Wireless patches for continuous vital sign monitoring, symptoms and medication at the end-of-life in the palliative care unit: A prospective observational study.

Vital sign monitoring in palliative care could support symptom management and prediction, though its utility at the end-of-life remains critically discussed. This study aims to test a wireless device for continuous vital sign monitoring at the end-of-life. This prospective observational study included adult terminal care patients in the palliative care unit at a tertiary-care hospital (05/2023-03/2024). Continuous monitoring of heart rate (HR in beats/minute, bpm), respiratory rate, and temperature was conducted using VitalPatches (MediBioSense). Patient demographics, medications, and symptoms

Measurement of neural signals from inexpensive, wireless and dry EEG systems.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is challenged by high cost, immobility of equipment and the use of inconvenient conductive gels. We compared EEG recordings obtained from three systems that are inexpensive, wireless, and/or dry (no gel), against recordings made with a traditional, research-grade EEG system, in order to investigate the ability of these 'non-traditional' systems to produce recordings of comparable quality to a research-grade system. The systems compared were: Emotiv EPOC (inexpensive and wireless), B-Alert (wireless), g.Sahara (dry) and g.HIamp (research-grade). We compared the abil

Wireless distributed functional electrical stimulation system.

BACKGROUND: The control of movement in humans is hierarchical and distributed and uses feedback. An assistive system could be best integrated into the therapy of a human with a central nervous system lesion if the system is controlled in a similar manner. Here, we present a novel wireless architecture and routing protocol for a distributed functional electrical stimulation system that enables control of movement. METHODS: The new system comprises a set of miniature battery-powered devices with stimulating and sensing functionality mounted on the body of the subject. The devices communicate wi

An ear-worn sensor for the detection of gait impairment after abdominal surgery.

Surgery to the trunk often results in a change of gait, most pronounced during walking. This change is usually transient, often as a result of wound pain, and returns to normal as the patient recovers. Quantifying and monitoring gait impairment therefore represents a novel means of functional postoperative home recovery follow-up. Until now, this type of assessment could only be made in a gait lab, which is both expensive and labor intensive to administer on a large scale. The objective of this work is to validate the use of an ear-worn activity recognition (e-AR) sensor for quantification of

Minimizing data transfer with sustained performance in wireless brain-machine interfaces.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) may be used to investigate neural mechanisms or to treat the symptoms of neurological disease and are hence powerful tools in research and clinical practice. Wireless BMIs add flexibility to both types of applications by reducing movement restrictions and risks associated with transcutaneous leads. However, since wireless implementations are typically limited in terms of transmission capacity and energy resources, the major challenge faced by their designers is to combine high performance with adaptations to limited resources. Here, we have identified three key

A Hansel & Gretel breadcrumb-style dynamically deployed communication network paradigm using mesh topology for planetary subsurface exploration.

We introduce a dynamically deployed communication network (DDCN) paradigm using mesh topology in support of a distributed robotic multi-agent approach for the autonomous exploration of subsurface environments, i.e., caves, lava tube caves, lakes, and oceans, etc. The DDCN, comprising wireless communication beacons autonomously deployed via a rover or submersible in a Hansel & Gretel-inspired breadcrumb style, allows for the longest and most robust communication link between subterranean robotic agent(s) within, e.g., a lave tube cave or a subsurface ocean, and associated surface-borne robotic

Wireless electrocatalytic closed-loop system for drug-free management of diabesity.

Lifestyle-related type 2 diabetes and associated obesity (diabesity) affect >2.5 billion people worldwide and impose nearly $3 trillion in annual health care costs. We developed an implantable, wirelessly powered electrocatalytic closed-loop health optimization (ECHO) device containing platinum-decorated gold nanoclusters embedded in graphite felt that enabled selective, electrically tunable oxidation of blood glucose to renally cleared gluconate. In type 2 diabetic mice, wireless, low-power activation (0.75 volts, 10 milliamperes) restored glucose homeostasis within 1 hour, shifted metabolism

Use of coaching and technology to improve blood pressure control in Black women with hypertension: Pilot randomized controlled trial study.

