Effects of local vibration on bone loss in -tail-suspended rats.

We investigated the effects of vibration (35 Hz, 45 Hz and 55 Hz) as countermeasure locally applied to unloading hind limbs on bone, muscle and Achilles tendon. 40 female Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 5 groups (n=8, each): tail-suspension (TS), TS plus 35 Hz/0.3 g vibration (TSV35), TS plus 45 Hz/0.3 g vibration (TSV45), TS plus 55 Hz/0.3 g vibration (TSV55) and control (CON). After 21 days, bone mineral density (BMD) and the microstructure of the femur and tibia were evaluated by μCT in vivo. The biomechanical properties of the femur and Achilles tendon were determined by a materials …

Research on simultaneous impact of hand-arm and whole-body vibration.

This article presents the results of laboratory tests on the combined effect of whole-body vibration (WBV) and hand-arm vibration (HAV). The reactions of subjects exposed to various combinations of vibration were recorded. The vibrotactile perception threshold (VPT) test identified changes caused by exposure to vibration. Ten male subjects met the criteria of the study. There were 4 series of tests: a reference test and tests after exposure to HAV, WBV, and after simultaneous exposure to HAV and WBV. An analysis of the results (6000 ascending and descending VPTs) showed that the changes in VPT…

Hand-arm vibration syndrome: a common occupational hazard in industrialized countries.

Regular exposure to hand-transmitted vibration can result in symptoms and signs of peripheral vascular, neurological and other disorders collectively known as the hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). A significant proportion of workers can suffer from HAVS after using vibrating power tools. HAVS is a chronic and progressive disorder. Early recognition and prevention is the key to managing vibrating tool exposures and health effects. This article gives a broad overview of the condition with a detailed account of its pathogenesis, identification and management.

Whole-body vibration training elevates creatine kinase levels in sedentary subjects.

PRINCIPLES: Whole body vibration (WBV) is an increasingly popular modality of muscle training, especially in sedentary subjects. We hypothesised that the vigorous muscle contractions elicited by WBV can cause muscle damage expressed as an elevation in muscle enzymes. METHODS: Twenty inactive subjects, ten male and ten female, aged 22.7 ± 2.6, BMI 22.4 ± 2.1 were included based on the absence of regular physical activity as defined by international guidelines, and no history of recent trauma, musculoskeletal pathology, implanted prosthetics, cardiovascular disease or drug intake. The intervent…

Effects of vibration training on force production in female basketball players.

The goal of this research project was to investigate the long-term effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) training on force production. Thirty-one female basketball players were randomly distributed in an experimental group: VG (vibration) and a control group: CG (no vibration). Both groups participated in the same training program; however, the experimental group (VG) performed a set of exercises on a vibration platform (Power Plate) at 30- to 35-Hz frequency and 4 mm amplitude, whereas the CG performed the same exercises at 0 Hz. Muscle performance of the legs was tested on a contact-time pla…

[Dysregulation of sinus node activity in cardiopathic patients with vibration disease].

Harmful production factors are known to contribute to elevated morbidity in the population. Early detection of predictors of heart diseases is necessary in subjects exposed to occupational risk factors. Rhythmocardiography permits to diagnose autonomous cardioneuropathy in patients with vibration disease; this condition is regarded as a pathogenetic basis for the early clinical manifestation of coronary heart disease.

Mechanisms mediating vibration-induced chronic musculoskeletal pain analyzed in the rat.

UNLABELLED: While occupational exposure to vibration is a common cause of acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain, eliminating exposure produces limited symptomatic improvement, and reexposure precipitates rapid recurrence or exacerbation. To evaluate mechanisms underlying these pain syndromes, we have developed a model in the rat, in which exposure to vibration (60-80Hz) induces, in skeletal muscle, both acute mechanical hyperalgesia as well as long-term changes characterized by enhanced hyperalgesia to a proinflammatory cytokine or reexposure to vibration. Exposure of a hind limb to vibration…

Splenic vein thrombosis following abdominal compression and vibration: a case report.

