The effect of food on serum gastrin and gastric acid secretion has been studied in dogs with denervated pouches before and after antrectomy and subsequent vagotomy. A Billroth I anastomosis was used in one group of dogs and a Billroth II in the other. Serum gastrin was measured by radioimmunoassay. In both groups of dogs antrectomy significantly depressed mean basal levels of serum gastrin and abolished the rise in serum gastrin in response to a meat meal. We present a case report of a 48-year-old woman with intractable prepyloric ulcers treated with laparoscopic bilateral truncal vagotomy, antrectomy, and Billroth I anastomosis. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the 5th postoperative day, eating a regular diet. Her postoperative recovery has been uneventful and without complications. Laparoscopic bilateral truncal vagotomy, antrectomy, and Billroth I may be the procedure of choice for intractable prepyloric and pyloric ulcers.

The main purpose of this study was to further investigate the effects of vagotomy on gastric lesion development. In contrast to the usual subdiaphragmal vagotomy, a different vagotomy at the level of the trigonum caroticum was used both alone and in combination with pylorus ligation (done immediately after vagal transection). Rats having undergone parietal cell vagotomy (PCV) or PCV with antrectomy were sacrificed and gastric mucosal samples studies by electron microscopy. Degeneration of axons was followed by the appearance of small, neurotubule-rich axons which increased in size and number with increasing postoperative interval. The source of these regenerating fibers is unknown but may have come from the fundus.

By recording the lower beak movement, open-mouth breathing was monitored in adult hens restrained in a supine position with the cannulated trachea under rebreathing conditions, bilateral cervical vagotomy or heat load.
