BACKGROUND: Poor adherence is estimated to cause 125 thousand deaths per year and is linked to 10% of all hospital stays in the U.S. Up to one third of elderly hypertensive patients don't have adherence, which is responsible for high proportion of hospitalizations. Hypertension is also related to poor performance in tests that assess cognitive functions. On the other hand, poor cognitive performance is associated with low adherence to treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between cognitive function, anxiety and psychiatric disorders with adherence to drug treatment in patients with

HYPOTHESIS: The severity of hearing loss (HL) associated with vestibular schwannomas (VSs) is influenced by genes expressed by the VSs.
BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is the most common presenting symptoms in patients with VSs, yet its pathophysiology remains elusive. Previous studies have suggested that VSs cause HL not only by inducing degeneration of the auditory nerve by compression but also by promoting degeneration of the inner ear. This study aimed to determine whether there is a molecular basis for differences in HL associated with VSs.
METHODS: Surgical specimens of VSs were collected fro

In the neurobiology of syntax, a methodological challenge is to vary syntax while holding semantics constant. Changes in syntactic structure usually correlate with changes in meaning. We approached this challenge from a new angle. We deployed word lists-typically, the unstructured control in studies of syntax-as both test and control stimuli. Three-noun lists ("lamps, dolls, guitars") were embedded in sentences ("The eccentric man hoarded lamps, dolls, guitars…") and in longer lists ("forks, pen, toilet, rodeo, lamps, dolls, guitars…"). This allowed us to minimize contributions from lexical se

In our study, we use the post-hypnotic suggestion of easy remembering to improve memory with long-lasting effects. We tested 24 highly suggestible participants in an online study. Participants learned word lists and recalled them later in a recognition memory task. At the beginning of the study, participants were hypnotized and the post-hypnotic suggestion to remember easily was associated with a cue that participants used during the recognition memory task. In a control condition, the same participants used a neutral cue. One week later, participants repeated both conditions with new word lis

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an inherited neurocutaneous disorder associated with a high frequency of cognitive and learning difficulties. Based on discrepancies between IQ and academic achievement, approximately 17% of children with NF1 have been classified as having reading impairments. In this study, the lexical and sublexical reading skills of children with NF1 (n = 30) were examined using the Castles' Word/Non-Word Test (modified version), together with measures of neuropsychological functioning and academic achievement. Twenty children (67%) demonstrated deficits in one or more read

Verbal fluency tasks are ubiquitous in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) screenings. Yet, their assessment is traditionally limited to valid response counts. This subjective approach constrains analysis to univariate methods and overlooks which semantic memory dimensions are affected, introducing human bias while limiting informativeness. We tackled these gaps with a novel automated framework. Ninety-six participants (53 with MCI, 43 cognitively unimpaired individuals) performed phonemic and semantic fluency tasks alongside standard cognitive tests. Word properties (e.g., frequency, granularity,

OBJECTIVE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is associated with positive outcomes for treatment-resistant mood disorders in the short term. However, there is limited research on long-term cognitive or psychological changes beyond 1 year after -ECT. This study evaluated long-term outcomes in cognitive functioning, psychiatric symptoms, and quality of life for individuals who had undergone ECT.
METHODS: Eligible participants (N = 294) who completed a brief pre-ECT neuropsychological assessment within the last 14 years were recruited for a follow-up evaluation; a limited sample agreed to follow-up

OBJECTIVE: Schematic self-knowledge consists of internal representations that shape perceptions of how the self is related to one's surroundings and other people. These representations may include dysfunctional implicit self-evaluations, such as associations of the self with negative attributes like shame, in trauma-spectrum disorders. The current study examines whether a negative relational self-association, that is, linking the self with rejection, characterizes dissociation.
METHOD: One hundred six community participants with diverse early interpersonal experiences and mental health outcom

IMPORTANCE: Cerebral amyloid-β aggregation is an early event in Alzheimer disease (AD). Understanding the association between amyloid aggregation and cognitive manifestation in persons without dementia is important for a better understanding of the course of AD and for the design of prevention trials.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether amyloid-β aggregation is associated with cognitive functioning in persons without dementia.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study included 2908 participants with normal cognition and 4133 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) from 53 stud

Even before dementia becomes apparent, cognitive decline may contribute to deterioration in oral health. This cohort study of middle-aged adults evaluated associations of six-year change in cognitive function with oral health behaviors and conditions in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. Cognitive function was measured at study visits in 1990-1992 and 1996-1998 with three tests: (a) Delayed Word Recall (DWR), (b) Digit Symbol Substitution (DSS), and (c) Word Fluency (WF). Cognitive decline scores were computed as 'studentized' residuals of 1996-1998 scores regressed against

BACKGROUND: Prior to the advent of modern imaging techniques, maneuvers were performed as part of the physical examination to further assess pathological findings or an acute abdomen and to further improve clinicians' diagnostic acumen to identify the site and cause of disease. Maneuvers such as changing the position of the patient, extremity, or displacing through pressure a particular organ or structure from its original position are typically used to exacerbate or elicit pain. Some of these techniques, also referred to as special tests, are ascribed as medical eponym signs.