Hypertension is the main cause of cardiovascular disease, especially in women. Black women (58%) are affected by higher rates of hypertension than other racial/ethnic groups contributing to increased cardio-metabolic disorders. To decrease blood pressure (BP) in this population, a pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted to examine the effects of Interactive Technology Enhanced Coaching (ITEC) versus Interactive Technology (IT) alone in achieving BP control, adherence to antihypertensive medication, and adherence to lifestyle modifications among Black women diagnosed with and receiving

Design and rationale of the STRIVE trial to improve cardiometabolic health among children and families.

BACKGROUND: Many of the health behaviors known to contribute to cardiometabolic risk and disease (CMRD), including physical activity, diet, sleep, and screen time, begin during childhood. Given the population-wide burden of CMRD, novel ways of assessing risk and providing feedback to support behavior change are needed. PURPOSE: This paper describes the design and rationale for the Study for using Technology to Reach Individual Excellence (STRIVE), a randomized controlled trial testing the use of an integrated, closed-loop feedback system that incorporates longitudinal, patient-generated, mobi

[[Redefining the Initial Endoscopy Evaluation of Esophageal Symptoms: Toward a PrecisionBased Diagnostic Paradigm]].

Esophageal symptoms -including dysphagia, heartburn, regurgitation, and non-cardiogenic chest pain- are among the most common indications for referral to gastroenterology. Despite their high prevalence, establishing a definitive etiological diagnosis remains a significant clinical challenge due to the marked overlap in symptom profiles between gastroesophageal reflux disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal motility disorders, and disorders of gut-brain interaction. Current diagnostic paradigms are generally based on sequential testing strategies that often begin with empirical treatment

Advanced methods of wearable ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging devices: A review.

Ultrasound imaging (USI) and photoacoustic imaging (PAI) are being adapted from console-based examinations to body-conformal formats for continuous and point-of-care monitoring. USI offers real-time anatomical and motion information, whereas PAI adds optical absorption contrast related to hemoglobin, oxygenation, temperature, and molecular composition. The challenge is no longer a single component. Wearable USI and PAI require soft mechanics, stable acoustic coupling, compact light delivery, low-power acquisition, safe operation, reliable data handling, and reconstruction methods that tolerate

A study of the long term changes in the electromagnetic environment using data from continuous monitoring sensors in Greece.

Owing to the advancement of wireless technologies, there is a strong public perception of increasing exposure to Radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF). The aim of this study is to determine the evolution of EMF in the environment, and consequently, human exposure to them, over a period of about two decades, spanning from the end of 2003 until February 2022. The study is based on data collected by two non-ionizing radiation monitoring networks in Greece. The networks consist of fixed EMF sensors that register the RMS electric field value every 6 min, on a 24 h basis. We used the Seas

Spinal cord stimulation in chronic pain: technical advances.

Chronic severe pain results in a detrimental effect on the patient's quality of life. Such patients have to take a large number of medications, including opioids, often without satisfactory effect, sometimes leading to medication abuse and the pain worsening. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is one of the most effective technologies that, unlike other interventional pain treatment methods, achieves long-term results in patients suffering from chronic neuropathic pain. The first described mode of SCS was a conventional tonic stimulation, but now the novel modalities (high-frequency and burst), tec

Extending multidisciplinary management of cleft palate to the developing world.

The needs of patients with a cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) extend beyond surgical repair. A multidisciplinary approach to the care of patients with CL/P is the widely accepted standard in most regions of the developed world. Patients with CL/P in developing countries have needs similar to those of patients in industrialized nations. However, the existing shortages of healthcare resources have precluded provision of the most basic care to those with a CL/P. Innovative applications of technology can facilitate the delivery of speech therapy, evaluation of audiometric data, and limited dental ev