The authors describe a 46-year-old man with isolated splenic vein thrombosis (SVT) that developed after concrete drilling, which caused significant compression and vibration of the abdominal wall. Methyltetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency-related hyperhomocysteinemia, which was subsequently diagnosed, predisposed him to this event. To the best of the knowledge of authors, this is the first report of isolated splenic vein thrombosis caused by compression and vibration of the abdomen. Relevant aspects of isolated post-traumatic splenic vein thrombosis in this context are discussed.

Eye movements cannot explain vibration-induced visual motion and motion aftereffect.

Eye movements are thought to account for a number of visual motion illusions involving stationary objects presented against a featureless background or apparent motion of the whole visual field. We tested two different versions of the eye movement account: (a) the retinal slip explanation and (b) the nystagmus-suppression explanation, in particular their ability to account for visual motion experienced during vibration of the neck muscles, and for the visual motion aftereffect following vibration. We vibrated the neck (ventral sternocleidomastoid muscles, bilaterally, or right dorsal muscles) …

Hand-arm vibration syndrome with concomitant arterial thrombosis in the hands.

BACKGROUND: Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) refers to the vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal effects that may occur in workers with prolonged exposure to vibrating tools. Hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS) is a lesion of the ulnar artery at the level of the hamate bone secondary to single or repeated episodes of trauma to the hypothenar eminence. The literature suggests that digital arterial thrombosis and HHS may be associated with the use of vibrating tools. AIM: This study will familiarize investigators with the range of vascular abnormalities seen in workers using vibrating tools…

Cerebral oxygenation and blood volume responses to seated whole-body vibration.

Role of backrest support and hand grip contractions on regional cerebral oxygenation and blood volume were evaluated by near infrared spectroscopy in 13 healthy men during whole-body vibration (WBV). Subjects were exposed to three WBV (3, 4.5, and 6 Hz at approximately 0.9 g(rms) in the vertical direction), in a randomized order on separate days. During WBV, subjects performed right-hand maximal voluntary intermittent rhythmic hand grip contractions for 1 min. Subjects demonstrated highest oxygenation and blood volume values at 4.5 Hz, however, these responses were similar with and without bac…

Effects of aging on vibration detection thresholds at various body regions.

BACKGROUND: The ability to detect sinusoidal vibrations on the skin surface is dependent on the activation of two classes of receptors. The density of such receptors varies across the skin surface and is a factor in determining the sensory acuity of each skin area. However, the acuity of many sensory systems is known to deteriorate with advancing age. The aim of this study was to determine if vibrotactile sensibility of several skin surfaces deteriorated equally with advancing age. METHODS: Vibration detection thresholds for two frequencies of vibration (30 Hz and 200 Hz) were determined usin…

Response of the canine internal intercostal muscles to chest wall vibration.

Although high-frequency mechanical vibration of the rib cage reduces dyspnea, its effects on the respiratory muscles are largely unknown. We have previously shown that in anesthetized dogs, vibrating the rib cage during inspiration elicits a marked increase in the inspiratory electromyographic (EMG) activity recorded from the external intercostal muscles but does not affect tidal volume (VT). In the present studies, we have tested the hypothesis that the maintenance of VT results from the concomitant contraction of the internal interosseous (expiratory) intercostals. When the rib cage was vibr…

Response of the canine inspiratory intercostal muscles to chest wall vibration.

High-frequency mechanical vibration of the rib cage reduces dyspnea, but the effect of this procedure on the respiratory muscles is largely unknown. In the present studies, we have initially assessed the electrical and mechanical response to vibration (40 Hz) of the canine parasternal and external intercostal muscles (third interspace) during hyperventilation-induced apnea. When the vibrator was applied to the segment investigated, prominent external intercostal activity was recorded in the seven animals studied, whereas low-amplitude parasternal intercostal activity was recorded in only four …

Mechanical vibration in neonatal transport: a randomized study of different mattresses.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that a gel mattress is most effective in attenuating mechanical vibration in neonatal transport, we performed a randomized block study of four mattress combinations (none, foam, gel, gel on foam) using mannequins and an ambulance traveling on fixed routes (city, highway). STUDY DESIGN: Mechanical vibration was assessed by measuring vertical accelerations at two locations: the forehead of a 2000-gm mannequin and the transport incubator base. From time histories of these accelerations, root mean square (RMS) values and power spectral density functions were calc…
