIVES: To verify the capacity of the ICD-11 model in the detection of narcissistic psychopathology in patients with addiction; to test its discrimination capacity, convergent validity, and specificity toward the gender and the type of addiction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two s
