The rete ovarii (RO) is an appendage of the ovary that has been given little attention. Although the RO appears in drawings of the ovary in early versions of Gray's Anatomy, it disappeared from recent textbooks, and is often dismissed as a functionless vestige in the adult ovary. Using PAX8 immunostaining and confocal microscopy, we characterized the fetal development of the RO in the context of the mouse ovary. The RO consists of three distinct regions that persist in adult life, the intraovarian rete (IOR), the extraovarian rete (EOR), and the connecting rete (CR). While the cells of the IOR

With Medicaid covering half of US pregnancies, Medicaid Analytic eXtract (MAX) provides a valuable data source to enrich understanding about stillbirth etiologies. We developed and validated a claims-based algorithm to predict gestational age (GA) at stillbirth. We linked the stillbirths identified in MAX 1999-2013 to Florida fetal death records (FDRs) to obtain clinical estimates of GA (n = 825). We tested several algorithms, including using a fixed median GA, median GA at the time of specific prenatal screening tests, and expanded versions considering additional predictors of stillbirth, inc

BACKGROUND: Maternal alcohol consumption remains a significant public health concern. The consumption is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, which can impair fetal growth and lead to low birth weight. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of alcohol use among pregnant women and identify associated factors utilising data from the 2022 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey and Malaria Indicator Survey (TDHS-MIS).
METHODS: This analytical cross-sectional survey design utilised secondary data from the 2022 TDHS-MIS. The surv

AIM OF THE STUDY: Preeclampsia (PE) is associated with severe maternal and fetal morbidity in the acute presentation and there is increasing evidence that it is also an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease later in life. Therefore, preventive strategies are of utmost importance. The Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) London recently developed a first trimester screening algorithm for placenta-related pregnancy complications, in particular early onset preeclampsia (eoPE) requiring delivery before 34 weeks, and preterm small for gestational age (pSGA), with a birth weight <5th percentil

BACKGROUND: Decision delivery interval (DDI) is the time line between a decision to conduct an emergency caesarean section and actual delivery of the baby. Prolong DDI constitute a third phase delay in provision of emergency obstetric care. Intervention designed to minimize DDI are vital, in attempt to prevent maternal morbidity and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The feasibility and practicability of the recommended DDI in recent studies have been questioned especially in limited resource setting and therefore the objective of our study was to determine the DDI and its associated fetalmater

BACKGROUND: Premature rupture of membrane (PROM) is linked to significant maternal prenatal mortalities and morbidity. In Ethiopia, where maternal mortality is still high, the maternal and fetal outcomes in PROM is very important to decrease maternal and child mortality and for better management and prevention of complications. Thus, this study aimed to detect the maternal and fetal outcomes and associated factors in term PROM at Mizan-Aman General Hospital, south-west Ethiopia.
METHODS: A retrospective cross sectional study was conducted using data available at Mizan-Aman General Hospital du

INTRODUCTION: In the current times, fetal growth monitoring has become readily available with the help of Doppler ultrasound. Identification of pregnancies that are at risk for perinatal morbidity and mortality has been a primary goal of obstetric care. Doppler study is a fast, non-invasive test that provides significant information about the hemodynamic status of the fetus. It is an efficient diagnostic modality to assess fetal compromise, which helps in timely intervention in high-risk pregnancies for better perinatal outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to know the corre

Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an increasing health concern during pregnancy, associated with various maternal and fetal complications, such as pre-eclampsia, polyhydramnios, fetal macrosomia, birth trauma, neonatal metabolic complications, and prenatal death. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by symptoms like amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, hirsutism, obesity, infertility, anovulation, and acne. This paper compares the fetomaternal outcomes in patients with both PCOS and GDM and those with GDM alone. Aim The aim of this paper is to compare the fetomaternal outco

Background and objective Among the common endocrinological disorders of pregnancy, thyroid disorders rank second after diabetes. Thyroid autoimmunity is linked to sub-fertility, miscarriages, preterm birth, gestational diabetes, and adverse neurodevelopmental sequelae in children. Peroxidase and thyroglobulin autoantibodies may be associated with enhanced global autoimmune state, which may have adverse effects on the fetal or placental development. It is the main cause of hypothyroidism in reproductive-age women and is associated with poor obstetric outcomes. In Gulf countries, a higher preval

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to explore perinatal and neonatal outcomes amongst infants who received intrauterine transfusion (IUT) for the management of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). The secondary objective was to evaluate the role of key investigations in the fetus at risk of HDFN and assess the relationship with neonatal outcomes. We hypothesized that middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity (MCA-PSV) and corresponding multiples of the median (MoM) would be predictive of neonatal course.

BACKGROUND: Operative vaginal deliveries (OVD) are vaginal deliveries accomplished with the use of a vacuum device or forceps. If it is technically feasible and can be safely accomplished, termination of second stage labor by operative vaginal delivery is indicated in any condition threatening the mother or fetus that is likely to be relieved by delivery. Hence, the objective of this study is to assess the prevalence, common indication, outcome, and associated factors of operative vaginal delivery among mothers who gave birth in Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC).
METHOD: A facility-based

OBJECTIVES: A recent randomized controlled trial of first-trimester anatomy ultrasound in obese women found some advantages to using this technique in this population, but some aspects of feasibility were not clear, such as whether first-trimester ultrasound can be brought outside of a research setting. The learning curve for first-trimester anatomy has been described in the general population, but a learning curve has not been described for this technique in obese patients. This study sought to describe a learning curve for first-trimester anatomy ultrasounds in obese patients with an operato

BACKGROUND: Children exposed to alcohol prenatally may suffer from behavioral and cognitive alterations that adversely affect their quality of life. Animal studies have shown that perinatal supplementation with the nutrient choline can attenuate ethanol's adverse effects on development; however, it is not clear how late in development choline can be administered and still effectively reduce the consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure. Using a rodent model, this study examined whether choline supplementation is effective in mitigating alcohol's teratogenic effects when administered during ado

BACKGROUND: Previous event-related potential (ERP) studies of response inhibition in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) have used a visual Go/NoGo task to study the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on response inhibition. No studies exist using auditory versions of the task; thus, it is unclear how the deficits observed in visual tasks translate into the auditory domain.
METHODS: This study examined ERPs using an auditory Go/NoGo paradigm in a sample of 35 school-age children-18 with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure and 17 normally developing controls.
RESULTS: Alcohol-ex
