Imaging findings of "anesthesia mumps" (acute postoperative sialadenitis) after general anesthesia.

We present a rare case of acute postoperative sialadenitis or "anesthesia mumps" necessitating emergent intubation in a 16-year-old girl after biopsy of a brainstem mass under general anesthesia. Postoperative computed tomography of the brain demonstrated extensive right-sided facial swelling, parotid gland enlargement, and pharyngeal edema extending to the parapharyngeal space, soft palate, and uvula with significant narrowing of the airway. To our knowledge, this entity has not been previously described in the radiologic literature.

Van der Woude syndrome with an unusual intraoral finding.

Orofacial manifestations of Van der Woude syndrome (VWS) include cleft lip or palate, lower lip pits, hypodontia, hypernasal voice, cleft or bifid uvula, syngnathia, narrow high arched palate, and ankyloglossia. Extraoral manifestations include limb anomalies, popliteal webs, accessory nipples, congenital heart defects, and Hirschsprung disease. We report an interesting case of VWS with characteristic orofacial features along with an unusual additional finding of fusion of primary mandibular left lateral incisor and canine in a 7-year-old boy.

Fibrolipomatous hamartoma in a patient with tuberous sclerosis: report of a case.

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare congenital disorder with an incidence of 1 in 6000 births. The classic triad is seizure, mental deficiency, and angiofibromas. Orofacial manifestations include fibrous hyperplasia, hemangioma, bifid uvula, cleft lip and palate, macroglossia, high arched palate, and enamel defects. Benign tumors of the jaws including desmoplastic fibroma, calcifying odontogenic tumor, and odontogenic myxoma have been recently reported in tuberous sclerosis. This case report adds fibrolipomatous hamartoma of the mandible to this list.

Compensatory articulations in a case of congenital aglossia.

This paper examines the articulatory and phonatory strategies used by a German female born without a tongue. Analysis concentrates on the phonetic correlates of dorsal plosives. The speaker uses two main strategies. In word list material, closure for initial /k, g/ is produced using a combination of the uvula, floor of the mouth and adduction of the glossopalatal arches. In other environments, closure is made at the glottis. The glottal strategy is shown to be consistently different from the junctural glottalization used at vowel onset.

Carcinoma of the oropharynx: soft palate.

This article reviews the experience of The Princess Margaret Hospital in the management of squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate and uvula. Between 1970 and 1979, 70 patients with this diagnosis received primary radiation therapy. The overall five year survival is 43%. The primary tumor was controlled in 80% by radiation. Advanced local (T3) and nodal (N2/3) disease proved difficult to control with radiation alone. The development of second malignancies in patients cured of their primary cancer remains a distressing problem.

[Reciprocal translocation t (5p--;19p+) in three generations (author's transl)].

A reciprocal translocation t (5p-;19p+) in 3 generations is reported. Three carriers with this translocation were healthy, the propositus with the same translocation showed cheilopalatochisis bilaterally, microphthalmus, coloboma of the retina and dysplasia of the hip joints. The cytogenetically unremarkable father of the propositus exhibited micropthalmus and coloboma of the disc and a bifid uvula. It was supposed that there is no correlation between caryotype and phenotype in the propositus. His abnormalities might be induced genetically by the father. The risk data for the descendants of ca…

Respiratory syncytial virus-induced uvulitis.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a respiratory virus that accounts for more than 100,000 ED visits per year. RSV causes the greatest morbidity in infants and children; however, older adults with chronic comorbidities have increased risk of hospitalization due to complications of RSV compared with those who do not have chronic conditions. Typical symptoms of RSV in older adults include cough, rhinorrhea, and sore throat; however, in more serious cases, wheezing, difficulty breathing, or shortness of breath may be present, potentially prompting ED visits. Infections due to other viruses, suc

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is a generally safe and widely accepted surgical procedure for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Unfortunately, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty does not always result in success, and patients who initially experienced improvement in the severity of their obstructive sleep apnea may relapse. Proper patient selection and performing uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in conjunction with other surgical procedures that are directed at other sites of upper airway collapsibility may yield favorable outcomes.

Objectives for cleft palate repair.

Improved anesthesia and nutrition are permitting earlier safe cleft palate repair, with higher success rates. Three factors that are conside … l stimulation of the palate muscles prior to palate repair. A technique for relocating the musculus uvulae is described. It is concluded that at least 9 out of 10 palates are long enough at birth and have sufficient mobility, provided that this is not impaired iatrogenically, to obtain satisfactory speech. Emphasis needs to be placed on providing a norm …

Anesthetic managements for correction of aortic valve regurgitation in a patient with Loeys-Dietz Syndrome: A case report.

Loeys-Dietz Syndrome (LDS) is a recently described autosomal dominant aortic aneurysm syndrome with widespread systemic involvement. It is characterized by the triad of 1) arterial tortuosity and aneurysms, 2) hypertelorism, and 3) bifid uvula or cleft palate. A 12-year-old boy with LDS was scheduled to undergo correction of aortic valve regurgitation due to aortic annuloectasia. We report our clinical experiences of a case of LDS patient with brief review of related literatures and relevant anesthetic problems.
