Transneuronal tracing of neural pathways controlling an abdominal muscle, rectus abdominis, in the ferret.

Abdominal muscles participate in generating a large number of behaviors and reflex responses, including expiration, coughing, sneezing, vomiting, postural control, production of speech, straining, facilitation of venous return to the heart, and reaction to vestibular stimulation. However, the only premotor neurons that have been conclusively shown to influence abdominal motoneurons are located in nucleus retroambiguus, the expiratory region of the caudal ventral respiratory group. In the present study, the neural circuitry controlling the activity of one abdominal muscle, rectus abdominis, was

Repeated Inertial Stimulation Reveals Divergent Plasticity in Peripheral and Central Vestibular Pathways.

The vestibular system consists of peripheral end organs that provide the brain with temporally precise information about head position in space required for motor coordination and postural stability. Irregular vestibular afferents of the inner ear are particularly sensitive to rapid changes in acceleration, or jerk, which is necessary for making quick, corrective movements and postural adjustments. Vestibular short-latency evoked potentials (VsEPs) are waveforms that provide a measure of synchronous irregular afferent activity originating from peripheral (early peaks) and central (later peaks)

Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation Advancements for Spatial Disorientation Training.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial disorientation (SD) remains the leading contributor to Class A mishaps in the U.S. Navy, consistent with historical trends. Despite this, SD training for military aircrew is largely confined to the classroom and experiential training replicating SD illusions is limited and infrequent. Static flight simulators are most commonly used for training but offer no vestibular stimulation to the flight crew, omitting the source of vestibular-mediated SD.BACKGROUND: We first cover vestibular-mediated SD illusions which may be replicated through galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS)

Vestibular control of skeletal geometry in the guinea pig: a problem of good trim?

Motor control of different segments of the body with multiple degrees of freedom appears to be coordinated by utilizing preferred axes of motor activity. This hypothesis may also be applied to vestibular control of posture. To explore this question we studied the anatomical relationship between the head and the cervical vertebral column by taking radiographs of the head-neck region in unrestrained alert guinea pigs. We determined that biomechanical constraints contribute to the stereotypical skeletal geometry observed in the resting animal and to a functional segmentation of the head-neck move

Mapping vestibular and visual contributions to angular head velocity tuning in the cortex.

Neurons that signal the angular velocity of head movements (AHV cells) are important for processing visual and spatial information. However, it has been challenging to isolate the sensory modality that drives them and to map their cortical distribution. To address this, we develop a method that enables rotating awake, head-fixed mice under a two-photon microscope in a visual environment. Starting in layer 2/3 of the retrosplenial cortex, a key area for vision and navigation, we find that 10% of neurons report angular head velocity (AHV). Their tuning properties depend on vestibular input with

In vivo properties of cerebellar interneurons in the macaque caudal vestibular vermis.

We quantify both spontaneous and stimulus-driven responses of interneurons in lobules X (nodulus) and IXc,d (ventral uvula) of the caudal vermis during vestibular stimulation. Based on baseline firing, at least three types of neuronal populations could be distinguished. First, there was a group of very regular firing neurons with high mean discharge rates. Second, there was a group of low firing neurons with a range of discharge regularity. Third, we also encountered putative interneurons with discharge regularity and mean firing rates that were indistinguishable from those of physiologically

[The origin of efferent fibers to the inner ear on reptiles. A HRP study in Caiman crocodilus (author's transl)].

The origin of efferent fibers to the inner ear was studied in Caiman crocodilus. After injection of horseradish peroxidase into the basilar papilla or into the ampullae of the horizontal and anterior semicircular canals, neurons labeled by the granular reaction product of retrogradely transported HRP were found in the medulla oblongata bilaterally. Parent cells of the efferent cochlear bundle were found in the medial reticular nucleus and in the rostroventral division of the superior olive bilaterally. Efferent vestibular neurons were found in the medial reticular nucleus bilaterally with more

Eye movements of the murine P/Q calcium channel mutant rocker, and the impact of aging.

Mutations in the gene encoding the ion pore of the P/Q voltage-activated calcium channel (CACNA1A) are predicted to alter synaptic transmission and dendritic excitability within cerebellar granule and Purkinje cells. Determining the relationships between these alterations, neuronal activity, and behavior may yield insight into the relationship between neuronal intrinsic properties and signal processing within the ocular motor system. Toward this end, we compared ocular motor performance in the CACNA1A mutant rocker and C57BL/6 controls. Average vertical eye position was abnormally elevated in

Convergence of vestibular and proprioceptive signals in the cerebellar nodulus/uvula enhances the encoding of self-motion in primates.

