Acoustic sequences in non-human animals: a tutorial review and prospectus.

Animal acoustic communication often takes the form of complex sequences, made up of multiple distinct acoustic units. Apart from the well-known example of birdsong, other animals such as insects, amphibians, and mammals (including bats, rodents, primates, and cetaceans) also generate complex acoustic sequences. Occasionally, such as with birdsong, the adaptive role of these sequences seems clear (e.g. mate attraction and territorial defence). More often however, researchers have only begun to characterise - let alone understand - the significance and meaning of acoustic sequences. Hypotheses a

Larynx morphology and sound production in three species of Testudinidae.

Although the ability to vocalize is widespread among tortoises, the mechanisms of sound production in chelonians remain undescribed. In this study, we analyze the morphology and histology of the larynx of three species of Testudinidae (Testudo hermanni, T. graeca, and T. marginata) in order to ascertain the presence of vibrating acoustic structure, and based on our findings we propose a general model for phonation in tortoises. The structure of the larynx of the three tortoises analyzed is simple: three cartilages (the cricoid and two arytenoids) form the skeleton of the larynx, while two pair

Efficiency and durability of hyaluronic acid of different particle sizes as an injectable material for VF augmentation.

CONCLUSION: The results of the present investigation suggest that modification of HA could improve efficiency and durability in augmentation laryngoplasty. OBJECTIVES: Injection laryngoplasty (IL) is one of the most suitable options for treatment of glottic insufficiency, which is caused by vocal fold (VF) paralysis, atrophy, or scarring. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a widely used material for VF injection. This study was intended to evaluate the durability and efficiency of HA of different particle sizes for VF augmentation. METHODS: Three types of HA, Restylane®, monophasic low-viscosity, and u

Aerodynamic and acoustic effects of ventricular gap.

PURPOSE: Supraglottic compression is frequently observed in individuals with dysphonia. It is commonly interpreted as an indication of excessive circumlaryngeal muscular tension and ventricular medialization. The purpose of this study was to describe the aerodynamic and acoustic impact of varying ventricular medialization in a canine model. METHODS: Subglottal air pressure, glottal airflow, electroglottograph, acoustic signals, and high-speed video images were recorded in seven excised canine larynges mounted in vitro for laryngeal vibratory experimentation. The degree of gap between the vent

Adult neuron addition to the zebra finch song motor pathway correlates with the rate and extent of recovery from botox-induced paralysis of the vocal muscles.

In adult songbirds, neurons are continually incorporated into the telencephalic nucleus HVC (used as a proper name), a premotor region necessary for the production of learned vocalizations. Previous studies have demonstrated that neuron addition to HVC is highest when song is most variable: in juveniles during song learning, in seasonally singing adults during peaks in plasticity that precede the production of new song components, or during seasonal reestablishment of a previously learned song. These findings suggest that neuron addition provides motor flexibility for the transition from a var

The Sexual Motivation of Male Rats as a Tool in Animal Models of Human Health Disorders.

Normal or dysfunctional sexual behavior seems to be an important indicator of health or disease. Many health disorders in male patients affect sexual activity by directly causing erectile dysfunction, affecting sexual motivation, or both. Clinical evidence indicates that many diseases strongly disrupt sexual motivation and sexual performance in patients with depression, addiction, diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disturbances with obesity and diet-related factors, kidney and liver failure, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep disturbances including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, developme

Alteration of descending modulation of nociception during the course of monoarthritis in the rat.

Diffuse noxious inhibitory controls (DNIC), which involve supraspinal structures and modulate the transmission of nociceptive signals, were investigated at different stages during the development of adjuvant-induced monoarthritis in the rat. After behavioral evaluation, recordings of trigeminal convergent neurons were performed in anesthetized animals with acute (24-48 hr) or chronic (3-4 weeks) monoarthritis of the ankle. Inhibitions of C-fiber-evoked neuronal responses during and after the application of noxious conditioning stimuli to the ankle were measured to evaluate DNIC. The conditioni

Effect of chronic variable stress on sensitization to amphetamine in high and low sucrose-consuming rats.

