This study developed Xiaoan, an AI voice chatbot for anxious elderly living alone, based on interview-identified needs. In a 3-month trial with 120 participants, Xiaoan significantly improved HAMA anxiety and UCLA loneliness scores, increased social and activity time, and reduced tense moments and negative vocabulary. Effects were stronger among more educated, socially active, or highly anxious participants. Positive indicators correlated positively with each other and negatively with negative ones. Findings suggest Xiaoan may effectively alleviate anxiety and loneliness in this population.

PURPOSE: Manual sign is a common alternative mode of communication taught to children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Gesture use is positively related to later increases in vocabulary and syntactic complexity in typical development, but there is little evidence supporting the use of manual sign for children with CAS. A group of adults with Asperger syndrome and an IQ-matched control group were compared in remember versus know recognition memory. Word frequency was also manipulated. Both groups showed superior recognition for low-frequency compared with high-frequency words, and in both groups this word frequency effect occurred in remembering, not in knowing. Tests of the "phonological deficit" account of developmental dyslexia have produced apparently inconsistent results. We show how a connectionist approach to dyslexic reading development can resolve the paradox. A "dyslexic" model of reading was created by reducing the quality of the phonological representations available to the model during learning.