The integration of different sensory streams is required to dynamically estimate how our head and body are oriented and moving relative to gravity. This process is essential to continuously maintain stable postural control, autonomic regulation, and self-motion perception. The nodulus/uvula (NU) in the posterior cerebellar vermis is known to integrate canal and otolith vestibular input to signal angular and linear head motion in relation to gravity. However, estimating body orientation and motion requires integrating proprioceptive cues with vestibular signals. Lesion studies demonstrate that

A New Vestibular Stimulation Mode for Motion Sickness With Emphatic Analysis of Pica.

Motion sickness (MS) was frequently introduced for rodents in research work through passive motion that disturbed vestibular signals in the presence of visual and aleatory, proprioceptive inputs. Inducement of MS in this way causes conflicting signals that activate intermixed neural circuits representing multimodal stimulation. From reductionism, a lab setup to elicit rat MS via vestibular stimulation was configured in the present study for MS study in connection with dissection of the central vestibular component causally underlying MS. The individual animal was blinded to light with a custom

Ear transplantations reveal conservation of inner ear afferent pathfinding cues.

Vertebrate inner ear neurons project into the correct brainstem nuclei region before target neurons become postmitotic, or even in their absence. Moreover, afferents from transplanted ears in frogs have been shown to navigate to vestibular nuclei, suggesting that ear afferents use molecular cues to find their target. We performed heterochronic, xenoplastic, and heterotopic transplantations in chickens to investigate whether inner ear afferents are guided by conserved guidance molecules. We show that inner ear afferents can navigate to the vestibular nuclei following a delay in afferent entry a

Carbonic anhydrase enzyme histochemistry of cranial nerve primary sensory afferent neurons in the rat.

Hanssons' enzyme histochemical method for the demonstration of carbonic anhydrase has been used to examine primary sensory neurons of cranial nerves in the rat (cochlear ganglion cells excluded). Numerous carbonic anhydrase positive neurons were present in the trigeminal and geniculate ganglia as well as in the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus. A few carbonic anhydrase positive ganglion cells were found in the nodose ganglion, but none in the petrosal and vestibular ganglia. However, in the latter ganglia, satellite cells surrounding the neurons frequently showed staining for carbonic anhydras

Identification of neural networks that contribute to motion sickness through principal components analysis of fos labeling induced by galvanic vestibular stimulation.

Motion sickness is a complex condition that includes both overt signs (e.g., vomiting) and more covert symptoms (e.g., anxiety and foreboding). The neural pathways that mediate these signs and symptoms are yet to identified. This study mapped the distribution of c-fos protein (Fos)-like immunoreactivity elicited during a galvanic vestibular stimulation paradigm that is known to induce motion sickness in felines. A principal components analysis was used to identify networks of neurons activated during this stimulus paradigm from functional correlations between Fos labeling in different nuclei.

Transneuronal pathways to the vestibulocerebellum.

The alpha-herpes virus (pseudorabies, PRV) was used to observe central nervous system (CNS) pathways associated with the vestibulocerebellar system. Retrograde transneuronal migration of alpha-herpes virions from specific lobules of the gerbil and rat vestibulo-cerebellar cortex was detected immunohistochemically. Using a time series analysis, progression of infection along polyneuronal cerebellar afferent pathways was examined. Pressure injections of > 20 nanoliters of a 10(8) plaque forming units (pfu) per ml solution of virus were sufficient to initiate an infectious locus which resulted in

Galvanic vestibular stimulation: from basic concepts to clinical applications.

Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) plays an important role in the quest to understand sensory signal processing in the vestibular system under normal and pathological conditions. It has become a highly relevant tool to probe neuronal computations and to assist in the differentiation and treatment of vestibular syndromes. Following its accidental discovery, GVS became a diagnostic tool that generates eye movements in the absence of head/body motion. With the possibility to record extracellular and intracellular spikes, GVS became an indispensable method to activate or block the discharge in

Vestibular-mediated increase in central serotonin plays an important role in hypergravity-induced hypophagia in rats.

Exposure to a hypergravity environment induces acute transient hypophagia, which is partially restored by a vestibular lesion (VL), suggesting that the vestibular system is involved in the afferent pathway of hypergravity-induced hypophagia. When rats were placed in a 3-G environment for 14 days, Fos-containing cells increased in the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus, the central nucleus of the amygdala, the medial vestibular nucleus, the raphe nucleus, the nucleus of the solitary tract, and the area postrema. The increase in Fos expression was completely abolished or significantly suppress

Analysis of signal processing in vestibular circuits with a novel light-emitting diodes-based fluorescence microscope.

Optical visualization of neural network activity is limited by imaging system-dependent technical tradeoffs. To overcome these constraints, we have developed a powerful low-cost and flexible imaging system with high spectral variability and unique spatio-temporal precision for simultaneous optical recording and manipulation of neural activity of large cell groups. The system comprises eight high-power light-emitting diodes, a camera with a large metal-oxide-semiconductor sensor and a high numerical aperture water-dipping objective. It allows fast and precise control of excitation and simultane
