Infectious diseases of poverty (IDoP) affect disproportionately resource-limited and marginalized populations, resulting in spatial patterns of vulnerability across various geographical areas. Currently, no spatial indices exist to quantify vulnerability to IDoP at a fine geographical level within countries, such as municipalities or provinces. Although screening for social needs has become common in health care settings, there is often poor linkage to resources after needs are identified. The structural barriers (eg, staffing, time, and space) to helping address social needs could be overcome by a technology-based solution.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to present the design and evaluation of a chatbot, DAPHNE (Dialog-Based Assistant Platform for Healthcare and Needs Ecosystem), which screens for social needs and links patients and families to resources.

Research-based findings with vulnerable populations are strengthened by strong retention rates at the time of postintervention data collection. Women in the criminal justice system face a variety of gender-specific challenges including histories of childhood and adult sexual and physical abuse, substance abuse, untreated mental health problems, and chronic housing insecurity that can hinder follow-up of a research sample.
