Cerebral correlates of declarative memory dysfunctions in early traumatic brain injury.

We investigated residual brain damage in subjects who suffered severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in childhood, and its relationship with declarative memory impairment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) volumetric data and memory performance were compared between 16 adolescents with antecedents of severe TBI and 16 matched normal controls. Volumes of grey matter, white matter, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), hippocampus, and caudate nuclei were measured. Verbal memory was assessed by the Rey's Auditory Verbal Learning test and visual memory by the Rey's Complex Figure. TBI patients performed signif…

Profiles of cognitive performance associated with reading disability in temporal lobe epilepsy.

92 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) were classified into reading deficient (RD; N = 41) and non-reading deficient (no-RD; N = 51) groups. A cutoff of 80 was used to further classify patients as having low average or better (AVG: IQ > 79) or below average (LOW: 69 < IQ < 80) intellectual ability. Differences between RD-AVG and no-RD-AVG patients in profiles of performance on cognitive tests were specific to verbal and non-verbal memory and verbal abilities, but not visuoconstructional and executive abilities. RD-LOW patients exhibited globally reduced abilities. Profiles of performanc

Contribution of the cerebellum to neuropsychological functioning: evidence from a case of cerebellar degenerative disorder.

A detailed neuropsychological evaluation was performed on a patient with an idiopathic cerebellar degenerative disorder. Significant deficits were found in verbal and nonverbal intelligence, verbal associative learning, and visuospatial skills. These deficits were not readily explained by motor control difficulties. In contrast to the patient's moderately impaired language abilities, he was severely impaired on a test of verbal fluency and demonstrated mild naming deficits. Severe cerebellar parenchymal volume loss was demonstrated by magnetic resonance examination. Supratentorial structures s

Regional hyperconnectivity in the medial temporal lobes as a maladaptive mechanism for colorectal cancer-related cognitive decline.

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world that affects both men and women. Approximately 40% of colorectal cancer patients exhibit cognitive impairment in executive functions including verbal learning, verbal memory, and information processing that is independent of chemotherapy. However, little information is currently available regarding the neural mechanisms underlying colorectal cancer-related cognitive decline (CRCD). In this study, we utilized highly sensitive 7 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging methods combined with standardized cognitive assessments to i…

Effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation on implicit motor learning and language-related brain function: An fMRI study.

AIM: Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is known as a useful application for improving depressive symptoms or cognitive performance. Antidepressive effects by anodal tDCS over the left DLPFC are expected, but the neural mechanisms of these effects are still unclear. Further, in depression, reduced performance and left prefrontal hypofunction during the verbal fluency task (VFT) are generally known. However, few studies have examined the effect of tDCS on the language-related cerebral network. We aimed to investigate whethe

The Spanish version of the computerized dynamic test of analogical reasoning.

PURPOSE: Analogical reasoning (AR), a key skill developing throughout childhood, enables the transfer of relational structures across contexts, facilitating the integration of new knowledge with prior understanding. Children with learning difficulties (LD) may perform less effectively on AR tasks that involve written instructions or abstract verbal analogies, due to their literacy difficulties in processing linguistic information. This study aims to analyze the suitability of the Spanish version of the Computerized Dynamic Test of Analogical Reasoning for testing AR and learning potential in c

Cognitive phenotype and language skills in children with achondroplasia.

BACKGROUND: Although achondroplasia (ACH) may not be considered a condition that is strictly related to neuropsychiatric problems, many children referred to pediatric neurologists and psychiatrists to undergo motor and linguistic diagnostic-rehab procedures. The purpose of this study was to delineate a characterization of language difficulties in a sample of Italian children with achondroplasia and analyze how an untreated language disorder can develop into a learning disability. METHODS: Seventeen Italian children (average age: 5 years and 8 months) with a clinical diagnosis genetically conf

Effect of combined oral contraceptive use on verbal memory function in healthy women.

PURPOSE: Female sex hormones as well as the synthetic hormones contained within combined oral contraceptives (COCs) may influence emotional and cognitive functioning including learning and memory; however, findings are inconsistent. We here present the largest study to date investigating the effect of COC use on verbal memory in healthy women. METHODS: COC use and verbal memory scores were available from the CIMBI database for 205 healthy women in the reproductive age. We assessed if verbal memory and affective bias differed between COC users and non-users. In a subgroup of natural cycling wo

A novel framework to estimate cognitive impairment via finger interaction with digital devices.

Measuring cognitive function is essential for characterizing brain health and tracking cognitive decline in Alzheimer's Disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. Current tools to accurately evaluate cognitive impairment typically rely on a battery of questionnaires administered during clinical visits which is essential for the acquisition of repeated measurements in longitudinal studies. Previous studies have shown that the remote data collection of passively monitored daily interaction with personal digital devices can measure motor signs in the early stages of synucleinopathies, as wel

Road work on memory lane--functional and structural alterations to the learning and memory circuit in adults born very preterm.

Very preterm (VPT) birth is considered a risk factor not only for neurological impairment, but also for reduced function in several cognitive domains in childhood and later in life. Individuals who were born VPT are more likely to demonstrate learning and memory difficulties compared to term-born controls. These problems contribute to more VPT-born children repeating grades and underachieving in school. This, in turn, affects their prospects in adult life. Here we aimed to 1) study how the VPT-born adult brain functionally recruited specific areas during learning, i.e. encoding and recall acro
