Hypertrophic herpes simplex genitalis (HHSG) is an uncommon anogenital manifestation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in immunocompromised patients. To date, 24 cases of HHSG have been reported; 23 of them were affected human immune deficiency virus (HIV) type 1-positive patients. We describe the case of a 44-year-old African HIV-1-positive woman who presented with painful ulcerated nodular lesions of the vulva and perianal area measuring up to 7 cm in diameter. Macroscopically, the lesions were highly suspicious of widely invasive cancer. The histologic workup of the resection specimen

BACKGROUND: Benign pigmented lesions of the genitalia, such as genital lentigines and melanocytic nevi, often show clinical and histopathologic features highly suggestive of malignant melanoma (MM). Superimposed changes of lichen sclerosus (LS) may cause real concern and lead to an erroneous diagnosis of MM.
OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to assess clinicopathologic characteristics of genital lentigines and melanocytic nevi with associated LS.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 5 cases.
RESULTS: Histopathologic sections of the 2 cases of genital lentigines with concurrent

We report on a 78-year-old woman with a 47-year-history of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus of the vulva on which squamous cell carcinoma developed. The lesion started as a small nodule that increased gradually in size and became eroded. The tumour and the inguinal lymph nodes on both sides were excised. Physical examination, chest X-ray and sonography of the abdomen 15 months later showed no local recurrence or distant metastases. Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus of the vulva should be considered a possible precancerous condition.

42 subclinical HPV related vulvar lesions have been studied by Southern Blot Hybridization and histological samplings. 15 women had normal Pap smears. Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia was present in 24 other women, 15 of them had HPV on Southern Blots. Macular or papular areas on the vulva were strongly correlated with HPV infection, since 6 out 9 of them harboured HPV 16, 42 or X. Histologically, flat condyloma was present in 6 cases. However, 33 nonspecific acetowhite reactions of the vulva were free of HPV. It is therefore important to recognize such aspects on colposcopical examination o

Vulval disease in the postmenopausal age group is relatively common. Some vulval conditions such as lichen sclerosus are more prevalent in the postmenopausal years. Often more than one condition is present at the same time. Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. The risk of progression to malignancy associated with some of these diseases dictates long-term surveillance.

A 60-year-old woman came to the Emergency Department complaining of a vaginal formation. The urologist suspected a urethral caruncle: the patient was discharged with vaginal oestrogen cream to relieve symptoms and a follow-up was suggested. After two months the patient returned to the Emergency Department since the mass was increasing in volume and complaining of dysuria and haematuria. Ultrasound, contrast-enhanced computed tomography, and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance revealed a mass arising from the mucosa and involving the vulva and the urethra, suspicious of malignancy. We present

BACKGROUND: Syringoma is a benign sweat gland tumor.
AIM: Vulvar location of syringoma is rare. Although the lesions are asymptomatic, it requires treatment due to the cosmetic concerns.
PATIENTS/METHODS: We present a 42-year-old woman with vulvar syringoma.
RESULTS: The patient treated with 577 nm pro-yellow laser with a great success.
CONCLUSION: A 577 nm pro-yellow laser is a good alternative in the treatment of vulvar syringoma.

Intermittent sun exposure and sunburn are strong predictors of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM). On the other hand, melanomas may arise also in non-sun-exposed areas such as the vulva. However, little is known about a possible relationship between sun exposure and vulvar melanoma. Temporal and latitudinal dependencies of the incidence rates of vulvar melanoma were studied in comparison with those of CMM among Caucasians in Sweden, East Germany, USA and Victoria (Australia). The ratios of vulvar melanoma incidence rates to those of CMM tend to decrease with increasing CMM rates. The incidence

Angioma serpiginosum is a rare benign vascular disorder usually beginning in childhood. It is characterized clinically by multiple minute, bright red to purple, grouped macules and histopathologically by an ectatic dilatation of capillaries. Angiokeratoma of the vulva is an uncommon lesion occurring in older women. It consists of purple papular lesions measuring less than 1 cm in diameter and characterizing histopathologically by hyperkeratosis, papillomatosis, acanthosis, and dilated vasculature in the papillary dermis.