The hypotheses that in Braille learning coding strategies change with reading level, and coding differs between normal and retarded readers were tested with oddity judgments by blind children. Experiment 1 showed that strategy choices varied with reading level only in association with mental age. By contrast, shape neglect and preference for phonological strategies were shown by retarded readers rather than by matched normal readers. Experiment 2 showed that under instructions to use given coding strategies the retarded were as accurate as normal readers. Accuracy for all forms of coding incre

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether serial position scores in verbal memory differentiate hippocampal-related neuropathologic outcomes, we examined these associations in a sample of older adults without dementia who underwent autopsy.
METHODS: We used data from the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal clinical-pathologic cohort study of community-dwelling adults. A total of 701 participants (mean age 82.7, 71.2% female) completed baseline cognitive evaluations and underwent brain autopsy to identify pathologic Alzheimer disease (AD), TDP-43 inclusions (defining limbic-predominant age-rel

Patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) perform poorly in neuropsychological tests of cognitive function. These deficits might be related to dysfunction in brain networks that support pain and cognition, due to the impact of chronic pain and its related emotional processes on cognitive ability. We therefore tested whether patients with TMD perform poorly in cognitive and emotion tasks and whether they had abnormal task-evoked brain activity. Seventeen female subjects with nontraumatic TMD and 17 age-matched healthy female subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while pe

BACKGROUND: The successful regulation of sensory input to the central nervous system depends on the descending pain modulatory system (DPMS). For the effective regulation of sensory input to the central nervous system and behavioral responses to pain, the DPMS is required. Its connection to fibromyalgia (FM)-related cognitive dysfunction has not yet been investigated. Therefore, this study tested whether measures of verbal fluency, sustained attention, and short-term and working memory could distinguish FM patients from healthy controls (HC). Additionally, it investigated, using a standardized

The literature suggests that semantic relatedness such as semantic association has contrasting effects on working memory (WM): It enhances item memory while it impairs or does not affect order memory. The detrimental or null effect on order memory has been widely accepted and regarded as a benchmark finding. Therefore, it is theoretically important to test the opposite effect, that is, the possibility that semantic relatedness improves order memory. As a form of semantic relatedness, the present study focuses on the directionality of associations. For example, "stork" is associated with "baby"

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection can be associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms like fatigue and cognitive impairment, independent of the liver status. The present study aims to assess changes in the pattern and extent of neuropsychological symptoms after successful treatment with interferon (IFN)-based and IFN-free therapy. HCV-infected patients who underwent neuropsychological assessment in previous studies were invited to a follow-up examination. Patients were grouped according to the treatment status: Sustained virological response (SVR) after IFN treatment (IFN SVR, n = 14) or

Neuroimaging studies implicate multiple cortical regions in reading ability/disability. However, the neural cell types integral to the reading process are unknown. To contribute to this gap in knowledge, we integrated genetic results from genome-wide association studies for word reading (n = 5054) with gene expression datasets from adult/fetal human brain. Linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) suggested that variants associated with word reading were enriched in genes expressed in adult excitatory neurons, specifically layer 5 and 6 FEZF2 expressing neurons and intratelencephalic (IT)

BACKGROUND: Physician review websites have influence on a patient's selection of a provider. Written reviews are subjective and difficult to quantitatively analyze. Sentiment analysis of writing can quantitatively assess surgeon reviews to provide actionable feedback for surgeons to improve practice. The objective of this study is to quantitatively analyze large subset of written reviews of hand surgeons using sentiment analysis and report unbiased trends in words used to describe the reviewed surgeons and biases associated with surgeon demographic factors.

Speech-sound disorder (SSD) is a complex behavioral disorder characterized by speech-sound production errors associated with deficits in articulation, phonological processes, and cognitive linguistic processes. SSD is prevalent in childhood and is comorbid with disorders of language, spelling, and reading disability, or dyslexia. Previous research suggests that developmental problems in domains associated with speech and language acquisition place a child at risk for dyslexia. Recent genetic studies have identified several candidate regions for dyslexia, including one on chromosome 3 segregati
