Contactless Detection of Abnormal Breathing Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Signals and Deep Learning in Multi-Person Scenarios.

Objective: Contactless detection and classification of abnormal respiratory patterns is challenging, especially in multi-person scenarios. While Software-Defined Radio (SDR) systems have shown promise in capturing subtle respiratory movements, the presence of multiple people introduces interference and complexity, making it difficult to distinguish individual breathing patterns, particularly when subjects are close together or have similar respiratory conditions. Results: This paper presents a contactless, non-invasive system for monitoring and classifying abnormal breathing patterns in both s

Inhaled Menthol for Dyspnea Relief During Cycle Exercise in COPD: A Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Menthol inhalation (MI) lowers dyspnea ratings during loaded breathing in COPD and cycle exercise in healthy adults. Proposed mechanisms include stimulation of cold receptors in the upper airways, modulating perception of breathing-related effort and airflow. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does MI also alleviate exertional dyspnea in COPD? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty patients with COPD (60% male; mean age ± SD, 68 ± 6 years; FEV1, 47% ± 17% predicted) completed 2 constant-load cycle exercise tests (73% ± 7% peak power output) to exhaustion with menthol or placebo (strawberry flavoring)

Sleep habits and sleep disturbances in industrial workers in Israel: main findings and some characteristics of workers complaining of excessive daytime sleepiness.

Detailed data about sleep habits, sleep complaints, life style, work, past and present health were obtained from 1,502 industrial workers. In agreement with previous studies, one-third of the workers reported having problems with sleep. A relatively large percentage of workers complained of excessive daytime somnolence (EDS), which was unrelated to sex, age, education, and area of origin. Compared to the total population, workers complaining EDS had signficantly more pre- and postsleep complaints, midsleep disturbing phenomena, and work accidents, and they were less satisfied with their work.

THE ESSENTIAL ROLE OF THE COM IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SLEEP-DISORDERED BREATHING: A LITERATURE REVIEW AND DISCUSSION.

The origins of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy began in the early 1960's by orthodontists who recognized the importance of functional nasal breathing, proper swallowing, and more ideal oral rest postures. Re-patterning these functions through myofunctional therapy assisted with better orthodontic outcomes and improved stability. Experts in orofacial myology have concluded that improper oral rest postures and tongue thrusting may be the result of hypertrophy of the lymphatic tissues in the upper airway. Orthodontists are aware of the deleterious effects these habits have on the developing face

Menthol inhalation relieves dyspnoea through the brain.

BACKGROUND: Menthol inhalation (MI) relieves dyspnoea in healthy individuals and people with respiratory disorders, independent of changes in breathing patterns and respiratory muscle electromyography activity. Thus, the underlying working mechanism of MI is unknown. We tested whether MI reduces dyspnoea by attenuating the neural processing of afferent respiratory sensations, without altering respiratory patterns and the efferent neural drive to breathe. METHODS: Thirty healthy adults completed four 5-min trials of strong inspiratory resistive loaded breathing: two with MI and two with strawb

Experimental methods to determine inhalability and personal sampler performance for aerosols in ultra-low windspeed environments.

Most previous experiments of aerosol inhalability as it relates to particle aerodynamic diameter were conducted in wind tunnels for windspeeds greater than 0.5 m s(-1). While that body of work was used to establish an inhalable aerosol convention, results from studies in calm air chambers (for essentially zero windspeed) are being discussed as the basis of a modified criterion. Meanwhile, however, information is lacking for windspeeds in the intermediate range, which--it so happens--pertain to most actual workplaces. With this in mind, we have developed a new experimental system to assess inha

Effects of alpha-glucosidase inhibitors on mouth to caecum transit time in humans.

The alpha-glucosidase inhibitors acarbose and miglitol have been successfully used to control postprandial hyperglycaemia in diabetics. They probably work by slowing carbohydrate digestion and absorption, but their effect on mouth to caecum transit time has not been studied. The effect acarbose (100 mg), miglitol (100 mg), and placebo on mouth to caecum transit time (380 kcal breakfast with 20 g of lactulose) was investigated in 18 normal volunteers using breath hydrogen analysis. Both miglitol and acarbose significantly increased breath hydrogen excretion (F2,34 = 6.31, p = 0.005) and shorten

Vapor pressure measurements on Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabidiol, and cannabinol to inform cannabis breathalyzer development.

Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, and other drug molecules that have large molar masses, are often described as 'nonvolatile' and are presumed to be carried in exhaled breath aerosols. Large variabilities in THC concentrations in breath have been measured with devices that only collect aerosols; it is possible that neglecting the vapor phase could be responsible. Partitioning of compounds between vapor and aerosol phases is directly dependent on vapor pressure (psat), which itself is strongly dependent on temperature. We describepsatmeasurements for THC

Breath-dependent pressure fluctuations in various constant- and variable-flow neonatal CPAP devices.

OBJECTIVE: In continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, pressure can be generated by two different mechanisms: either via an expiratory valve or by one or more jets. Valved CPAP devices are referred to as constant-flow devices, and jet devices are called variable-flow devices. Constant-flow CPAP devices are said to reduce the imposed work of breathing due to lower breath-dependent pressure fluctuations. The present study investigates the performance of various constant- and variable-flow CPAP devices in relation to breath-dependent pressure fluctuations. DESIGN: Experimental study c…

Sustainability of selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS): the case of breath analysis.

BACKGROUND: The growing focus on sustainability in analytical chemistry calls for systematic evaluation of environmental, practical and economic aspects of all workflows. Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) is a real-time technique for volatile organic compound (VOC) detection, widely applied in breath analysis. SIFT-MS is a highly versatile instrument that supports three different sampling modes: direct, bags and thermal desorption, which can be selected according to the specific application and clinical study design. RESULTS: In this work, we applied established evaluation fr

Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Disease: An Enigmatic Risk Factor.

Synchronization of molecular, metabolic, and cardiovascular circadian oscillations is fundamental to human health. Sleep-disordered breathing, which disrupts such temporal congruence, elicits hemodynamic, autonomic, chemical, and inflammatory disturbances with acute and long-term consequences for heart, brain, and circulatory and metabolic function. Sleep apnea afflicts a substantial proportion of adult men and women but is more prevalent in those with established cardiovascular diseases and especially fluid-retaining states. Despite the experimental, epidemiological, observational, and interv

Respiratory disorders in paediatric age: orthodontic diagnosis and treatment in dysmetabolic obese children and allergic slim children.

AIM: Obesity and allergic susceptibility are worsening problems in the most industrialised countries. With different mechanisms, they both lead to a deterioration of children's life quality because they affect the respiratory system, leading to asthma and respiratory disorders such as mouth breathing and obstructive sleep apnoea. The latter are related to specific types of malocclusions that require an early diagnosis and specific multidisciplinary treatment. The purpose of this work is to show the characteristic signs and symptoms of these disorders in children of the two phenotypes (allergic

Rethinking dyspnea in pulmonary rehabilitation: from respiratory load and interoceptive processing to biofeedback and neurofeedback.

Dyspnea in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often treated as the perceptual consequence of altered airflow, lung volume, gas exchange, or work of breathing. Yet breathlessness is not a unitary symptom or a direct readout of pulmonary dysfunction. It comprises at least three partially dissociable sensations-air hunger, breathing effort, and chest tightness-with distinct physiological triggers and affective salience. Current models suggest that conscious breathlessness emerges from the interaction of respiratory motor drive, corollary discharge, sensory afferent feedback, central …

Development of wearable air-conditioned mask for personal thermal management.

A mask that creates a physical barrier to protect the wearer from breathing in airborne bacteria or viruses, reducing the risk of infection in polluted air and potentially contaminated environments, has become a daily necessity for the public especially as COVID-19 has exploded around the world. However, the use of masks often causes soaring temperatures and thick humid air, leading to thermal and wear discomfort and breathing difficulties for a number of people, and further increasing the elevated risk of heat illnesses including heat stroke and heat exhaustion. When wearers become highly act
