The immunologic effects of fractionated irradiation to both hind limbs and the tail of adult (2.5-3 months old) male Balb/c mice were investigated. The successful application of [131I]metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) in diagnosis and therapy of pheochromocytoma has led to its use in other tumors which derive from the neural crest and potentially concentrate this radiopharmaceutical as well. In this study we examined the effects of non-myeloablative total body irradiation (TBI) in combination with immunosuppressive chemotherapy on immune homeostasis in rhesus macaques. Our results show that the administration of cyclosporin A or tacrolimus without radiotherapy did not result in lymphopenia.
