Virtual and live social facilitation while exergaming: competitiveness moderates exercise intensity.

Grounded in social facilitation theory, this study compared the impact on exercise intensity of a virtual versus a live competitor, when riding a virtual reality-enhanced stationary bike ("cybercycle"). It was hypothesized that competitiveness would moderate effects. Twenty-three female college students were exposed to three conditions on a cybercycle: solo training, virtual competitor, and live competitor. After training without a competitor (solo condition for familiarization with equipment), participants competed against a virtual avatar or live rider (random order of presentation). A repea

Database of the clinical phenotypes, genotypes and mutant arylsulfatase B structures in mucopolysaccharidosis type VI.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type VI (MPS VI) is a genetic disorder caused by a deficiency of arylsulfatase B (ARSB). In our previous study, we investigated the structural changes in ARSB caused by amino acid substitutions associated with MPS VI, and revealed that such structural changes in ARSB were correlated with the clinical phenotypes. To the best of our knowledge, there is no database containing the structures of mutant ARSBs. Here, we built a database of clinical phenotypes, genotypes and structures of mutant ARSBs (http://mps6-database.org). This database can be accessed via the Internet, and

An interactive map to assess the potential spread of Lymnaea truncatula and the free-living stages of Fasciola hepatica in Switzerland.

The intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica is Lymnaea truncatula in Switzerland. The snail and the free-living stages of the parasite require a moderate climate and moisture for survival, reproduction, and transmission. In Switzerland, these conditions are present in many regions, resulting in a mean prevalence of bovine fasciolosis from 8.4 to 21.4%. An interactive map was created in order to demonstrate the relative risk of transmission by modelling the environmental conditions that promote the survival and reproduction of the larval stages of the parasite and the parasite's intermediate hos

The use of virtual environments for survey spatial ability evaluation in topographical disorientation.

Due to their interactivity and to the sense of presence they afford, virtual environments constitute an interesting opportunity to study spatial cognition. In accordance with this perspective, we aimed to introduce a spatial test in virtual simulation in order to investigate the survey spatial ability in patients with topographical disorientation. To do this, we used the "planning in advance task" in a virtual environment that constitutes an effective procedure to experimentally evaluate survey maps. With this procedure we present the single case of a woman, with a right medial temporal lobe l

Using virtual environments for teaching social understanding to 6 adolescents with autistic spectrum disorders.

Six teenagers with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) experienced a Virtual Environment (VE) of a café. They also watched three sets of videos of real cafés and buses and judged where they would sit and explained why. Half of the participants received their VE experience between the first and second sets of videos, and half experienced it between the second and third. Ten naïve raters independently coded participants' judgments and reasoning. In direct relation to the timing of VE use, there were several instances of significant improvement in judgments and explanations about where to sit, bot

Anticipation of public speaking in virtual reality reveals a relationship between trait social anxiety and startle reactivity.

BACKGROUND: Startle reflex modification has become valuable to the study of fear and anxiety, but few studies have explored startle reactivity in socially threatening situations. METHODS: Healthy participants ranging in trait social anxiety entered virtual reality (VR) that simulates standing center-stage in front of an audience to anticipate giving a speech and count backward. We measured startle and autonomic reactivity during anticipation of both tasks inside VR after a single baseline recording outside VR. RESULTS: Trait social anxiety, but not general trait anxiety, was positively corre

[Early diagnosis of colorectal cancer].

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the world and the second most common and most frequently mentioned cause of cancer death in Poland. Death from colorectal cancer can be reduced through early diagnosis. Currently there are several screening methods: faecal occult blood tests, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, barium enema and emerging methods like virtual colonoscopy and faecal DNA testing. In this article we show the efficacy of these tests with respect to their sensitivity, specificity, costs and safety. Patients at high-risk of colorectal cancer were also considered. There is

A C+ + class library foundation for developing an electronic medical record.

The basic features that gave the M (or Mumps, as it originally called) language its initial popularity are still important to many programming applications, especially those involving the health care domain. To date, however, efforts to change the language have been predicated on the axiom that the existing structure must be preserved in order to accommodate legacy applications. To many, it is becoming clear that the 1960s' minicomputer induced interpreter syntax underlying M is inadequate and incapable of further evolution. In this paper, we demonstrate an alternative that preserves those fea

Voltage control for microchip capillary electrophoresis analyses.

This paper presents an inexpensive and easy-to-implement voltage sequencer instrument for use in microchip capillary electrophoresis (MCE) actuation. The voltage sequencer instrument takes a 0-5 V input signal from a microcontroller and produces a reciprocally proportional voltage signal with the capability to achieve the voltages required for MCE actuation. The unit developed in this work features four independent voltage channels, measures 105 × 143 × 45 mm (width × length × height), and the cost to assemble is under 60 USD. The system is controlled by a peripheral interface controller and c

Automated Deep Brain Stimulation Programming for Tremor.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) programming, the systematic selection of fixed electrical stimulation parameters that deliver maximal therapeutic benefit while limiting side effects, poses several challenges in the treatment of movement disorders. DBS programming requires the expertise of trained neurologists or nurses who assess patient symptoms according to standardized clinical rating scales and use patient reports of DBS-related side effects to adjust stimulation parameters and optimize therapy. In this paper, we describe and validate an automated software platform for DBS programming for tre

Brain-computer interfaces in neurological rehabilitation.

Recent advances in analysis of brain signals, training patients to control these signals, and improved computing capabilities have enabled people with severe motor disabilities to use their brain signals for communication and control of objects in their environment, thereby bypassing their impaired neuromuscular system. Non-invasive, electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies can be used to control a computer cursor or a limb orthosis, for word processing and accessing the internet, and for other functions such as environmental control or entertainment.
