The effect of intravenous (1.5 to 2.0 mg/kg body weight) and oral (300 to 375 mg/d) diprafenone was studied in 15 patients with the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and symptomatic supraventricular tachycardia. Intravenous application of diprafenone significantly increased atrioventricular nodal conduction time as well as the effective refractory periods of the right ventricle and the accessory pathway in both the antegrade and retrograde directions. Antegrade conduction block in the accessory pathway occurred in two patients after the dose was increased to 2.0 mg/kg body weight. Intravenous dip…

We report on a syndrome of progressive visual loss and leukoencephalopathy affecting several relatives. Affected individuals had evidence of retinal vasculopathy on fluorescein angiogram and periventricular white matter lesions on brain magnetic resonance imaging. The clinical manifestations in this family suggest transmission of an autosomal dominant vasculopathy affecting both retinal and intracranial vessels.

An acute septicemic disease was reported in 1-to-2-week-old white pekin ducklings on eight Long Island duck farms. Gross lesions were primarily hepatomegaly and enlarged necrotic spleens. Fibrinous pericarditis, perihepatitis, and airsacculitis were observed in some birds. Mortality ranged from 0.5 to 5%. Streptococcus faecium was isolated from heart blood, livers, lungs, and spleens of sick or dead ducklings. Serologically, all isolates belonged to Lancefield Serogroup D. The disease was reproduced in 8-day-old susceptible ducklings by parenteral infection. The lesions were indistinguishable …

A patient affected by dextrocardia and WPW syndrome with atrio-ventricular bypass connecting the left sided atrium to the left ventricle (located to the right) is described. Signs of organic heart disease were not present. Electrocardiogram showed, in addition to typical features of ventricular pre-excitation, a QS pattern in leads V4-V6. During exercise testing the pre-excitation disappeared and the electrocardiogram recorded with inverted peripheral cables and right precordial leads, did not show alterations. The analysis of this case and of another previously published suggests that a QS pa

Surgical atrioventricular disconnection is a possible means of treating patients with severe paroxysmal arrhythmias resistant to medical treatment due to the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Between 1971 and April 1982 we operated 50 patients (38 men and 12 women) with the WPW syndrome. Thirty seven patients were operated for arrhythmias (paroxysmal tachycardia) resistant to medical therapy or with a high risk of sudden death. Thirteen patients had associated cardiac disease with less severe arrhythmias (aortic valve disease: 6 cases; mitral and aortic valve disease: 3 cases; mitral valve disea…

A syndrome of pain, stiffness and numbness associated with vascular changes that develops in the hands of those who use vibrating tools has been termed vibration-induced white finger disease. The authors describe such a case that occurred in a 22-year-old man. A change of job and a course of physiotherapy alleviated the symptoms and improved circulation. A review of the literature and the authors' findings suggest that this condition is a result of marked changes in the vascular supply to the hand from repetitive blunt trauma. Arteriographic evidence of deficient palmar arch vasculature is pre…

Two unusual types of narrow-QRS tachycardias were initiated during electrophysiological investigation of a patient with the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. In the first type, the QRS complexes were preceded by atrial activation, the chronological sequence of depolarisation of which was similar to the sinus rhythm, suggesting the mechanism of sino-atrial reentry. The narrow QRS complex during tachycardia was related to the fact that the refractory period of the accessory pathway was longer than the tachycardia cycle. The second type of tachycardia was associated with I/I retrograde atrial activ…

Twenty-five patients with the preexcitation syndrome underwent operation for ablation of an accessory pathway. The patients were young (mean … y. We conclude that the surgical treatment of patients with preexcitation syndrome (Wolff-Parkinson-White) is safe and effective. It should be considered (1) in patients who are markedly symptomatic with refractory supraventricular tachycardia, (2) in those who have the potential for sudden cardiac death, (3) in younger patients with symptomatic tachyca …

Albendazole at dose rates of 11 to 54 mg/kg (mean of 25 +/- 11 SD) of body weight was highly effective (greater than 99%) against Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia odocoilei, O mossi, Trichostrongylus askivali and Nematodirus odocoilei in 22 white tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in southern Texas. It was 38% effective against mature and immature deer liver flukes (Fascioloides magna). Toxicoses associated with treatment were not observed. Large numbers of abomasal nematodes (mean of 2,949 +/- 3.147 SD) were recovered from 16 untreated control deer, indicating these may have had a potential…

A solid sorbent sampling tube packed with Tenax-GC is used with a personal sampling pump to collect samples of white (yellow) phosphorus vapor from air. The phosphorus is leached from the exposed sorbent into xylene and quantitated by gas chromatographic analysis. The capacity of the sorbents is in the range 10 to 20 microgramP4per100 mg of sorbent, which allows for up to 4 hrs of sampling at the OSHA Standard, 0.1 mg/m3. No interferences from red phosphorus, phosphine, water vapor, or other common gases are significant. The effects on the method of variations in temperature, pressure, humidit…

Total white cell, neutrophil, and lymphocyte counts were compared in patients with chronic renal failure treated successively by conservative means (low-protein diet), regular haemodialysis, and renal allotransplantation. The lowest total white cell and neutrophil counts and the highest lymphocyte counts were found in patients on regular haemodialysis. A rapid fall in neutrophil count during the first half-hour of dialysis and a more gradual fall between the first and sixth hours were observed. Adherence of neutrophils and mononuclear cells to the cuprophane (PT 150) dialysis membrane has been…