BACKGROUND: Individual vulnerability to stress manifests in the interaction of innate properties and environment. There is a growing interest in the individual variability in vulnerability to stress and how it contributes to the development of psychiatric disorders. Intake of palatable substances is often measured in animal models. We have previously demonstrated that the consumption of sucrose solution is a stable trait in rats. AIMS: The present study aimed to compare the sensitivity of rats with high vs low liquid sucrose consumption to chronic variable stress and the stress effect on beha

Spontaneous laryngeal reinnervation following chronic recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To enhance understanding of spontaneous laryngeal muscle reinnervation following severe recurrent laryngeal nerve injury by testing the hypotheses that 1) nerve fibers responsible for thyroarytenoid muscle reinnervation can originate from multiple sources and 2) superior laryngeal nerve is a source of reinnervation. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, controlled, animal model. METHODS: A combination of retrograde neuronal labeling techniques, immunohistochemistry, electromyography, and sequential observations of vocal fold mobility were employed in rat model of chronic recurren

Effect of acid and pepsin on glottic wound healing: a simulated reflux model.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of acid and pepsin on the healing of traumatized vocal folds in a simulated reflux model. Gastroesophageal reflux is related to various laryngeal manifestations. However, there is a lack of established reflux animal models that would ensure longer observation periods. DESIGN: A prospective randomized animal study. INTERVENTIONS: Forty-two rabbits underwent a stripping procedure of the unilateral glottis and catheter insertion under transoral endoscopic guidance. The animals were randomly assigned to a control group (n = 21; isotonic sodium chloride was used

Cohort study examining long-term respiratory health, career duration and racing performance in racehorses that undergo left-sided prosthetic laryngoplasty and ventriculocordectomy surgery for treatment of left-sided laryngeal hemiplegia.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The risk of respiratory conditions, such as inflammatory airway disease (IAD) and exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH), are thought to be higher in racehorses that undergo prosthetic laryngoplasty with ventriculocordectomy (PLVC) surgery to treat left-sided laryngeal hemiplegia (LLH) than in racehorses with normal laryngeal function. However, this has not been investigated formally owing to the difficulty of obtaining reliable follow-up data. OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of respiratory conditions (IAD and EIPH), duration of racing career, numbe

New horizons in dynamic rehabilitation of paralyzed laryngeal functions.

Bilateral vocal cord paralysis can result in inspiratory difficulty, while stroke can impair swallowing and be followed by severe aspiration. Ideally, these mutually exclusive functions must be rehabilitated dynamically. The principle of the artificial reflex arc (ARA) entails appropriate pick-up information, which is then sent to a modulator that in turn synchronously stimulates the impaired effector. In vocal cord paralysis (six dogs), respiratory information has been picked up via tracheal strain gauges and transthoracic impedance electrodes, producing an analog voltage proportional to resp

Characteristics of gunshot sound displays by North Atlantic right whales in the Bay of Fundy.

North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) produce a loud, broadband signal referred to as the gunshot sound. These distinctive sounds may be suitable for passive acoustic monitoring and detection of right whales; however, little is known about the prevalence of these sounds in important right whale habitats, such as the Bay of Fundy. This study investigates the timing and distribution of gunshot sound production on the summer feeding grounds using an array of five marine acoustic recording units deployed in the Bay of Fundy, Canada in mid-summer 2004 and 2005. Gunshot sounds were commo

Nimodipine improves reinnervation and neuromuscular function after injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve in the rat.

OBJECTIVES: Injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is associated with a high degree of neuronal survival, but leads to various levels of vocal fold motion impairment or laryngeal synkinesis, which has been attributed to misdirected reinnervation of the target muscles in the larynx or aberrant, competing reinnervation from adjacent nerve fibers. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the regeneration-promoting agent nimodipine on reinnervation and neuromuscular function following RLN crush injury. METHODS: Sixty adult rats were randomized into nimodipine-treated or u
